You first need to finish a quest called Raptor Horns from the same quest giver to get this quest (for the horde at least; I don't know about alliance but WC isn't really an alliance dungeon).

Simply kill Jelly lookings mobs called Devouring Ectoplasm, and loot them for the Essence!

I never heard of it because i never did Raptor Horns. But now i know and i want that 10s because i need money. And very nice quest while doing WC.
WC wont waste your time! unless your above 29

The essence is a guaranteed drop from Devouring and Evolving Ectoplasms. The devouring ones are found outside the instance and aren't elite.

Was a 100% drop for me on the Ectoplasms found outside the instance.

I just went to the Wailing Caverns for "Trouble at the docks" and instead of doing that quest, cause i didn't find Mad Magglish, I did the "dungeon" without going in the instance, just with my void... 6 out of 7 or 8 ectoplasms gave Wailing Essence...

The Wailing Cavern cave entrance is at 46.00,36.50.

A great way to get all 6 at once is at the second phase of waking Naralex (final boss).
Many oozes, all 100% drop for me.

Alliance Quests for Wailing Caverns

Since many people are trying out these low-level dungeons since the new dungeon tool appeared, perhaps for the first time, I thought it might be nice to make a summary of quests for WC for Alliance characters. Note that, for the Alliance, there isn't a quest for killing any of the bosses, although there is a quest triggered by a drop from the final boss.

Also note that since the mobs in the entry area (outside of the actual instance) are not elite, three of the four quests can be completed without actually grouping or entering the instance, as long as you're a high enough level to handle these non-elite mobs. On the other hand, since many people will be zoning directly in to the instance using the new tool, it's important to note that three of the four can be completed in the instance itself.

Deviate Eradication - This is the only quest that actually requires entering the instance. The questgiver is located in the little cave above the entrance to Wailing Caverns. Follow the quest link for instructions on how to get into that cave. There are no pre-requisites to getting this quest.
Deviate Hides - Also obtained from the cave outside WC. This quest can be completed either inside or outside the instance. Again, there is no pre-requisite for this quest.
Smart Drinks - Obtained in Ratchet. There is a pre-requisite quest, Raptor Horns, given by the same questgiver, and which can be completed fairly quickly without leaving The Barrens. This quest (Smart Drinks) also can be completed either inside or outside the instance.
Trouble at the Docks - This quest is obtained in Ratchet. The target NPC is in the entry area for WC and thus outside the instance itself, meaning that while this quest can be completed without entering the instance, it's the only one of these four that cannot be completed if you zone in using the new dungeon tool.

In addition to these, there is one other quest that can be picked up within the instance. The Glowing Shard is picked up by a drop from the final boss of WC, Mutanus the Devourer. This eventually leads to another quest which finishes (for Alliance characters) in Darnassus.

I'm wondering if this quest does a penalty on my Bloodsail Buccaneur reputation.
Edit* nope. just finished and got 500xp with ratchet and 250xp with the other factions without suffering loss of reputation with the Bloodsail Buccaneur

This quest does not seem to decrease your Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation (at 80, Hostile.)

Also gives 250 rep with Booty Bay, Everlook, and Gadgetzan. Does not decrease Bloodsail rep.

Ok, so raptor horns don't work so well. But that's all right -- no one got rich on their first try! And besides, I think I found something that'll work even better in my smart drinks!

There is a substance called Wailing Essence, and I think it is the cause of the strange plants and animals in the Barrens. Get me some and I'll try it in my drink!

I heard the essence gathers in ectoplasmic creatures in the Wailing Caverns to the west. Hunt those creatures and gather the essence.
