From the classic demo, we learned that the riding system is the older race riding one, instead of the profession-esque system we have today in modern wow introduced in Patch 1.12.1. What was the train of thought behind this decision?

The modern riding system was introduced in one of the later 1.12 patches, and as we were discussing it, we felt this system was added to prepare the game for Burning Crusade, which had the ability to ride flying mounts.

For most of the history of WoW Classic, throughout 2004 and 2005, we had the older mount system. It just felt more authentic to that game, to use the older one instead of one that just laid the groundwork for another expansion.

We know a lot going into the six-phase plan now, and the decision on progressive itemization cleared a lot of remaining topics up. Is there any content that’s a grey area you’d like to clarify? For example, can you get old-school mounts up until a certain phase? Or will Classic WoW only have the current vendor exalted mounts.

It is the current vendor mounts for 1.12. We aren't putting back the unarmored mounts. We just talked about this recently internally. We know some people are interested in them, but we don't want to put them in for a limited period of time, because we didn't want to influence people through their first leveling experience. Especially people coming back for the first time. We don't want people to feel like they have to rush. If you want to level slowly and enjoy the journey, you should. We’ve been receiving great detailed blue posts clarifying what will and won't change in the last few months. What were some difficult decisions you had to make in preserving or changing vanilla WoW?

They weren't really that difficult. If it affects gameplay, we want to make it like it was in Vanilla. If it doesn't affect gameplay, then it's not as important.

The other guiding principle is aesthetics, the look of the art, and making sure it reflects how everything looked back then and that it looks good together.

We really want to serve people's memories of Classic, which we agreed on pretty early. If it affects anything about how you can play the game, it was there. However certain convenience things like auto-complete for mail doesn't affect your gameplay experience.

I remember as a Mage, I blinked through the world plenty of times..but that doesn't affect gameplay. However, two mages could polymorph each other, which isn't present in modern WoW but was present in Classic WoW, so we want to restore that.

What goes into researching details like Summoning Demon Behavior and trying to replicate old bugs as part of WoW Classic development?

We have a stand-alone reference build of the game, with old code and old data, so we can look at that and run it. As we're running through the game, or get reports that something is broken, we can stand them up side-by-side and try to observe the behavior in both clients for differences.

We rely on feedback from the community. We have avid fans, not just players from the community but Blizzard itself. With the beta, we expect people to call us out on things we missed. We try to be extremely thorough in researching things to get it right, and when we do miss something, we'll find it and deal with it there.

I can tell you already, that with our internal alpha testing, the amount of time people are putting into this and what they're finding is pretty spectacular. Getting that feedback is a good way for us to verify that we're hitting the mark on what that experience was like in Classic.

Anything that stands out from feedback as a detail you can't believe was missed?

We're shocked every day at how good Brian's team is at hitting that mark. Other than minor bugs here and there, like the grass-cutting thing, we've mostly heard excitement and nostalgia and hunger to have this live.

I want to add to that it's very helpful for people to point out what we've missed. We can usually figure it out once we've put our eyes on it, but there are things we miss because the game is so big. There's so much to do, there's so many different spell abilities, so many zones to explore, that sometimes there are little things we miss.

For example, every time you hit a mining node, it guaranteed gave you a skill up, and we were like 'oh, that's not right!'

What topics are you most looking for feedback for during the beta?

Anything we feel like we missed. It's a really big game and while we can usually figure the authentic behavior out, it's a big game to make sure everything os covered.

Everyone knows what Classic is, and the payoff will be in the details. What do you remember? What is the story that only you had in Classic, and how do we recreate that? And was there something special about the data or the code that we missed for some reason?

As we go through the feedback process, we want to make sure we're hitting those marks and delivering the most perfect Classic experience that we can.Collector’s EditionAre there any plans for a Classic Collector’s Edition? Or is the anniversary box the only collectible box planned for 2019?

The Anniversary box is meant to celebrate World of Warcraft as a whole. It's not specific to Classic, it's not specific to Battle for Azeroth. It's just about celebrating World of Warcraft.

For Classic WoW, one interesting thing is that if you have the original Collector's Edition on the account you are still playing on, we have restored the ability for you to get the pet. But they will be just as exclusive as they were back in the day. No plans for the vanilla collector's edition to go back on sale.

It’s a great example of a conversation on the forums I was able to take and show to the Classic team to show them what you guys were asking for. After some back and forth on the posts we had decided that original CE was a part of some players experience of Classic.

The content pacing schedule isn’t revealed yet, and people are keen to know when it’s coming, especially after it got revamped from four patches up to six. Will know the exact schedule for all six phases before launch, or revealed one by one over the course of Classic?

Probably one-by-one, as Classic continues. We actually don't have them pinned down precisely yet. We're trying to figure it out as we go forward.

We want to take a look at the Classic community as it progresses through the content, and determining what seems reasonable.

There's power in flexibility, to align with the appetite of the community, and making sure they are being fed at a reasonable rate. We want to make sure we are being true to that.Battle for Azeroth and ClassicWorld of WarcraftWith the release date announced, we’re all very excited to jump into classic, but for the newer players...What is their advice for someone that has not played Classic WoW that is undecided about jumping in? Any general advice on how they can enjoy and balance time for both BFA and Classic?

Classic is about playing with friends. Get your friends together and start playing. Do those quests, run those dungeons, level up together. Experience what that camaraderie felt like because that's what made Classic to me.

Also try to make new friends! When you're out questing, take your time to enjoy the journey. If you get to a hard quest, do a /who in your zone and find people to help and make new friends.

While we didn't get a release date for 8.2, that's likely also this summer. Will Blizzard make an effort to avoid overlap between future Classic and BFA content drops?

From the production end, we want to give people content as quickly as they can. People are hungry for Classic, they're hungry for Rise of Azshara.

We also have operational concerns--the operations team is responsible for deploying a lot of this stuff. Deploying things on the same day would be irresponsible for them. But we want to make sure we can give you the content as soon as we possibly can.

We choose our release dates strategically to make sure the burden on the team is reasonable, and that the content cadence makes players hungry for more...while still getting it.Modern Systemsloot trading systemWe’ve seen modern systems affect things like loot trading, and another system players are curious about is how the perks from the Authenticator, such as the 4 bag slots, will impact classic WoW. Will you get the extra bag slots, or other perks, in Classic WoW, if you have they authenticator?

Bag slots are a BFA thing only. I really do want to encourage people to use the Authenticator but we couldn't think of a good way to incentivize that while also staying authentic to Classic WoW.

In order to make sure we hit that authentic mark, we couldn't give you extra bag slots. Managing your inventory was absolutely part of the original experience! Is it worth 5 silver to buy a six slot bag?

Back in the Classic Demo players noticed that the client was a modified version of the retail one, including improvements like water/terrain graphics. That being said, which of these modern graphic improvements are planned to be available in Classic? Even if optional, will players be able to have improved terrain or even improved models?

We wanted to make sure that you could get the Classic look exactly right if you wanted that, so we have a Classic graphics button option, to make sure you don't see things that weren't in Classic. If you hit that button, it will turn that ground clutter all the way down, with all the objects exactly where they were too.

At the same time in 1.12, you could use a hidden console variable to set the ground clutter very high. So it will behave the same way in Classic WoW, if you turn the slider way up.API SupportThere are many wonderful community tools that have popped up over the course of WoW’s history, that rely upon the API for profiles added in later expansions, such as quest or mount tracking, or character gear recommendations. Will there be classic support in the API?

I think we plan to do it, but not sure if we'll have it for launch. We're trying to make sure that API is available, but the timeline for launch we're unsure about.

In the same line as the game API question, if present, will classic have the same addon API as retail, an outdated version, or a completely different addon API? Add-on authors are worried about having to maintain multiple versions for both retail and classic.

It will be a different one, but I don't know if I would categorize it as completely different. We are starting with our modern codebase, and that includes the modern API, but there are addon APIs that don't make sense for Classic, and in those cases, we're trying to roll things back to reflect how the game behaved back then.

Castbars are a good example of this. Everyone remembers that they had a castbar in Classic, but that was a castbar addon, and you couldn't actually query the status except on yourself. So they were all basically guesses as to what was going on. That meant you didn't actually know what spell someone else was casting, or how long it would last--you had to figure it out and guess. As that's gameplay-affecting, we wanted to restore that functionality.

In terms of maintaining--for every content release we do for World of Warcraft today, we will change the API pretty regularly. That's not something we plan to do with Classic though. Once that API is defined and out there for the public, it's not something that's going to change. Certainly not at the cadence that the Battle for Azeroth APIs change. Hopefully maintenance won't be too terrible.Classic Endgameexplosive viewership statisticsCurious about what you envision for the endgame of Classic WoW. BFA has seen lots of esports growth with the Mythic Dungeon International, for example, which is a relatively-new type of content for WoW. Do you have any plans to encourage esports like speed-running, which is popular in other classic games, or are you seeing what the community comes up with?

I think the community will speak to us the best, showing their interests, what they watch on Twitch, what they do and organize on their own. There's been super-powerful moments in WoW's history which have been led by the community. And I think if they start doing these things and it makes sense to foster these efforts, we absolutely will.

I can think of a yearly event we actually put in the game--the Running of the Gnomes. It was a big community event, and now it's a micro-holiday.
