Here is the short story...

Go into the cave and find Emberstrife (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=10321). He is all alone so don't worry about ads. Have the guy who is making the key, use the unforged seal in the water below the island (out of the aggro range of the dragon). Ideally, the same guy who needs to forge the key will also aggro/pull/tank the dragon...with others healing and helping with DPS.

Get the Dragon down to 10% health and then everyone stop attacking...the guy who is trying to forge the key needs to use the mind control orb on the dragon. (Note: if your a hunter/warlock you should dismiss your pet before this fight...cause the dragon becomes a pet once mind controlled.)

Once mind controlled, then use the first spell on the pet bar (orange block with with a black dragon on it), and cast the spell such that you hit the seal on the floor. If you mess up and he breaks MC...just recontrol the dragon with the mind control orb.

The rest of the party should wait for the all clear (key needs to be forged) before finishing the dragon off. In the mean time just keep that guy healed. You can and should mana up while the dragon is under Mind Control.

Once forged, then you loot the seal on the ground.

Hope this helps. I did it with 4 people, two 60 Shamans, a 60Hunter, and a 55 Druid. A shaman and the druid healed, the other Shaman tanked and forged, and the hunter just DPSed.

Final note: If you happen to be killed after you make him cast his forging spell but before you can loot the object, the forged seal object will remain long enough that you can run back from the grave yard and it will still be there.

If multiple people are doing this quest at the same time, they can all place their unforged seals on the ground. Only one person has to mind-control Emberstrife and use the correct spell to forge them. Since the attack must hit all of the seals, it is recommended that you place them all together.

If by some chance you miss one of them, someone else can mind-control him and try again. When I did this quest, it appeared that the attack you need to use in the pet bar (the left-most one) was usable once per mind-control, rather than having a cooldown.

This quest is confirmed by a GM to be bugged as of 2007/02/04 (patch 2.0.6). You can't hand it in to Vaelan, and the GM's can't do anything about it.

I also confirm this bug after we finish the quest and tried to talk to him again we couldn't but i happen to have an extra seal that i traded to him and it worked so he could turn the quest in.

The problem I get is "You have no target". While I select Emberstrife at 2354 health left... I do this fight without my pet (warlock). But I just can't MC Emberstrife. All I get is "You have no target".

Did all this last night. Got all three Gems as a 70 Prot Warrior with some help from guildies. Soloed the dragon for the flame breath. The quest is still bugged as of 4/29/07 but If you pick up another Unadorned Seal of Ascension you can hand it in and get your key.

Just after midnight 05/05/07 (Happy Cinco de Mayo! !) I picked up the final gem stone off the last boss. I had the other 2 and an unadorned seal of ascension in my bank for at least a year.
After we killed last boss & I got my last gem I hearthed back to Shat & picked up the other pieces from my bank.
Went back & solo'd my way to Vaelan. I didn't see any yellow ? above his head but he did talk to me & I was able to hand in my pieces (even the ones that were over a year old) without any issue.

I should note that on the run to the boss I did see a second unadorned seal & when I tried to loot it I got the msg stating I can't carry any more of those (cause I already had one in the bank)

So. . . not sure if it's still bugged or not but I was able to do it OK as of tonight.

Further to the bug workaround, I had an Unadorned Seal of Ascension in my pack, and girlfriend had the forged seal ready to hand in.

Traded her my non-soulbound unadorned seal. Walked up and was mind probed. Sounded like vaelan was starting the whole quest line again for my girlfriend but then BAM, she was able to hand it in and get her UBRS key. traded my unadorned seal back and everyone was happy.

as of now (2.1.1) it is still required to have another unadored seal of ascension in your inventory to complete the quest. if you dont have the seal, NCP won't talk to you.
also, when forging the seal, remember to turn off autoattack while casting the MC on dragon. despite of casting, you continue to attack, and i almost managed to finish the dragon on my shammy while casting the MC

i only actually started playing wow properly in january, so missed out on a lot of older content and stuff, went through lbrs at 70 and soloed all the gems (voone on second drop other 2 on first kill), i buggered up the emberstrife bit so had to redo it by using the above method of getting a new unadorned seal, but i dropped it, so i then had to get another one to hand it in for my key :s

can confirm 1st july 2007 quest is still bugged and can still be worked around as mentioned aboce

When MC'ing Emberstrife, you will actually have *two* abilities that involve the breathing of fire. One of them, the second from the left, has an icon with a flame on it and is called "Breath of Flame", "Flame Breath", or something similar. This is NOT the one you want to use, as it does not convert an Unforged Seal of Ascension into a forged one.

The other fire breathing ability, which is the first from the left, is actually called "Flame of the Black Dragonflight" and is the one you want to use. Its icon is a yellow inscription of some sort that looks nothing like a flame.

The reason I mention this is because when I did the quest, either something in my UI obscured the FotBD icon or I didn't see it in all the clutter, so the only relevant ability I saw was Emberstrife's standard flame breath attack. Needless to say, I was frustrated when I used up three of my Orb of Draconic Energy's charges and the ability didn't forge the seal. After researching more online and disabling all my addons to ensure that the FotBD icon would be visible, I tried again and it worked.

It should also be noted that the Orb of Draconic Energy and the Unforged Seal of Ascension both have 5 charges each. It is unconfirmed as to whether you need to redo the entire quest line--i.e., re-gathering the 3 rare-drop gems--if you use up all 5 charges; on Allakhazam's entry for this quest, a user named KEmperor reported in January 2006 that the quest could be abandoned and picked up again without having to re-collect the gems, but another individual on the same thread reported one year later that it wasn't possible, and that they had to repeatedly ask a GM to restore their gems before the request was granted.

I had originally assumed that this quest was frustrating simply because collecting the rare-drop gems was difficult. I was not aware that there was actually a very confusing and unforgiving quest that followed it; to top it off, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the quest has been bugged for at least 5 months such that even after you have the Forged Seal of Ascension, you need to re-obtain an Unadorned Seal of Ascension to complete the quest. As such, this is easily the most poorly-designed quest chain I have ever undertaken, and I am very disappointed with Blizzard.

I got the UBRS key last night on my 70 bloodelf paladin.

You must have an Unadorned Seal of Ascension in your inventory in order to be able to acquire or turn in quests with him, even the final turn-in.

This means you will need 2 total Unadorned Seals.

Keep that in mind when doing this quest.

For anyone getting the "Target not Selected" message when Mind Controlling, you have to wait for a chat message that says "Emberstrife's will falters." Then you won't get the error.

Tried to solo it as a lvl 70 Arms warrior, he killed me while I was casting the orb (15% left). Luckily a friendly lvl 31 priest came by for healing me the 2nd time

enough about it being bugged where u need a second seal to turn it in, we all know that.

Tonight when taking over the dragon with mind control the pet bar would not appear at all, tried many times. I logged off, disabled ALL my addons, logged back in, tried it again and this time the pet controls appeared, but i was not able to use the breath on the seal due to the icon not available, it was on a cooldown.

Anyone else have problems with the dragon? Yes pet bar does not appear but if u disable all ur addons, u will see the pet bar. Problem is either orb on the ground disappears or can't use the dragon's breath on it.

Confirmed YOU DO NOT NEED ALL UR GEMS AGAIN IF U ABANDON QUEST. I have abandoned it 3 times now cause i am having problems using dragon's breath.

ANSWERS TO MOST BUG PROBLEMS SUMMARY ( I encountered most of them :P )

MOST COMMON BUG: Unable to hand it in.... If you find you've completed the quest and cannot hand it in.. you have to find another unadorned seal of ascension. Link is here: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=12219

Some problems result from pet bar issues. These are easy and don't require for you to disable addons if you know what you're doing. If you're using ctmod or equivalent addon, then pet bar may be hidden. I recommend trying a quest that requires you to use it. If it works, great! If not it's most likely to be an addon conflict so disable your addons and it will work.

Another problem where ppl may not be able to mind-control it, usually because Health is not low enough- you'll get an emote when it is (at or below 10%).

Not being able to loot the seal is easy, I made that mistake, I was in a raid group. It's a party quest!

Try not to die before you mind-control or kill Emberstrife. This may cause some issues. Lvl 70 may require a healer. I did this with one healer as 70 rogue (with epic gear).

Then the Vaelan will speak to you allowing you to hand it in.

Well guys the mind control thingy needs the dragon to be below 10%,tried it today as a 70lvl hunter - if he has more than that it wont work,try to stop about at 8%.You can trap him in order to be more sure that u place the seal of ascension down,then MC him and u are cool:)

For low DPS classes solo'ing Emberstrife, such as me, a level 70 Holy Pally. It took me about 8~9 minutes. The Unforged Seal disappeared it took so long to get him to 10%. Just use a stun (HoJ) and you have enough time to set the Unforged Seal and use the Mind Control orb.

Comfined as of Sept. 16, 2007. Quest is still bugged, and workaround still works. As to the pet bar issues, for anyone that doesn't know all you need to do is press cntrl-5. It's the binding for the flame breath spell. No need to disable addons or anything like that. :]

As of patch 2.2 the quest is still 'bugged' you are still required to pick up another Seal after completing the event to forge it.

The gems are now 100% drop rate.

If you're doing this in a group, just one member of the group has to have an unadorned seal and talk to him for the entire group to be able to turn it in.

u complete the quest and u cannot turn in, kill mobs till u pick up another Unadorned Seal of Ascension return to the guy he will do his act of approving the seal and he will say he is giving u the quest to get the gemstones however instead the quest pops up to turn in the seal for your key!! i just did this to finish my quest it works

Still need two seals as of the live 2.3.2. I soloed the entire quest line as a 70 mage, was tricky killing some of the bosses, but with a little clearing and some good kiting it can be done. Emberstrife was the easiest of the whole part.

Special note about this quest

If you are doing it with multiple people, then only 1 PERSON has to have a 2nd unadorned seal to get him to talk. Once they do that, then everyone can turn it in!!

I just did this iwth a 65 druid and my 70 priest, we both got our gems, killed emberstrife and came back to turn in.

We killed mobs until the druid got another seal, he went and talked to Vaelan, then suddenly Vaelan showed up on my minimap with a ? icon. I went and turned into him as well!

Everyone keeps saying that it is a pet bar. This is false!

He does not become a pet at all. You mind controll him so you become him. Like a priest can MC. That's what happens. I screwed up this quest by repeatedly trying to MC him to get the icon everyone is talking about in the . The place where you would normaly find a pet bar only appears with 2 icons. One, of a skull (kind of) with yellow eyes, and another which will abandon the MC.
The ability to cast and forge the seal appears in your own hotbar, which has now been replaced by Emberstrife's abilities. This is where you will find the ability to forge the complete key.

I have just completed the whole quest. I am level 70 mage. After getting the gems I got the gift box and went to forge the Seal but

I used up all my charges (Orb of Draconic Energy) during the last part where I have to mind control Emberstrife.

You can retake the quest without refarming all the gems. In order to retake the quest here are the steps I performed.

I abandon the quest and used up the remaining Unforged Seal of Ascension
Then I went back to LBRS and farmed for another unadonred seal of ascension
Then I went to Vaelan and talk to him and he gave me another Vaelan's Gift.

I followed the instruction and was able to finish the quest. As it stated on top you always have to have an extra Unforged Seal of Ascension in order to interact with Vaelan.

I went along the corridor that leads to the orb and cleared some trash, when a Seal dropped, so even mobs outside the LBRS can drop you a seal, provided they aren't dwarves but blackrock orcs.

2.3.3 (live) - Quest is still bugged. Girlfriend needed to farm herself a new unadorned seal to get Vaelan to talk to her (quest picked up and completed the same day).

The MC action bar was changed in patch 2.3.0, that's why. The people who posted before that were correct at the time.

When you are possessing a target (Priest Mind Control, Eyes of the Beast, using a Steam Tonk, etc), you now get their action bar as your primary action bar rather than having a mini action bar above your normal action bar.

Still bugged as of 2.3.3 btw, had to obtain a second seal to finish the quest.

I just tried to finish the quest on my bloodelf paladin after forging the seal. Sadly the bug with not being able to hand the quest in still remains existent in patch 2.3.3 (enGB).

I have tried to approach Vaelan multiple times (he resets and sits down after three or four minutes), but each time I just would get to see the same standard gossip. No talk option and no question mark. I will try to grab another unadorned seal now and see what happens *sigh*

If you have the Forged Seal of Ascension in your bag. Kill the mobs in the area and get another unadorned seal of ascension. With both in your bags, you can talk to Valean again and the quest will complete. (Just worked today.)

Just did this entire questline solo as a 70 Ret Pally (Armory Profile). Some of the 4-5 pulls were a pain, but you can just run right around most of the mobs. Just take plenty of water & pots, and don't hesitate to wait for your divine shield cooldown before a 5 pull or boss.

Total time about 3.5 hrs, including travel. I did encounter the same bug most people have mentioned here. On the final turn in Vaelan would not let me talk to him until I went and got another Unadorned Seal. Luckily the group of mobs right under him dropped one for me.

Not sure how much I really needed this key but it was fun to see the old world stuff again!

As of the 2.4 patch (day one!!) you get 5 charges each with the seal and the orb.

You have to get Emberstrife down under 5400 health (but not less than 3600 if it's between 10-15%) to use the orb. I solo'd this with my protection warrior, but screwed up twice - not watching my health the first time and not using FR gear then by...I still cannot figure out how. The seal seemed to have disappeared from when I put it down til I got his health down and could control him. I'll probably hold off for a third try when I can have a healer so I don't worry about my health so much.

Having 5 tries at this now rocks!!!

I just tried this on my lvl 70 rogue, his will falters at 5% for me. I messed up once and he killed me, second time I got his will to falter but I ended up dying fumbling for orb. 3rd try I ended up killing him. This is also with Greater Fire Prot potions, Super Healing Potions and Nightmare Seeds.

Make sure you have the orb and seal hotkeyed so you can throw it down and control quickly.

In 2.4 I completed the quest and went back to Vaelan, but he wouldn't talk to me. I farmed abit for another Unadorned Seal of Ascension, but it just wouldn't drop.
Then I destroyed the Unforged Seal of Ascension and the Mind Control Orb provided with the quest (had 4 charges left in both) and another Unadorned Seal of Ascension dropped next pack.
I could then complete the quest.

Found out another interesting tidbit. The unadorned seal of ascension is not soulbound. If you have a mate with the item cluttering their bags, offer to take it off their hands.

Easy quest al lvl 70. The hardest part is knowing when to use the orb, so from about 15% I just autoattacked and kept op clicking the orb in my bags and then all of a sudden I started casting at around 10% and could mind control Emberstrife.

One thing ppl havent said here. I was in the cave today and a mage was doing the quest. He did it right and enslaved the dragon, used the spell, then released the dragon and looted the item. I was standing next to him watching and waiting for my turn. Then mage died and dragon went back up.

Then i tried to do the quest but i couldnt use the spell.

Conclution. I had to kill the dragon then wait for him to respawn then enslave him. He only has "one charge" of the spell. So if you cant use the spell try kill him once first. Or if you die before looting then you need to kill him first then use the items. This is nice to know so you dont waste charges on the quest items.

Still bugged as of 20th May 2008. Paged a GM and got this reply:

I was just about to turn in this quest when i noticed he wouldnt talk to me...
So I started reading here and found out about the "bug".

I wrote a ticket, told them I couldnt turn in the quest without an extra and 5 minutes later a GM told me he sent one to me by ingame-mail.

Just wanted to add to the information flow here.

I soloed this with my lvl70 Rogue who has been around since the begining of WoW, i just never got the key to UBRS and wanted to get it for the old-schoolish feeling of it. As you can see from my armory link i have by no means the best gear available but still managed to kill all the bosses in UBRS + Emberstrife without any problem.

The Ogre: This guys is easy, i just saped the spellcaster and killed the healer first while using Evasion to not get completely hammered by the Ogre, then just killed the fatso and vanished and looted the gem. Dont bother killing everyone, just enough to get the gem and then move on.

The Troll: I remember this guy being a fierce damagedealer back in the day, and he does have a Throw Axe skill that does decent damage if it hits, +1700 or so and knocks you back. Pretty easy though, one pop of Evasion was enough here.

Evil dargon-with-arms: double evasion pop and just nuke it. He will call for help and two adds come running, just ignore it and kill the dargon-man instead. vanish, wait for the adds to go away and loot the gem.

Emberstrife: He is stunnable so just stunlock and when he gets out of it use Evasion, shouldnt really take too much damage. I was a bit sloppy on him though and managed to get pretty low (about 1k hp left, yea thats right i was really sloppy) and all i did was since i fought him where he stands before any pulling takes place was just to MC him with the orb, breathe on the seal and then fly over the edge down into the water with him and then he'd get out of range and break MC and he had a long way back so i just used first aid and i was safe again.

Feelt pretty satisfying for some reason, maybe it was because it was almost rare for a party that was not a guild-party to get to the last dragon, i recall several breakups at the spider part so.. Or it was just the fact that i was very bored that day. Anyway i hope someone finds this helpful. And yes the workaround with getting a new seal works, i didnt read the post that shows you getting it from a GM but if that works do that then.

I did this today on my level 70 dwarf hunter. Perfectly doable - wearing season 1 Gladiator Gear/season 3 weapon and BM spec. Cashing the quest however seemed buggy as many above me mentioned. The NPC, Vaelan, did not respond to me even though I completed the quest.

Reading the comments here I could go back again to get a new seal or ticket a GM. My choice was a ticket. After 5 minutes I got a response. In comparison to flying all the way back to Dustwallow Marsh I think it was the best option in retrospect. Either way, the GM refreshed my seal and told me to walk back a bit and try again. This worked. Vaelen now recognized me and let me complete the quest.

In short: contact a GM if the quest bugs for you and it will be faster than flying back and getting a new seal - unless the GMs on your server tend to respond very slow.

After reading those posts, I was worried about fighting Emberstrife but it was actually quite easy. As a level 66 frost mage, I had no trouble or worries fighting him. Frost Nova, Freeze, Frostbite and Chill controlled the fight without any problem.

The cave he resides in is south Onyxia's lair entrance. There are no other dragons in the cave so there is plenty of room to kite if needed.

I dropped the unforged seal on the floor when he was around 20% and then attempted to use to orb to control him. It kept saying invalid or wrong target at first but that was because he needed to have even less health; 10% or less I believe.

Once controlled, I positioned him facing the unforged seal on the floor and used both flame spells on the pet bar. The seal started to blink meaning that it was now forged. I dropped the mind control, finished him off and looted the forged seal of ascension.

August 16th, 2008. Still bugged. Oddly, I did this with a friend on another server with no issues. But when I did it on my normal server, I had to get another Unadorned Seal of Ascension. I had the Forged Seal of Ascension and the Unadorned Seal of Ascension and then Vael would talk to me and eventually show the yellow question mark to turn in the quest. I did receive my Seal of Ascension ring.

Just finished the Quest at 70 and had no trouble handing it in. If you fail the first time you can abandon and re-aquire the quest.

I just completed the quest today.(Soloed as a roughly T4 geared rogue). A couple tips, the mind control can be resisted, and this may cause some deaths as you can't dodge, block or parry while channeling the spell, and having to do it twice dropped my health by about 2-3000. Another thing, when fighting on the platform/bridge area where I assume he spawns (It's surrounded by water) I suggest that you should move Emberstrife into the water to the right side (when facing the raised ground from the bridge) after forging the seal. To all the people claiming it's bugged. If you remember when you first tried to talk to Vaelan you needed to have an Unadorned Seal in order to get the quest. Well this is no different. If its a new instance, would already be activated if it's the same, then simply loot a new Unadorened Seal and talk to him and you can turn it in.

Confirmed. On the 3.0 PTR this quest hand in works as intended.
Just ended it, after slaying emberstrife and getting the forged seal.
And I did NOT have to loot a new unadorned seal.

You still need to collect second http://www.wowhead.com/?item=12219 to be able to return the quest. GM doesn't give it to you.

I had a problem doing this as a warlock that other people may or may not have also had, but since it was terribly frustrating it's worth mentioning. Since you take control of Emberstrife like a pet, you can't have a minion summoned as a warlock or your pet active as a hunter. I used a voidwalker to tank him and then sacrificed the VW before attempting to control Emberstrife, but it still gave me the message I already controlled a summoned creature. Tried again, this time sac'ing an imp before starting the fight to gain the 15% fire damage buff, and again got the "already control a summoned creature" message, failing to control Emberstrife. Tried a third time without summoning a minion at all and had success. Apparently, even having a buff from a minion sacrifice counts as an active summoned creature for whatever reason, so start without a sac buff or a minion out and you can successfully control him.

No bugs here. When returning from Emberstrife, killing all the respawned Orcs on the way to Vaelan, I noticed he doesn't show as a question mark on my map. Having read everything above, I started killing 2 packs of Orcs to try and get another Unadorned Seal. Nothing dropped, so I thought that I might aswell try to talk to Vaelan before clearing the whole damn instance again :P

And yes, the moment I stepped onto his platform, he transformed and welcomed me back with a line of text and a nice yellow question mark above his head.

Quest handed in, key (or ring) as a reward. All's good.

As of patch 3.0.2 this quest works without having to farm up another Unadorned Seal of Ascension. Just walked right up and he immediately changed to his friendly form and the question mark appeared above his head.

If you are in a group and two people are trying to get it and for some reason you run out of your seal/charming mechanisms the second person can do it for you and you can loot it.

New fun bug. Emberstrife's black flame doesn't cooldown. Even if you re-mind control him, it doesn't cooldown. The only way is to kill Emberstrife and wait for it to respawn (about 10 minutes), and then re-mind control.

That's quite a pain in the ass, so you better NOT miss the seal when you cast the black flames.

Here's a tip:

First use other flame breath ability to see if you're properly positioned, if the breath hits the seal, it means you're good to go and you can use the real black flame.

Oh, and make sure you're NOT in a raid when you do this, or you won't be able to loot the forged seal of ascension :P

If you are using an action bar replacement addon and are a pet class I would disable the addon first. I was using Dominoes and when I dismissed my pet and possessed Emberstrife the pet bar did not come back. I had to kill him and start again with the addon disabled.

If you are a hunter this is easy to solo. Pull him, let your pet get aggro, get him down to 10%, drop a freezing trap in front of him, dismiss your pet, and possess him.

I didn't think the freezing trap would work, but he isn't immune to it.

I did not have to get a second seal when I went to turn in the quest. The quest giver changed forms and I was able to turn in without farming a second seal.

This quest is bugged since the patch 3.0.2

When you mind control Emberstrife the spell to cast Flames of the Black Light is greyed out and cannot be cast. No way to get the UBRS key for now.

I'm on Ghostlands EU, spoke to GM Daorch:
"I just had to go test it myself to check the details we have here. There is an issue where you are unable to cast the flames during this quest. Unfortunately because it's a new issue that's just come up recently, they haven't released a fix for it yet."
"So yours is greyed out too?"
"Sure is, couldn't get any greyer. But what I can tell you is according to the info we have here, development are working on it as quickly as they can, because obviously this questline is a very popular one."
"OK, thanks for confirming that"
"No problem, I'll give the devs a poke in a bit and take them some coffee, see if they move any faster ;)"

I just completed the quest after 3.0.3 patch, with a level 70 pally tank, and just wanted clear up a few things.

Right from the start to find Vaelan you need to go into LBRS, thru the entrance and down to the right, follow around to the left and as you start to go down again there is a slope on your left. Follow it up to the top and get onto the ledge. Over in the back lefthand corner is an Orc which when you chat to him turns into Vaelan. So now the quest begins.

I received all four items from the boss with 100% drop rate, but you have to roll for it if in a group. Collected the item and chatted to Vaelan and in my inventory was a gift box that contained the unforged seal and mind control orb. Then I went on my merry way to Duskwallow Marsh.

Now this is the bit I found confusing in the other help chats, What you should do is put a short cut in you bar for the unforged seal and mind control orb, for quick and easy access. You find your way down to Emberstrife with no dramas as there was no adds. What you need to do is then burn down Emberstrife to about just under 15% health, then click the unforged seal so it is situated between you and Emberstrife. At about 10% - 15% you stop attacking and you should be able to click and use the mind control orb. Once Emberstrife is mind control you will be looking from him to you. This is when you click on "Flame of the Black Dragonflight" in the pet bar and Emberstrife breathes fire over then unforged seal. You know if it has been successful when the unforged seal become lootable (has the little wheel icon when mouse over it). All you need to do then is cancel MC and kill Emberstrife, then loot the unforged seal. If you weren't successful then cancel MC reposition yourself re-MC and do again.

Not sure about the bugs but i had 1 x orb and 1 x unforged seal still in pack at time for hand in at Vaelan back at LBRS, and no dramas. Completed straight up.

FINALLY did this quest at 73. You full Resto Druids should be happy to hear that he is indeed soloable.

You WILL get a message in your chat log, telling you when his will is weakened enough. However, it's often hard NOT to crit, so be careful of your DoTs and heavier spells.
Even if you're soloing, the Mind Control still works: just position him at a 90 degree angle from yourself and use his fire abilities. They shoot out as a cone, but I had no troubles. Good Hunting!

It's very easy for L70 hunter but something special:
- you put unforged on the stone place near the mob.
- send your pet to mob and kill him
- when mob is around 10% or almost dead with >5% stop automatic shooting and set pet on passive
- dismiss pet (because the orb refuses because you have already one active creature)
- use orb to control mob, fly a bit to unforged and breath with yellow icon there (there is no problem if mob aggro you a little)
- you see sparkles around seal now. You must not miss it, because breath has 3 min cooldown which is too long for mind control.
- fly mob now more away for breaking the mind control.
- shoot him off (with or without pet), call pet is possible without unhappy icon.
- loot seal and you can go back :)

If mob is killed, you wait 6 min for respawn if your job is not succesfully done.

So if you're an unholy DK trying to get this key for dungeonmaster stuff stop reapplying diseases at like 60%. (You really should only have to apply once but glyph of SS). Also I'd stop auto attacking at 20% or so. At 10% I was clicking like mad on the orb and he died before I finished casting.

I am encountering a problem where each spawn of Emberstrife can only use Flames of the Black Flight one time only. Further mind controls revealed a greyed out ability. After killing him and waiting for a fresh spawn, the ability was once again available for use.

when doing this with others, my advice is leave them on the other side of the world!
1st attempt: emberstrife got killed before i could use the orb
2nd attempt same as the first!
3rd attempt managed to get the others to not kill him, but they didnt heal me, so again FAIL
then there were a whole bunch of attempts which finished off round one of the orbs plus a reload because couldnt use the black flame, was grey.so not overly impressed!
gave up on that one and found someone else already with it.
later this evening, went back with just one other, and a) it worked, and b) it was bliss not having someone balls it up lol

As of 3.0.3 when you control Emberstrife, the Blizzard UI now switches to a vehicle style display. The spells are all the same, though, with the spell you need (which still looks like a yellow seal) right next to the one that actually has fire on the icon...

(Just a note, Vaelan wasn't bugged for me or either of my two guildmates who've done the quest since WotLK)

Confirmed as of dec 2nd, 2009. Not bugged, no need for an extra seal. Although I didn't see the question mark on my map or the mouse icon even changing, just clicking on him brought up the quest dialogue for me.

And aye, Emberstrife was easy. He / she have about 31k hp according to my mobinfo. The worst problem i had was refraining from using DoTs as you had to keep 'it' below 10% health.

As of 1/4/2008, this is fixed.

I just did the whole chain while doing LBRS for achievement. I had not gotten the key yet, so I decided to run through it, even though I was fretting after reading all of these comments.

It works. No more bugs.

As far as pet bars, this is still a problem. As a lock, it would not let me control him, saying "You already have a pet." So I quickly dismissed the pet, controlled him and breathed on him 2 seconds before my DoTs killed him.

Vaelan recognized me as soon as I got back saying, "Ah, gnome, you have returned!"

I did this as a 73 Unholy Death Knight, I was worried that it would be a challenge... not at all.

I didn't have a chance to use the orb at first, because I still had my minion pet and i already "controlled a summoned creature." By the time I figured out what was wrong, I had killed Emberstrife. Oops. In any case, he's easily soloable at this level in greens. Just make sure to dismiss your pet.

I dropped the item before the fight, pulled him down and moved him away from it a little bit. then owned him in the face til 20%, dismissed my pet, fought some more, did mind control.

Be aware that if you are melee you will still attack him while channeling the mind control if you are on autoattack - I even pressed escape to stop attacking and it didn't take.

Upon returning to Vaelan, he simply said to me "Ah, draenei, you have returned!" And then the question mark popped up and I turned the quest in without any problems.

we went for achievement leeeeeeeeeeroy! today but we could find the whelps however we found out that they where in UBRS and we where in LBRS anyways, we found out about a door, i found it later on, but closed some of you say its open, its not anymore seems we searched for hours do we need the key to open the door to the whelps (UBRS) plz awnser! ;(

Emberstrife is NOT immune to Hibernate..

Just soloed it as 60 Drooid.. He does still hit hard tho, and has about 31.5k Hp... Sleep him at 10%, set your unforged thingy in the water, and MC him, fly away, release, switch to Bear / Doomkin, and finish him off... c",)

This quest frustrated the heck of out me.

I kept killing him, 5 times in a row... as Lv80 Ret Pally i was doing 10%+/ white dmg per hit heh so I was having some trouble keeping him alive long enough to MC. I wasn't in a particularly subtle mood so I didn't bother switching to a non-trained weapon...

That's beside the point i wanted to make though.

Confirm that you just need to obtain another unadorned seal (1st mob i killed dropped one), return to Vaelan, abandon and re-accept the quest and he'll give you the seals/orbs again no problems.

Main point for my post is: Be sure to destroy any unused seals/orbs in your bags before accepting! He'll replace 5 of whichever one you ran out of but if you've got 1 or more of the other they won't get replaced.

I tried this quest 50 times or more, and it never worked. His flame breath did absolutely nothing. And to be honest I was getting SO pis*ed off i was thinking of cancelling my sub.

Then I read a comment on here that the icon that needs using is YELLOW, NOT the flame icon which i was always using. Using the flames icon ONLY makes you frustrated that time after time after time you find yourself running back to BRD for another 5 charges and another 5 fails.

Using the yellow icon, the seal was forged immediately I pressed it.

YELLOW, YELLOW, YELLOW. YELLOW.

If that icon is NOT available once you gain control. Kill Emberstrife and wait for it to respawn. You will find the icon is now available when you take control.

recently soloed this quest as a WotLK lv66 retri Paladin. Emberstrife has 31.4k HP. Hes not immune to Hammer of Justice so just use that and throw a couple of instant flash heals. Divine Storm and Seal of Light will do the rest... Remember not to kill him before u mind control him, and not to mind control him before you use the unforged seal. cake really

Eventhough this quest is picked up inside a dungeon, it still counts for the achievement Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms. I am unsure wether the previous quests also counted. I didn't track them.

At lvl 80 Fury warrior I got tired of waiting for him to respawn so I had to take off my armor and weapons and give him a knuckle sandwich he'll never forget just to be able to have time to mind controll him. I suggest keeping this in mind before you take him on the first time if your a DPS machine.

To add to above comment when I used orb there was two blocks above my action bar and I could not enact forging of seal using these two blocks. And after several tries I finally noticed that the pet bar actually takes place of the lower action bar and completed forging without any problems. Was looking for Pet bar above action bars like when pet is active.

I have no problem at all, only one, and that was me forgetting I was in a raid group that was empty, so I was leader of an empty raid group. So I couldnt get the drake to make the ring... Make sure you dont forget that :)

I soloed this guy on my 58 paladin

Short guide:

Attack the boss at its start spot once you get low jump down on the lower spot first aid ( i got heavy frostweave!) kite the drake up the the start spot and start all over agian if youre prot specced remember to put avengers shield on it, will buy you a few more seconds of regenation. I'm afraid i forgot to record it but i got some pictures,

Completed this quest with no bugs. When I first went to hand the quest in, there was no question mark, but it appeared after a few seconds. Don't know if I was lucky or if they've fixed it. (probably the former...)

If he does not have a ? above his head for you to turn in a quest try walking back to the start of the platform near the far wall and then return to him. He said "Ah, blood elf, you have returned!" and then immediately a ? popped up.

I did this as a level 77 Arms warrior & i killed Emberstrife twice will trying to control him, Rend & Deep Wounds will screw you over, If your dual specced as a prot warrior however go sword & board & turn off auto-attack, In this case less DPS is better if your over level 70

11/30/09 - had an issue with the Flame of the Black Dragonflight being on 3 hour cooldown when I MC'd Emberstrife.
Disabled bartender, problem solved. May have been a weird interaction between bartender and this quest.

You also don't have to kill Emberstrife after you forge the seal. After successfully forging my seal, I released control of Emberstrife and he de-aggro'd back to his spawn spot. He also has no loot, so its nice to not leave a trail of destruction and bloodshed behind in pursuit of questing.

Also, there is no warning or flavor text when Emberstrife drops below 10% health so I recommend you put the Orb on your action bar and keep trying when he gets low on health.

Emberstrife is Fear-able, so he is relatively easy to solo as a level 58 affliction Warlock.

I was able to do this as a lvl 59 lock. Make sure you are best friends with your Fear, because it saves you a lot in this fight. :P Also make sure you have a health pot on you, a freshly made healthstone, and your Death Coil is off cooldown. Use the voidwalker to tank, and stand on the platform in the back while minion tanks him where he sits.
I kept up Curse of Weakness at all times and Corruption. When I could sacrifice the casting time and the threat I threw an Immolate up as well. I did nothing else, because it would risk going over threat. Most of my time anyways was spent using Health Funnel to keep my minion healed. When Emberstrife is in Frenzy mode he takes off a lot of health from the minion, so make sure you're paying attention. At times when it looked like it was too low I would put the minion on passive to bring him back to me and fear Emberstrife. During the fear I would heal up minion and then send him back in. I had to do this a couple times.
To get health back I'd use Death Coil so the cooldown could start and I'd have it again later, followed by the healthstone so that cooldown could start as well. I used the pot if I needed it and if the other 2 were still on cooldown. You can only use one pot per fight, so remember that. When you have the time, make a new healthstone to have on the ready.
At 10% I used Sacrifice to get a nice bubble, and then dismissed the voidwalker. Move quickly because the bubble doesn't last long. Put the Unforged Seal down and then use the Orb to control him. I think the buttons were 4 and 5 to get what you needed. After I saw a sparkle thing in front of me, indicating I could loot it, I moved the dragon off the platform and into the water. This makes it so he has to come all the way around the ramp to get back to you and gave me some time to make another healthstone and resummon my minion. When Emberstrife was close I feared him again, put minion on him and put back up CoE, Corruption, and Immolate. At that point he was close to dead and I only had to fear him once more before he died.

A few lessons from my fail. Hunters, dismiss your pet first, or you can't take control of the dragon.

Second, after you take control of him, ignore the little pet bar buttons. The button you need is on the main action bar. But don't use the button that looks like a flame. That would make too much sense! It's the button that is almost solid orange.

Third, if you fail (e.g. because you used the stupid button with the flame on it five times until the orbs were used up), you can drop the quest, go back to the quest giver in LBRS, and he will give you another chest with 5 more charges of both items.

Helpful hint for those who are working on this quest, I found that Vaelen wouldn't talk to me even with an Unforged Seal of Ascension when I landed right by him, but if you go down the hill on the platform's edge, he will mind probe you and speak to you. I haven't tested this without an unforged seal, but I'll check that and post back. I hope this makes it easier for all those you want to do this quest in the future.

take care when doing this quest at level 80. Its hard to keep him alive at 10% unequip weapons and its much quicker as respawn rate is about 15mins

Was able to forge the Seal as a lvl 58 Prot Warrior.

Took heavy advantage of the cave's layout. I only fight him when I had Shield Block up. During those 10 secs I try to do as much DPS as possible. I also had to make sure I was standing close to the right edge of the platform to maximize the time he had to travel to get to me.

At the end of those 10 secs, I switched to Battle and Hamstrung him. Jumped down, bandaged and waited for him to get into charging distance. Once he did, charged and hamstrung again. Got up to the platform again, waited for him to get into charging distance once again, and apply another Hamstring. By now, Shield Block was up and there was only a few seconds left on Recently Bandaged. Went back to initial position, fought him with Shield Block up, then jump down. Rince and repeat.

The whole process took a bit more than 8 mins, had to use 8 Heavy Runecloth Bandages and 1 Major Healing Potion. (I am also a JC and I normally have a healthy stock of Dense Stone Statues in the bag but I used them during the first 6 unsuccesful tries.)

The key to minimizing his damage is to Bash his flame breathes, but it wasn't the easiest thing in the world - I took a few in the face because it either missed, I missed timed it or I had no rage to do so.

Once his will faltered, placed the Seal on the floor, Intimidate him and then MC him.

Died for the 7th time after MC wore off, but managed to get the finished Seal before dying :)

It seems that the bug has been fixed, since I could complete this quest just fine.

Also worth noting that even after I received my Seal of Ascension, I still had an Unforged Seal of Ascension as well as an Orb of Draconic Energy with 4 charges left in my bags.

Confirmed soloable as a lvl58 frost mage.

* Summon water elemental below his spawn, have water elemental start attacking.

* While WE has aggro, run up to where he spawns and start frost bolting him, using frozen nova whenever he is in range to slow him down.

* Make sure he kills your WE (or else you'll need to dismiss it), and then he'll start heading back up to you.

* Make sure the seal has been used and is ready to be forged.

* If he's not low enough to be mind controlled when he gets close to you at his spawn, just hop back down and ice him some more. He should be under 10% by the time he gets close; if not, you can fire shield/ice barrier/frost nova/blink past him, run back up to his spawn, and repeat as needed.

* Mind control him.

* Forge the seal.

* Loot the seal.

* Kill him or run like hell. Either works.

Few of the black dragonkin, outside of those in the upper citadel, have the ability to forge the seal with their own flaming breath. Wyrmthalak is one such dragonkin, but his will is unbreakable.

You must travel to the Wyrmbog in Dustwallow Marsh. It is there that you will find an ancient drake known as Emberstrife. You must break his will, <name>. Break it and use this orb on his weakened form. You will have scant seconds to control his mind and fan the flames that will forge the seal.
