The correct hot spot is at the very top of the volcano, right next to the lava pool. The coords are 49,45.

Highest one, ignore the ones on the lower point. Try not going near the cave at the top of the mountain, a 55 elite camps ontop of it and can easily kill you. Kill about 1-2 Fire elementals at the top of the mountain and you can easily get to the hot spot easily.

The volcano is a dreaded place for a fire mage. The elementals are all immune to fire, you cant kill them with your meager frost bolts. If you want to do this quest, get a friend to help you.

Don't stand right in or next to the lava pool. There's a big rock with lava pouring out of it next to the pool, you have to click thermometer right next to that rock.

I stood all around the stupid pool and couldn't understand why I couldn't get a reading...

When you get to the top of the mountain, there should be a pool of lava. Don't be an idiot and jump into it. I'll say it from the perspective of entering the area with the pool. On the left should be this cave with a fireball elite dude, middle a lava pool with some fireball dudes, and on the right should be this cracked rock with lava in it, go to that cracked lava rock and then use the temperature there

Actually these hot spots is all over the place, have found some down the base of the mountain. One just to the left outside the cave to the south where you turn in the quest "Lost!". Haven't tried if you can take the temperature from these points. Found thm after i turneed in the quest!

For some strange reason, this quest did NOT give me "Loremaster of Kalimdor" achievement credit. However, the follow-up to report to Donova Snowden in Winterspring did give credit.

you dont want to be AT the lava pool, you want to use the smallish pillar like formation on the NE corner of the pool near the drop-off, yet has one large rock outcrop behind it going straight up in the air.

Despite all the info here, and the fact that i have done this quest before - i really struggled to find the hot spot on my second attempt with an alternative character.

I have included a screenshot.

As you exit the cave at the top of the mountain, turn to the right - and use your mouse to mouse over the scenery around the edge of the platform. You are looking for a dark "spike" of rock, it is hard to see as there is a larger rock behind it.

Or - As you exit the cave - follow the lava pool to the right, until you get to the edge of the platform. It is to your right.

Confirmed, all three of these quests: Finding the Source, The New Springs, and Strange Sources count towards Loremaster of Kalimdor.

Went up the path on the northern part of Fire Plume Ridge and followed the winding path over the bridge and towards the top. Found the grey stone near the only pool of lava here that will burn you. Spent about 10 minutes going around this lava because I thought the pool was the hot spot. If you're near the pool, look for the peak that you can't access. The Hot Spot is right in front of it.

Coords are 49.7, 45.7.

On another note, the fire elementals in this area drop Essence of Fire.

If you dont have coordonates, and even so, the place can be easily spoted on top of the volcano to the north. It is a DARK COLOURED ROCK that LOOKS LIKE A TUSK protruding out from the ground

for those that dont want to walk to the top there is also a fire plum ridge hot spot at the base of the mountain and coords 45 49 round abouts and if u dont have coords then just run around the mountian until u see a stream might be a couple so just keep looking but u will see a black rock that sticks up out the middle of the lava stand by it and click $uccess, take care all and happy hunting

Just that you know it, I didnt measure it in the lava, but beside of it, I ran around for 20 minutes and tried every lava spot on the volcano.

IT'S A ROCK -- It's not the pool of lava!

I tried a dozen spots in/around the pool, and I accidentally ran my mouse over the rock and saw the tool tip.

The hot spot is located near the lava pool ontop of the volcano, it's a black rock-cone-shaped thing.

Super easy method for those looking for completing Loremaster! Go to top of mountain in middle of ungoro. 49.48 - kill Blazerunner in cave. exit cave and look at pool of molten lava in front of you. move forward to ledge but not in pool of lava. turn to right and follow ledge. you are looking for a grey patch of rock, like a dinosaur footprint almost, right near where the lava drips off the side of the mountain - 49.45 - stand in middle and take your reading! you can repeat too if you want to get that krakly temperature! :)

edit: and yes i motorcycled off the ledge!

Found the path by walking around the volcano to coords 46.11, 44.66. There is a lava path that comes all the way down almost to flat ground close to the river at the northwest of Fire Plume Ridge. Follow the lava up the mountain to where it deadends into a little pool. Then go up the stepping rocks just a little further from the pool. At the top of the climbable rocks is another lava trail go left and there is a big lava pool. Rock you are looking for to take temperature is on the far side.

one way to get to top is follow the lava flows, they dont seem to hurt you. i got up from west side of mountain that way.

for some reason the texture on this "plumethingy" is totally black as of patch 4.0.1 ... really hard to find actually, unless you know exactly were it is/what it is you're looking for

The rock no longer has the red cracks in it like the screen-shot shown here. It is just a big black rock that somewhat blends in with it's surroundings. I submitted a new screen-shot.

For Cataclysm beta players, and future Cata players, the hot spot is now at the bottom. I found it at 48,43.

After the shattering patch 4.03a the Rock is no longer there, it is below. Go to where it used to be and look down, u'll see the new rock.

Although others have said that the rock is completely black now, I found this to be untrue as of 4.0.3. It is the normal red/black color. I don't know if this is related to graphics settings.

As of patch 4.0.3, the hot spot is now at 48, 43. For those without coords, it's on the GROUND, not on the volcano. It's on the northwest side, next to a smoldering patch of ground.

It's right near the river and it's a large cone-ish/obelisk shaped rock that looks kind of like a piece of burning coal (black with red veins). Hope this helps because I had one heck of a time finding the dang thing.

This quest appears to of been changed as of the cataclysm, the hottest point can be any of the rocks around the outside, its not longer at the top.

I found mine down at the bottom

I just did it on live...
The quest was slightly changed... hot spots are around the base of Fire Plume Ridge and the hottest is at 48,43... northwest side. :)

Writin' it as Wowhead says it cannot be completed.

For 4.0.3a the quest is back. However, near the base of the hill you will find 3 plumes. You need to check the temp of each plume for it to count.

I didn't find any hotspots on top of the volcano. I did find the hottest spot on the bottom directly north of the volcano though. I also noticed that if you click the same spot a couple times that it gives different reads so maybe just random now?

Just Managed to complete the quest for the first time post cataclysm and it was the first time that I have had a problem with the quest. For me the final stone showed at 48:43 on the ground near the river NOT at the top of the volcano (though I did spend 30 mins up there looking for it where it used to be)

If you do not have co-ordinator then looking at the map when you can see the image of fireplume ridge you should be round the back facing the river with the middle of the base of your cursor in line with the r (or there abouts) that is assuming the tip of you cursor is facing North

The hotspots are no longer near the top of the volcano. For the most part, they are along the perimeter. They are black stones with red lava flowing down. You will probably have to hit several before you find the "correct hotspot".

Since Cata, the location of the hottest fire plume has changed.

I submitted a screenshot of the new area - I tried to include the big rock that the old one was in front of in the background, so you get a better idea of where it is. If not, you can stand facing the Flightmaster in 'Mossy Pile' then turn 45 degrees to the right and go from there.

The next fire plume you see is the one.

Hope this helps for all the people having problems with this in Cata!

It seems to have moved again, there are pillars with glowing cracks around the base of the volcano, I found the hot spot at one of these at roughly 48,43.

Obsolete Quest.. it is still obtainable, however when you take temperature reading it no longer completes the quest.. instead you will get a message each time you try to take the temperature -
" Krakle's Thermometer says: 8536 degrees Kraklenheit is the reading... Tired of me yet?'

Quest is still able to be completed. The hot spot looks the same as it always did however it has been moved on the ground on the North side of the volcano. 48, 43.

I just did this quest on 2/8/2011 on my lock and I listened to the one where everyone else was agreeing, but I did not find a hot spot on the top. In fact, I found the hot spot somewhere near the bottom. And then I saw 2 more as I ran to turn in the quest, so before you waste your time, you should check around the bottom of the volcano.

SON OF A #i(#(@(@(! I searched all over the top of the mountain, 2 nights in a row. Since that's where I've always found it before. Flew down to the bottom of the volcano, found a nice tall hot spot, the darn thing is even sparkling! Grrrrrr.

Just did this and the actual coords are 48.4, 43.5 it's a rock protrusion sticking up with a bunch of lava and heated red cracks in it. almost due north and alittle west of the really bright lava pool is a smaller pool, it's next to that.

Hmm, think they changed the location, I found the hotspot at 48, 43. Couldn't find it at the top of the mountain!

Wowhead is incorrect. The quest can still be obtained and completed. They moved the hot spot. It is no longer at 52,42. It is down the mountain NE at 55, 43. It's a vertical cone-shaped rock. You can't miss it. It will light up when you put your cursor over it. But it's a different one every time. You basically have to run around the base of the mountain clicking the rocks until it gives you the "hottest" one.

Not anymore it's not. As someone replied up near the top of the page, it is now located at the bottom of the mountain on the opposite side of the mountain from the questgiver (river side of the mountain; that long river that runs from one side of un'goro to the other and the 'head' points to the way to Silithus). You cannot mouseover the hot spots any longer. You have to use the little icon next to the quest in the Objectives column or open your bags and click on it there.

Not sure how obsolete the quest is but it can still be completed. The new hot spot is now directly north of the old coordinates on a lava rock on ground level, off the volcano.

It seems they have slightly changed the location of the stone. Now you can measure the heat at the bottom of the mountain not at the top.

Found at 48.3, 43.4 - not on the volcano at all, really - in the burned area, NE of volcano, E of Mossy Pile.

I got the quest to work. I almost gave up, though. What I ended up doing was clicking on every hot spot you find, regardless where they are. When I clicked on the fourth one (I think might have been fifth, but pretty sure it was the fourth), which was at ground level, it completed the quest. Hope this helps.

Bizarre! May say obsolete but can still be completed. Hot spots are on the ground around the base of mountain just keep checking each till you hit the hottest.

This is just to confirm this quest is still available and the fire plume hot spots are around the bottom of the volcano (can't miss them) this quest is completable ( just done it myself)

I had a difficult time with this today. What you are looking for looks like one "thermal vents" but larger and has some lava juding off the comments and pictures it varies where it will spawn. Just cruise around until you see it. Look at the screenshots.

A lot of comments are wrong, including Blizz! I completed this quest on 11/8/12, and the hotspots are indeed on the ground, rather annoyingly i discovered one as you head out of Marshals stand to the right (found it heading back in!), theres one also easily visible if you stand at the E of Mossy Pile and look East, follow that line and theres another one the other side of the volcano, so thats 3 I found, AND it seems you can still do it and hand it in

Most of these comments about where it is are now obsolete, it's on the ground not near the top of the volcano or top of the mountain. Head from the top of the lava pool down the lava to guarantee to find it if you're wandering around up there like I was clicking furiously.

Stand between the sitting Tauran and the Goblin at the fire in the Mossy Pile camp, with the Tauran on your right. You are facing a torch. Behind the torch in the far distance is a spire of black rock laced with red lava. That is your target. It is the hottest spot. It is on the flat ground at the base of the vulcano. There are six such rock spires around the vulcano, and they go from 118 to the hottest in counter-clockwise order. All of the comments about the top of the mountain are obsolete.

The hot springs here are a source of mystery to me. Where does the heat come from?

Looking at how close the pools are to Fire Plume Ridge, I really wonder if the volcano might have something to do with it. I created a thermometer to take readings of the temperatures at the volcano, and I'd like to find the hottest part. It gives the measurements in degrees Kraklenheit!

Here, take it, and take readings of the temperatures at the ridge whenever you see a hot spot!
