Shadowlands Art Blast: Necrolord Crystals and Ardenweald Water Plants by Associate Environment Artist Tai Walker

Tai WalkerArtstationMaldraxxus HivesThis was one of my favorite asset kits I had the honor of working on during Shadowlands development. Originally concepted by Matthew Heyman and Phillip Zhang. Matthew then drafted an initial greybox, which I then tweaked and used as the base for the final models and handpainted textures.

Also a huge thank you to my lead, Tina Wang, and art director Ely Cannon.Maldraxxus Pestilence AssetsThis was a super unique area to work on. Much of the preliminary work on the mushroom assets was done by Servando Lupini and Phillip Zhang. Servando built the initial model for the giant mushrooms, and got the majority of the texture done prior to my finishing it up. Phill concepted and greyboxed the smaller low lying mushrooms. So huge shout out to both of them, it was an honor learning from them and bringing their initial assets to a completed state.

I was also responsible for the creation and animation of the slime waterfall kit for both the zone and the Plaguefall Dungeon.

Also a huge thank you to my lead, Tina Wang, and art director Ely Cannon.Maldraxxus Necrolord CrystalsThese were some of the most fun assets I got to work on for Maldraxxus, originally drafted by my friend Jordan Powers, these were passed to me for texture and material polish, in order to help integrate them into the environment kit. After which Jordan created some awesome animations and additional "destroyed" model variants. Additional VFX support came from the amazing Kali Jacobs.

Majority of tileset development was done in Substance Designer with a polish pass in Photoshop.

Also a huge thank you to my lead, Tina Wang, and art director Ely Cannon.Ardenweald Water PlantsThese are some of the first assets I got to make upon joining the team. The purple leafy bulbs were one of my assignments during my internship, and the mushrooms and bushes I completed upon joining fulltime. I was also responsible for the smaller ground clutter for the underwater tileset in these areas.

The mushrooms were originally greyboxed by Gabe Gonzalez who gave me tons of support and artistic direction throughout my time on Ardenweald.
A majority of the grotto plant kit was made by Kate Mckee who I worked closely with to support her tilesets and existing assets.

Those pods give it a surreal alien landscape = Fantastic Voyage feel. The crystals are so simple, but so beautifully done too. I want to touch them, is that weird?
