Pretty easy quest, pickpocket the spikey hair undead for the key, stealth to the top of the tower and sap the elite, take the journal from the chest, and then run out or vanish (if you've learnt it already).

If you have your distract ability already you can use that instead of sap'ing the elite. Worked fine for me. Did the whole quest and didn't use my weapons once.

Pickpocket the Malformed Lev24 Defias guard for the key. He patrols around the tower and is often alone, just wait for opportunity.

Enter tower in stealth mode.
Up one level is a guard stationed in center of pathway. Try to sneak passed her by walking up on the railing to the right (wait for patroling guard to be away).

Even if you alert her, keep going to the right to next landing up. She will follow but you can easily kill her without alerting patrol guard. Stealth your way passed dual patrol on 3rd floor and make your way to top floor.

Circle around to the right, chest is on floor near desk. Sap the boss, the open chest - take book - make a hasty getaway. Or wait for the boss to walk away from the table, or as mentioned above use distract. Open the box and then restealth. You can jump to first floor and run out - hopefully no guards patrolling out front, or stealth out again.

Would just like to add that you NEED to have to trained your lockpicking to 70, or you won't be able to open it. The key you get from pickpocketing won't do the trick.

This will probably save the confusion for rogues like myself that leveled in draenei areas to 20 and hadn't leveled up their lockpicking in Redridge yet.

To do this quest at level 20, it takes timing. First if you try to pickpocket the Malformed Defias Drone, he will either see you and beat you down, or not give you time to pickpocket. After a while of patrolling he despawns. Quickly stealth into the tower and wait for him to respawn at the entrance of the tower. Before he has time to react, pickpocket the key. Stealth up to the boss without getting seen (yes its possible), and get behind the boss. Sap the boss and open the chest. After this I just jumped to the lowest level and sprinted out. Good luck.

With the new patch Sap doesn't break stealth so just Sap then pickpocket the drone. Once you are inside stealth then just Sap the first guard on the ramp... wait for the patrolling guard next to her to patrol up the other ramp, then head up the opp. ramp and when you reach the next landing watch out for the two patrolling guards. Once past them just headed up to the top, go behind the elite and sap, then open the lock box to get the journal. Dont forget the poison that you get from the box lowers your stealth so you can move around as easy without being seen. Also if you have having trouble then if you read the journal then it clearly says that they bleed easly. So just Backstab, Sinister Strike, then Gouge and Rupture. Bleed them out. Dont be like me and aggro everyone on the way down. I died and had to go back up for the journal with the poison on me... it sucked. So i just took my Warlock and killed everyone.

I just want to verify that it is fairly easy to pickpocket the key, stealth all the way up to the top of the tower, sap the elite, and open the chest. However, Touch of Zanzil seems to prevent stealth completely instead of just lowering it. I've never played a rogue before this week so I don't know if this effect was different before. I was trying to re-stealth but couldn't, so I jumped all the way down and sprinted out. It occurred to me that I could probably remove the poison with my anti-venom (made through first-aid), which was the case.

OK, after u get the quest circle the tower until u see a spikey haired lvl 24 elite. go behind sap and pick him, easy enuff. now comes the hard part, go into the tower and up the first set of stairs. stop and look for a pat (should be a woman), get past her and go up the next set of stairs. there should be 2 pats that circle that room, wait til they go around and rush up the stairs (but don't unstealth) and sprint if u must but i wouldnt waste it. after u get into klaven's room its kinda smooth sailing from there. at lvl 20 u can basically go into the corner where the box is unstealth and pick it (but u need 70 lockpick).

aftter u pick it u cant stealth bcuz of the poison so when u do this either bring a stealthed druid or run for ur life (thats wat i did). now is when sprint might be handy to u, but it wisely cuz if the malformed guy catches u ur dead ( he hits for 200s-250s) run out and if u die just make sure its outside the tower and then ur good for this quest. find a pally/ druid in sentinal hill to cure u and go hand that quest in and get ur poisons (dont worry about the poison curing quest unless u wanna do it but ur gonna have to talk to him u just dont have to do the quest.

As of 2.3 there are no elites involved anymore. Not even klaven. So just whack them all.

Completing this quest also awards you the ability to craft and train Poisons. You will learn Instant Poison upon turning in the quest, and can train future poisons at the rogue trainers.

You don't need to do any other quests in this chain if you don't want to.

The chest in this tower is awesome for leveling up your lockpicking skill to 170. It can be used whether you've finished the quest or not... just use Lockpick instead of right-clicking. Keep in mind that it takes 3-5 seconds to repop, and it will give you the Touch of Zanzil debuff every time you open it. Happy hunting!

Anti-Venom FTW. You can get rid of the poison with Anti-Venom, a first-aid skill. So either have some handy so you can use it right after you get the debuff, or find a friendly person who has some.

Just a note: The Malformed Defias guard, despite appearing undead, is a humanoid. He can be sapped!!! When he stops by the fire, walk to him from behind spamming sap. After you get him sapped, you have all the time in the world to Pick Pocket him.

It's worth noting that an Ambush is an instant kill on the Defias patrollers and sentries.

Doesn't seem to work on Klaven, but he's a pushover anyway.

Oh, and if you're one of the few dwarven rogues, stoneform will remove the Touch of Zanzil poison.

Klaven Mortwake is no longer an elite occuring with 2.4.0. patch, so it's right easy to solo him (did at level 21)

I'm definitely coming back later to kill the spiked guard. Imagine my surprise when, after my usual ambush+combos, I look up to be almost dead, then actually dead. I almost had him, too. He'll get his. Oh yes.

Tower guards do indeed seem to be one-shot killed by Ambush. That makes the quest all the more fun. I didn't have anti-venom, so just dropped to the door, hit evasion and sprint, and bolted out. The debuff hits subtlety specs especially hard. : /

Easy quest, just use ambush on the guards inside and sap the spiky haired outside and your done. Did this on lvl 20 took about 15 min when i was in front of the tower.

watch it as the moment u take the journal from the chest the poison afflicts you...you cannot stealth!so,u need to pickpocket the zombie for the key first(as u need to stealth in order to pickpocket someone) and then u can get in the tower and open the chest!

it took me forever to find agent kearnen, but i found her in the front part of the tower in stealth next to a tree. then i went to the top floor and sapped the only guared on that floor then opened the chest but i guess the chest was trapped and i got injected by the "touch of zamzil" poison, so just in case this happens to you bring some anti-venom with you.

Ok A Note: Get the key first. I went and did the killing and chest part first and had to wait 7 days for the stupid poison to wear off so I could stealth and pick pocket the guys key.

Just have done this quest as a 23 human rogue. First find the humanoid (don't confuse him with two undeads) behind the tower, sap him and steal the key. Enter the tower, start climbing the spiral ladder. Once you find a guard patrolling one of the levels in the tower catch a moment and walk behind her back. On the next level there will be two guards that are staring at the ladder and they will reveal you if you'll just walk in front of them: use your Distract ability to make them turn away and the way is clear. On the upper level you'll find a 23 level guard which is easy to be killed and a chest you were looking for. As mentioned above, you need to have 70 Lockpicking skill. After opening the chest, receiving the quest items and getting poisoned simply use your Sprint ability, fall down and run.

Or you can just cut out the f*cking guards and get to the chest as I did :P

As a level 20 rogue, I have found a way to avoid being poisoned. Be either level 22 or a night elf, that is, have vanish or the new shadowmeld.

As soon as the cast bar for the chest finishes hit your vanish/shadowmeld button. Voila! No poison. Much like spells cast after vanishing will not hit you.
Not sure if you can simply stealth instead of vanish/shadowmeld.

Anyway, makes the rest of your day a whole lot better :)

make sure you get the key before you enter the tower...my wife got stuck to were she had to be healed because she simply picked the lockbox before getting the key which makes pickpocketing the zombie for the key impossible (no stealth)

For those who are chain opening this box to level lock picking... You must drop the book out of your inventory every time, in order to open teh chest again.

Edit: Bring lock picking glyph with ya, it makes lock picking like a 1.5 second cast :P

Ok, something is not right here....Having difficulty before getting the key as a lvl 25 rogue, I waited until I was lvl 29 after a few more tries. Now when I kill the targets their bodies do not glow for drops, therefore no loot. I abandoned the quest after learning that I had got the journal before I got the key (that malformed defias was a very difficult target to kill!), but still no drops! What the heck is going on?

As of patch 3 rogues no longer need to lean this skill as you can buy the poison made from any of the posion vendors pre made now.

This quest is currently, officially bugged.
Wrote to a GM, because I could not open the chest, even though I have the key in my inventory and got a reply stating that, Blizzards development team is avare of the issue and it will be fixed asap.

This bothers me this is BoP and probably for rogues only. How are we supposed to get 160 cooking recepies. I'm missing 4 recipies out of 5, and 1 of them is this one and the other one is Dirge's stuff. That questlines takes hours to do...

Dont make the same mistake as me, i went first for the chest on the top, got the poison so i couldnt stealth and pick pocket the other mob... had to log main to buy small venom sacks and send them to the rogue to make anti venom.... i found it the fastest way to cure the poison.

My antivenom item crafted with First Aid did NOT work against Zanzil's poison. A druid cured it... then after you'll turn in the quest items to Mathias Shaw, you'll receive two follow up quests called "A Touch of Zanzil" to go to the basement of SI:7 and talk to the gnome NPC Doc Mixilpixil. Then he'll cure your poison.

This, like most quests to get new abilities for your characters, are no longer needed. You could easily skip this quest since Rogues no longer make their poisons and just buy it from a vendor. Along with this is the Paladins Sense Evil and The Druid's Flight Form. What I find funny, though, is how all the other druid abilities (Bear, Cat, and Cure Poison) Still require you to do the quests to obtain.

Even if u are higher level ( i did it at lvl 37) the ant-venom still works.If u don't have the materials just go east to duskwood and kill some pigmy spiders until they drop small venom sac.

I have just tried this quest and have looted the key from the drone outside - but when I get to the chest and open it there is nothing inside!

My lockpicking is high enough to open the chest but I'm getting nothing but the 7 day poison!

How very damn painful, I've snuck up to the top of the tower, killed Klaven, even got a green robe out of him. GOt my level 90 lockpicking, got the key off the mutated gaurd. All is going well, open up the chest, got the debuff. Wait, what? No journal!

Everytime I try opening the chest there's nothing in thei, I just have the debuff reapplied to me. I tried logging out and in. Stil lthe same, and the only other theroy i can think of is that Klaven needs to be alive, but I can't sap him because of the debuff! Nooooooooooo!

Anyone else experience this?

I am a level 26 rogue trying to do this quest and I can't get it done. I read the journal, PP the Malformed Drone, get the key, stealth up the tower, kill Klaven Mortwake and then loot the chest, and there's no loot... So I have to get my bro to get rid of the Touch of Zanzil.

Could anyone please help me?

I just picked this quest up again after abandoning it. It's still yellow for me. But here's the kicker, I dropped it at 20 or so and now I'm 57, and its offering me 8000xp. So I guess, if you never did this and you want some quick xp pick it up.

Am having same problem completing this quest.. just tried on a 27 rogues with lp skill 135/135 maxxed for lvl. I keep getting the debuff but not the journal. I already had the key. Have spent over 2 hrs opeing box and killing Klaven when he respawns. I 1st tried opening it after sapping him and got debuff but no loot in chest. Even went so far as to kill all mobs in the area and still can not get journal. Only thing I can think of is that prequst said something about s1:7 denying I even exist if caught. Maybe I'm not supposed to get seen while doing it. Server was shutting down for maintenace before I could ask GM about it..But is 1st thing on to do list after restart.

tried this quest about 3 days ago, got the key by sapping the guy, pickpocketed him then stealthed all the way up and tried opening the chest; my toon picklocked, got poisoned, tried again same thing, verified i had the key and yes i did.

After maxing my lockpicking on it i opened a ticket, the gm replied the quest is bugged and sent me the journal to my mail.

i play in The Forgotten Coast incase its a server issue.

As of patch 3.3 this quest can not be completed the "normal" way. You will not be able to obtain http://www.wowhead.com/?item=7908.

20 days are gone and still no fix. The whole rogue community is waiting.
A new rogue without the tea is not a real rogue :(

Temporary solution: Open a ticket and the gamemaster will send you the journal.

Same here, I'm trying right now, I've gotten my lockpicking from 104-118 so far and no journal... Are we still supposed to be able to get it? Or did a patch change it?

*Edit* Typed this last night before my cat pulled the plug... I am currently waiting on a GM ticket to get my journal, thanks for the info!

*Edit* again... as I was doing this (as I am right now) to level my lockpicking, I thought of one thing... Good thing the Touch of Zanzil doesn't stack =]

Since when does this quest scale?

I visited it once at 20ish to raise LP and then came back, now at 56, and it's offering a higher experience reward than before. To be exact, it is offering 8,450 experience before any modifiers.

With that said, the quest is still unable to be completed as the book does not appear in the chest.

Edit: I'll check back again at 70 and 80 to report on if it still is scaling then. I don't remember this quest ever doing such a thing in the past, but the last time I did it was at least 4 years ago.

well this quest is surely bugged....ive been trying with my rogue since 24....and im 40 now....and still no drop from the chest....i want that damn recipe and now people are saying the guy in ravenholdt does not sell it? wtf

One of several "scaling" quests which grants more exp as you level up, instead of less.

For example, most quests are red at one point, turn orange, yellow, green and then eventually gray as you outlevel it, and slowly decreasing the amount of exp you earn. This quest starts out yellow, and remains that color no matter what level you are. As such, it grants a gradually increasing amount of exp depending on what level you turn it in which is seemingly based on the amount of exp a "typical" yellow quest at that level would give.

8460 exp @ level 51 with the 20% heirloom exp bonus
8820 exp @ level 52
9120 exp @ level 53

you can send a message to blissard, and report that the chest is bugged. They will send you the journal in YOUR mail box!

Definitely bugged... I have done this in the past and never had the issue getting the key...
Malformed Spikey was able to "detect" my stealth from 10yds and dropped me.

Recommend trying to rush in stealth and sap, pick pocket then bail to the rest of the quest..

Think I may have just been a bit too close.... I ran up behind while under stealth and sapped his undead skull... picked him and left

As of Jan 27th, 2010... the quest is once again working. You're able to loot the journal from the chest in the tower finally...

The quest is still bugged, but I have completed the quest today: skill your lockpicking to 100. Then, pickpocket the undead outside the tower, and take the key. Enter in the tower, go up to the stairs and open the chest.
You can open the chest without the key, but do not do it, because when you have open it, the chest put on you a poison that make you impossible to turn in stealth, and so you can not pickpocket the undead for the key (that is a requisite for complete the quest).

Some other notes about this quest. There is a followup that will remove the poison if you're desperate or like cheap experience, and the cooking recipe from this quest is a cheaper way to get Chef de Cuisine than getting Dirge's Kicking Chimaerok Chops. That's one of the advantages to being a rogue.

I would save the Eau de Mixilpixil for later when you can come back here to skill to 170 lockpicking using this chest.

In order to complete this quest all you have to do is pickpocket the patrolling guard with the spiky shoulder pad for the key and go to the top of the tower and open the chest. However, you don't use the key on the chest. You must have your lock picking skill up high enough to open it. The easiest place to do that is the ship South of Ratchet. Go below deck and there will be instant respawn chests that have no loot, but increase your skill.

you need lock picking lvl 90 and dont complete if you dont know a druid or shaman you get a debuff at youself that you cant stealth for 7 days!

Make sure to lockpick the chest when you don't have the key. Once you get the journal, go and pickpocket the key off of the spiky-hair undead to finish the quest.

This quest still exists, it's just unnecessary. It is, of course, the main way to level your lockpicking from 85-150-ish.

It is ONLY obtained by Master Mathias Shaw in SI:7.

This quest scales with level, so will give you decent exp no matter what level you decide to do it.

You don't need to pickpocket the key from the spikey haired zombie to pickpocket the box, just the quest. So do NOT complete and turn in the quest until you are done with your lockpicking here.

Also, when lockpicking the box, be sure to LOOT and DELETE the book that goes in your inventory. The box will respawn within seconds, but you cannot lockpick it again if you have the book in your inventory. The book I speak of is Klaven Mortwake's Journal, for those who use a loot filter.

Since you get this Quest in SI:7 at level 20 you won't be able to stealth, since you'll learn that at LvL 22.
Quest is simple tho:

Pickpocket the malformed drone who spawns at the entrance stairs. (he's a lvl 23)
stealth your way in to the top of the tower.
Fairly easy 'cause there aren't that manny guards inside.
Once upstairs sap or kill Klaven, Open the Chest and Your Quest is Completed.
Once you've opened the Chest you get a debuf witch prevents you from stealthing for the next 7 days.
use Anti-venom from your First-aid to dispell this.
If you don't have that ability, Ask anny class who can decurse to dispell it.

Nice Cooking reward. handy at all times :))

I've been staking out this tower for weeks, <name>. Recently a major shipment came through from Duskwood, and along with it came those guards.

What are they? Your guess is as good as mine. I can tell you one thing - they aren't human.

Anyhow, the shipment had a chest - which is what I assume those abominations are guarding. The zombie with the spikes holds a key we'll need.

Get that key, get in the tower, and uncover whatever is in that chest. Take your findings back to Mathias.
