This quest is easily soloable as lvl 34, regardless of your class. I've done it as rogue, druid, warrior and hunter. As rogue and druid it's of course easier, since you have stealth, but the way you do it is basically the same:

Enter the ruins from the WEST, not on the road. Go to the Growless cave (38,68) and continue around the ruins clock-wise. There are some lvl 32-34 yetis roaming there, no big deal. Avoid or crush. When you are directly west of the ruins you will see a part of the wall with a hole in it. Enter there and very very carefully negotiate the ogres in there. They are 38-39 elites. I walk along the northern-most mountainside inside the compound. Your goal is *not* the main building, but the smaller house with a belltower. There is one ogre that'll probably aggro on you. If he does, run behind the target building and continue along the mountainside until he drops, or simply stand behind the house and let him smash you. Resurrect on that spot, behind the house.
From above, the house looks like a "T" with a short base.

X marks the spot you're looking for. Move the cursor along the wall until you see it shift into the "use"-cursor. That's the bookshelf you're looking for. Simply right-click it to get the book, right through the house wall! Negotiate your way out from the compaund the way you came. If you get aggro, make a run for it and die in a good spot (there is a space in the wall you got through at its northen-most end where you can exit and the ogres won't follow you outside)

You can actually solo this quest without even dieing. I did this at level 34 with no problem and no deaths. To do this go in the building with the book case. When the level 40 elite ogre aggros on you run outside of the building and take a right and go around the side of the building and then run westward along the side of the hill away from the building. Do not attack the ogre so it loses aggro. Once it does, the ogre will not have a clear path back to it's starting location. It will then freeze and become temporarily evasion bugged. As soon as you see it stop, run back to the building and you should have just enough time to grab the book before the ogre is ported back inside the building.

As of patch 2.0, taking the book through the wall is no longer possible.
Still soloed the quest as lvl 32 paladin. Died a total of 0 (zero) times. As I pass the first ogres on my way to the house, I bubbled up and ran in behind the building as I've done before, then I waited for the Forbearance debuff to wear out. Then I ran into the house, aggroed the ogre and let him beat my other shield while I took the book, Hammered him and ran out.

As a hunter you run in and pull the ogre into a freezing trap. Have your pet tank him while you get the book. As the trap drops, arm another one to catch him as you run away. Love the new Hunter v. 2.0!

As a mage you can sheep the L40 elite, loot the bookcase, re-sheep the elite (you may get a few resists). Hearth out or run out to the north. Run up and over the ramp on the wall to the north and jump off. All those chasing you will lose aggro.

As a priest, just run in and fear him. Gives enought time to get the book.

I got the book by luring him out and using entangling roots to win some time to get the book. He did kill me, but details.. meh ^^

Used mostly the same tactic with a lvl 34 Shaman, I rez in the adjoining room, run in, aggro the lvl 40 elite, and place a stoneclaw totem, while he was aggroed to that, i had just enough time to grab the book and make a dash for it...

i soloed the worn leather book as a lvl 36 rouge it was easy once i put some thought to it i just sapped the lvl40 elite grabbed the book and used vanish for good measure

Soloed as a 33 warlock. Went in backway as before, went inside house, sent VW at guard, ran in, grabbed book and HS. Was ready to sacrafice VW incase it would die to fast so I wouldn't have time to HS but made it with 20% HP left on VW.

Very easily soloed as lvl 36 Rouge. Enter from west side, near the yeti's cave. There is a wall to the right hand side, you can jump it, but be careful, as soon as you pass wall, you will find the ogres, all elite. As a rouge, if one of them attacks you can use vanish. Find the house with the tower, exactly opposite the ruins. Enter and you will find a lvl 40 elite. If rouge, you can sap him, get the book from behind him off the shelf, you have plenty of time to stealth again, and get out.

The Shaman way is simple - just draw aggro, draw the beastie into the second small room (where the door to the outside is) and drop a stoneclaw. Then dash back in and collect your book. You'll likely die either escaping or just after you collect the book, but hey, it's on your mantle.

for warrior - equip your shield, max stam gear you have and defensive stance. run in > bloodrage > intimidating shout, make sure you DON'T attack the ogre or put dot on him as damage will break fear. loot the book, run out until you lose all aggro

Tried this today, 2.01 with my pala and I can't take book while bubbled. So, it looks like paladins are only class wich cannot solo this pre-40. :)

I solod this at lvl 34 on my Mage. All I did was run into the Clock Tower Building and let all the npc orges kill me. After I ran back to my body and rez'd and I sheeped the 40 elite ogre in the room and got the book.

I'm sure Hunters could do this also with their frost trap, Warlocks with fear, Druids with Entangle roots.

ok um. im a lvl 32 mage. im going into the building with the lvl 41 elite named targ. except the room is empty...... am i in the wrong room? or can someone tell me exactly where the book is. i cant see it if im dead or alive.....someone help

Solo'd as a level 34 Warlock, using my imp. I fear/dotted every elite ogre. I did have to SS once because of an add however it was sloppy and easily avoidable. Once you can walk into the town hall containing the 40 elite, use your voidwalker to distract the elite and loot. You can hearth before your pet dies.
Hunters can probably do something similar, as well as rogues with excellent stunlocking abilities.

A really easy way for rogues is to sneak in as close to the bookcase as you can, Blind the Ogre, quickly loot the book and hit Vanish.

i did this with my 34 warrior, but i picked the wrong house :( that cost me 2 deaths, and it is a LONG way to run. so you should not just run into every damn house u think is big enough ^^

did this yesterday with my lvl 35 Draenei priest, shielded down to the wall of the building then used lesser invisibility potion(15 secs) to get to the bookcase. Went for the book and the invisibility goes, Phsycic screamed the lvl 40 elite took the book, shielded and ran. As luck would have it there was a blood elf outside being aggro'd by three ogres so to help him out i flipped SWP on one while passing. Didn't die either which was good

37 Druid Solo. Stealth in, Pounce, Faerie fire, Shred, attack a bit, ferocious bitee. get out of bear form, rejuv regrowth, bear form. heal, bear. Keep demoralizing up, use bash before you come out to heal. Have a mana pot or health pot ready just in case you run low on mana. Dont forget frenzied regen.

You might want to grab fp in western plaguelands while you're at it=]

I did this just 5 minutes ago on my level 36 warrior, without dying. It's really easy. Get to that belltower, but take off all your gear (besides things that can't take damage, like rings, capes, shirts, etc) incase you die. If something aggro's onto you, you have the oppertunity to get away from it no matter which ogre it is (unless you're stupid, and didn't follow along the wall as the first poster indicated you should do). Usually running behind a building will get you out of dodge if you're in trouble. Anyway, once inside the building with the book you need, you have to deal with that damn 40 elite, Muckrake. Put your gear back on. The trick is to go into Defensive Stance, press Bloodrage, walk in to the room with the bookcase and Muckrake, get 25 rage, then hit Intimidating Shout. If the fear works, you got JUST enough time to run to the bookcase and get your book, if you did this in the very center of the room. If your fear is resisted just run out of the building and to the right until he goes away. Once you finally loot the book you need, run out the way you came in until Muckrake goes away.

Just did this as a 38 lvl nightelf druid. just used stelt in too the right house, than stelt in. Used pounce on the lvl 40, (all in catform) and then I just hit him with claw, one rake, and later on with Ferocious Bite, and healed myself with healing touch. Had to heal twise. Was easy. Then I just stelt out.

Could not solo as 37 feral druid with decent gear...on best attempt i had him down to about 5% and i just couldnt pull it off...main reason is he's orange so i couldnt crit and barely hit him in bear&cat. I also ran oom stance dancing and healing, bashes were missing and such...so basicly just get a rogue to sap it for u like i did and its gravey.

If you have a high level main character, you can just blaze a path to the bookcase, and then log on your alt to get the book. Made this super easy! If you can stealth, just log-out in the room, log-on your main, kill the guy, and then just log back in on your alt to grab the book.

for mages you can sheep the ogre guarding the book case and it should last long enough for you to get the book and get out.

I soloed this as a lvl 32 rogue. Simply stealth in to the first building straight off the road. Distract then Sap the 40 elite mob. Loot the bookcase. You get the worn leather book. Then you can pick off the 34-36 ogres on the outskirts ot the ruins for the Recovered Tomes

38.4, 46.3 i was standing right on top of it when i found it.. go straight in through the front gate of the ruins and you'll see its building at the end of the road... go inside, kill the lvl 40 ogre and grab the book

Did it today. level 33 paladin.
i ran to the into the house and died there, luckily i ressed and there was a horde killing the 40 in there, so quickly got book and ran. :)

as a 30 warlock, i soloed this only dying three times, making sure to take off my gear ahead of time ((i know, im not as cool as you other guys))

i made sure to die right behind the building and rezzed inside the room NEXT to the one Muckrake was in. Got out my imp and had him attack while i got the book. died and rezzed back outside.

no damage and only took like 15 minutes

Everyone calls this location a "small house", and just for clarity's sake I'd like to point out that it is often the model of the town hall. Hopefully this will avoid confusion for people looking for a little house. ;)

Soloed as a 35 affliction lock, sent in voidy and let him build up aggro, then unloaded all my dots and drained life, sacced VW when he was at about 10% and finished off using DL and refreshing dots, pretty simple

Warlock LvL 29 SOLO. got to the back of the House jumped up on to the ledge were you used to take it thru the wall before update,,, soo i Tryed something different. (for warlocks only.) Use the EYE OF KILLROG. (or what ever server you are on.. ) Take the Eye around the house and enter thru the normal entrace. and the Ogre cant detect the eye go straight to the Bookshelf and once you are close enuf you may Right Click and get the Book thru the Wall :)

I found the worn book in the big building as you walk into the site. The coordinates for the bookcase is 38,46. It was in the third room all the way in the back, guarded by Muckrake, Lvl 40. Easy to take down by yourself though.

Recovering the tomes were found on the ogres throughout the site.

This quest was pretty easy unless you can upon the elites. I went at lvl 41 with a lvl 36 hunter and we were able to finish the quest with minimal damage.

This quest was good to do with Crushridge Bounty which you would receive loot for the quest off the same ogres.

I did this on my lvl 38 hunter but im sure this will work for any lvl hunter.
Just barely poke your head in the door lock on the guy send your pet in go in get the book while your pet and him battle it out (use mend pet if nessicary) and then either kill him or let him kill you and rez.

Got the first books at lvl 38 warrior. Got the last as lvl 42. The start was hard but came bac kas higher lvl got it in no time. The last book is guarded by lvl 40.

Did this as a 31 feral druid without dieing. Stealthed in from the side of the city near the growless cave, aggroed a 37 mage ogre and LOS'ed him into the building and killed him. Then took on the 40 ogre guarding the book, took some heals, and the guy has a nasty interrupt, but came out fine. Hearthed after I got the book.

I did this as a level 32 mage (alt) and here's what I did...

- I ran in with the mobs I aggro'd aswell (only 1 caster came in luckily)
- Frost nova'd the ogre gaurding the book
- Grabbed the book
- Died
- Rez'd and got on my mount and rode off

Should work for other mages at my level or higher, good luck.

easily soloable as a level 35 frost mage, kill everything on your way in, sheep the level 40 ogre in the building, get the book and get out...

Finished this solo as a 34 Hunter with no real trouble, no deaths.

As soon as you enter the Ruins of Alterac through the gates the Ogres start to go from Lv35-36 to about Lv39-40 or somewhere around there, so if you are low level be careful how you walk through here. You do not want to aggro too many. You are looking for the building with a bell tower almost straight ahead from the gates, it resembles the town hall in many cities (like Darkshire and Southshore) with the same layout. There is a 'boss' mob in the back that is level 40 (or was it 41?) that you will have to fight.

I have just dune the quest Preserving Knowledge at lvl 30 wassent easy and used
alot of healing pots and took alot of time .
I am an druid (feral) and had alot of help from the tips ty for that.
Found the buiding and enterd in stealth an beeing careful not to get agro,
used feral charge to get behind him and stun him for 3 sec had enouf time
to take the book out the bookcase ofc i dident make it much longer but ressed in the hallway
and ran away from the ogres making my way to the entance ressed again
en got the tomes from the lvl36 ogres just outside then turned in .
Ofcource it wassent easy and i had to heal myself alot but i made it.

Just finished this as a 32 rogue. Steathed in, sprinted to building with the book when i got aggro, vanished, waited for cooldowns to reset, stealthed into building, lost about 1/4 health getting the book while being beaten on, vanished, went to the next room and hearthed out. Much easier than expected

Level 32 BM hunter: Make your way inside the building wherein lies the book, have your pet take and hold agro, loot the book and hearth out. Done.

FYI, the book was not located in the far western area of the ruins for me; it was inside the first intact building you run into (straight ahead) inside the ruins (the one that looks like a schoolhouse). The book is 'on' a bookshelf.

Well, i did this as lvl 40 prot pala. wasn't hard in any way. You don't have to go any sneaky ways, just go in, go out :P there is a lvl 40 ogre inside, non elite. Just run in the village and kill ogres, then go left and the first building it is. Just follow the road :)

2 whole websites of comments and not 1 useful reply on where the book is. just a bunch of people feeding their epenis telling how they solo'd and coordinates. how about people that don't use coordinates?

i'd love for someone to answer with better directions than 'go to the city then turn left into the building, run behind the ogre and loot the book'

Those beastly ogres now reside within Alterac's ruins, and I shudder to think what they're doing with the precious books still there. You must recover what you can!

Enter the Ruins of Alterac and search for tomes looted by the ogres. Get whatever you can find and bring them to me, but also seek out one book in particular: The Arm of Gri'lek. It contains ancient troll lore that I must learn, and the Ruins of Alterac was the last known location of an intact copy of this book.
