Every so often, Thorsen will go on patrol. If you follow him, he will be ambushed by two of Kurzen's lackeys (at around (40, 8) ) - if he survives, you will be able to start this quest off him then.

A good suggestion would be to wait for him to go on his walk a quarter before (:45) and a quarter after (:15) the hour. On 3 different times he started walking at 10:18am, 11:18am, 12:56pm server time. His duration maybe based on if he dies and/or when he returns back to town.

I don't think it has anything to do with a specific server time, but rather how long it's been since he last went out, or since he respawned after dieing.

He left at 5:22 PM server time for me.

The first time i lost him and he died. The time between the first patrol and the second patrol was exactly 30 mins for me.

He got back at 5:15pm and never left until 5:30pm servertime.

I believe Blizzard has altered this quest a bit.
I picked up the quest at the Rebel camp without having to save Thorsen first.
The other theory is that I might have been walking by when someone else was saving him...

Can anyone offer clarification/corroboration?

The entire questchain offers:
10870 xp (or 66s30c compensation at lvl 70)
625 Stormwind rep (687.5 for humans)
Bookmaker's Scepter
and the choice of Junglewalker Sandals or Frost Metal Pauldrons

The funny thing is I was able to get this quest without even helping him-- he soloed the two assassins I just watched and then his quest appeared thanking me for saving him

It's not just the Kurzen agents that attack Private Thorsen but also the tigers that are everywhere near the path.

Bah, he finally started his patrol at around 11:12 pm server time and lag decides to kick in, resulting in me not being able to heal him in time and both of us dieing.

At my time he leaves the camp at 18:48.

Set off at 22:50 Realm time for me last night. Was just about to turn around and fly off. Then he started. Killed a panther first then two Kurzen bodies arrive who are Green to you so no worry about stealing the aggro initially. Fairly easy.

Started patrolling exactly 5 minutes after Private Merle returned to camp, at 10:18 server. (Merle returned at 10:13.)

May be a coincidence.

This quest is a pain, especially when Horde come and kill both you and the NPC you were waiting on to start his patrol, thus the timer starts over once he respawns, ugh!

I tried this at 11:35 server time, so I found him on the road at 40.23. After killing his attackers, he gave me the start of the quest chain.

I found Thorsen at 13:12 handing out the quest, already saved by someone else.

Thank you for saving me, <name>. I know how this looks, but...allow me to explain.

I was charged by Lieutenant Doren to re-enlist with Kurzen's men, so that I might spy on them and bring sorely needed intelligence to the rebels. You saw here what I had thought would be my chance to infiltrate Kurzen's Compound. I was wrong, and again, thanks for saving me.

This was a top secret mission, so you must tell no one. But if you speak with Doren he will explain.
