World of Warcraft: Classic Survival Guide
World of Warcraft: Classic is right around the corner, releasing worldwide on
(August 26th for the Americas)
. World of Warcraft Classic is a faithful recreation of the original WoW experience, as it was all the way back in 2006. Everything from Vanilla WoW, including combat mechanics, talent trees, character models, dungeons and zone layouts, has been thoroughly restored to recreate a truly authentic experience, allowing veteran players to revive their adventures in the older version of Azeroth, as well as granting newer players a true taste of the game as it was in its infant years.
Content included in the launch phase of World of Warcraft Classic includes the entire leveling experience from 1 to 60, as well as access to the very first raids to ever grace World of Warcraft:
Covil da Onyxia
. To fully recreate the Vanilla experience, content added during Vanilla WoW will be added in staggered phases. You can read more information about what will be available for each Classic WoW phase
in this news article
An Authentic Recreation
World of Warcraft has evolved a lot in the past 15 years, and players who have not played in Classic may not be aware of how things used to be so long ago. Below, there are quick mentions of things that will change from Battle for Azeroth to Classic, as well as more detailed articles talking about the most important changes.
Classic zones do not scale according to your level. There are no heirlooms that you can purchase to increase your experience gains/survivability. Speaking of survivability, there are many Elite quests that are tough! The difficulty between zones vary, and you will often find yourself bouncing between multiple zones completing quests suitable for your level.

Dungeon quests are now scattered across Azeroth, instead of being offered at the beginning of each dungeon. Many high-level dungeons are locked and require keys of some sort to gain access to the dungeon. Many dungeons were streamlined through WoW's lifespan, but are back to their original forms in Classic. You thought Blackrock Depths was long and confusing? That's almost all Classic dungeons!

First Aid, retired in Battle for Azeroth, is now back in full force. Profession recipes do not have ranks that reduce material costs or grant increased effects. Professions are not capped by expansion, you must level from 1-300 to get all their benefits in Classic. However, they're very useful once more!

Many race and class combinations are not available in Classic. Classes added after Classic are not available.
are only available for Alliance players, and
are only available to Horde players. Classes have multiple class-exclusive quests that teach you advanced abilities and grant powerful class-specific gear.
Potions no longer have a cooldown in combat, so you can use them repeatedly. As there is no longer a bonus for wearing a specific armor type, certain DPS classes can use inferior armor type gear with superior stats. There is a strict limit of debuffs a target can have at a time, so a raid has to choose carefully what debuffs they want on the boss. You need to stack Hit and Spell Hit gear to ensure all your abilities and casts can hit your desired target. You also need to work on weapon levels by constantly hitting enemies to ensure you can hit mobs at the same level as you.

Active mitigation is no longer a thing - Mitigation in Classic is almost all exclusively passive, coming from the stats in your gear. You also need to level your Defense stat - Not only by letting enemies hit you until you hit max defense, you will also have to collect gear with +Defense. If you're not at the Defense cap of 440 at level 60, you have a chance of being critically hit by lv63 (Boss) mobs.

As there is no longer a bonus for wearing a specific armor type, certain healing classes can use inferior armor type gear with superior stats. You're able to conserve Mana by downranking your healing spells - Using inferior ranks heal for less, but also use less Mana. Spirit is back as a stat, and with it, a very important healing rule, the 5-second rule: Your Spirit Mana regeneration only kicks in during combat if you spend 5 seconds without casting any spells.

Getting Started with Classic WoW

button. After selecting an installation folder, your Classic WoW client will start downloading, and the Battle.net Client will show you once the game is available to play.
Once Classic WoW is fully downloaded and installed, simply press
and prepare for your new adventure in Azeroth!
Once you enter Classic WoW, you will need to select a realm to play on, from a pool of distinct realm names and types.
If you're playing with friends, make sure you
pick the same realm as your friends
- In Classic WoW, you can only group with people on the same realm as you!
If you're looking for a group of like-minded players for your Classic adventures, good places to start your search are the official Classic New Guild Listings forum (

There are several different realm types to choose from, each with very different playstyles. Choose carefully what realm type suits you best!
The best realm type for new players, this type is best for players who do not wish to engage in open-world PvP. All zones, with the exception of capital cities and starting zones, are considered Contested. Players are unable to attack each other in Contested zones, unless they choose to flag themselves for World PvP (by using the command /PvP while in-game).
(Player vs. Player): This realm type allows for open-world PvP to happen at any moment in all areas, except areas that are considered safe (such as the starting zones, the first areas where players begin their adventure).
(Role-Play): These realms are ideal for players who wish to take part in role-playing their character with others! Rules are more strict on RP realms, such as having to choose a name that would fit within the Warcraft universe, and maintaining a positive atmosphere for those who are roleplaying their characters.
(Role-Play, Player vs. Player): These realms follow the same ruleset as the RP realms, but with the added rules of PvP servers. Except mighty combat against the opposite faction in contested areas!
After you've selected your desired realm, you'll be brought to the Character Selection screen, where you will be able to create a new character to begin your journey with. You're able to choose your faction, class and race, as well as customize many options in your character (such as skin color, facial features and hairstyles) and give them their very own name. To start the process, simply click on
Create New Character
to begin creating your character.
Create your character very carefully to make sure you like its appearance, as you will not be able to change it after your character is created! You can use

Addons are an important aspect of WoW's gameplay, while also displaying the community's dedication and passion for improving the game for everyone playing it. Below, you will find recommendations for addons to help you start on your journey. Addons are an optional improvement to the game, but it is generally not a bad idea to have some to enhance your Classic experience.

Advanced Interface Options
- Exposes all interface options hidden by Blizzard. Also includes a useful cvar explorer, perfect for players that like to tweak their WoW Client.
- Addon to check all loot tables from the game. Useful as Classic does not have a Dungeon Journal like retail.
- This addon shows the selling price of an item on the game's tooltip for that item.
- Application and addon used to help build our database!
- Robust interface addon that allows the player to create auras to track different aspects of the game. Players can also import auras created by other players by visiting repositories like
- This is a simple, yet remarkably useful addon to have, regardless of what you're doing in the game. This adds a simple timer over your cooldown abilities. That lets you know precisely when they're going to come back up, so you know when you can use them again, or line up major abilities with cooldowns as necessary.
- Powerful quest helper. Adds many different Quest QoL improvements to the interface, making questing similar to retail.
- Another Powerful quest helper, an alternative to Questie.
How to Install Addons on Classic WoW
Installing addons in Classic follows the same flow as installing one manually in retail WoW. First, you must download the addon from
or other Addon repositories. Then, you need to extract the addon in your Classic WoW folder, which will look something like this:
C:\World of Warcraft\_classic_\Interface\AddOns
Note that the interface folder won't exist if you haven't opened the Classic client in your computer yet. If successful, a new button will appear when you reach the character screen, that is used to list all addons installed.
Another way to install addons is to directly download them via the
Twitch Desktop App
. After downloading the app and installing it, you must go to
Mods > World of Warcraft
, and then select your Classic WoW installation folder. After this, you can search for addons and install them on Classic WoW directly within the Twitch Client!
Adjust your Settings
One of the first things you will want to do is ensure your game settings are perfect - That includes sounds, camera angles, graphics, and more. Configurations like
graphic and sound settings
can be done from before even logging into the game, from the account login screen or the character selection screen.
camera following style
and the very important
feature are accessible from the Interface menu, after you properly log into the game. Auto-loot is very important in Classic, as there is no AoE loot, so you will want to gain as much time as you can by automatically looting mobs!
Another configuration worth looking into is
- Set up your keys to make sure you maximize your effectiveness. If you're new to keybinding, we have a very useful guide that can help you get started with a setup that works for you -
The Art of Effective Keybinding
As you first log into your character, one of the first things you will notice is a NPC with a
golden exclamation mark
above his head not far from your location. This NPC will give you your first
. Go to the NPC and talk to him by clicking on him with your right mouse button and you will have your very first mission!
As you complete quests and gain levels, new quests will open. Maintain a sharp eye around your surroundings for those gold exclamation marks for new quests! In case you encounter a
silver exclamation point
on top of a NPC's head, this means the NPC has a quest for you, but you need to level up more to be able to start this quest.
Are you done for the night? Once you're done with playing Classic for the day, you will want to find an
. World of Warcraft has a system called
, where are able to gain a bonus modifier to your experience gains while you're logged off. While you can gain this bonus whenever you're logged off, you will gain it at a much faster rate when logged off at an Inn or another sort of resting area, like Capital Cities.
If you have the default UI, you will know that you're within a Rest area when your player portrait gains a golden aura, and a
speech bubble with a zzz icon
appears near your character portrait. Another way to find out if you're at a Rest area is to simply try to log off - When you're at a Rest area, you will be able to log off immediately. In any other areas of the game, you will be prompted with a 20-second log-off window before your character actually logs off the game.
When you have accumulated rested experience, your experience bar,
, will instead have a
. Additionally, a notch will appear in your experience bar, showing exactly how much rested experience you have. While you have rested experience accumulated, monsters will earn you double the experience on kill. Once you run out of rested experience, your experience bar will turn purple once more, and a message will appear in your chat, You feel normal.
Although rested experience is by no means required to level your character, it is a nice bonus and serves as a nice catch-up mechanic for those who are not able to play the game as often.

Characters in World of Warcraft are able to learn new, more powerful abilities as they level up. You will not learn these abilities automatically, though; You will need to find a Class trainer in any capital cities to learn new abilities. Each ability costs a certain amount of gold, and you might not want to purchase spells that you won't see a lot of use while leveling.

Professions in Classic WoW
One of the ways you can improve your character is via professions - A system where you use reagents from around the world to craft utilities such as consumables, armor, weapons, and enhancements for your armor. There are nine primary professions a character can learn, and you're able to select two professions at a time. You can learn each profession from trainers all around Azeroth.

You will need to join up with a group to complete dungeons. Good places to do so is joining the Looking For Group channel (by using the chat command /join LookingForGroup) ingame, or going to a capital city and using the Trade or General chats to find a group. Once a group is formed, you will need to head to the dungeon's entrance. Another way to find a group for a dungeon is moving to the dungeon's entrance and using the Meeting Stone outside to look for groups for that specific dungeon.
Another good reason to do dungeons is to complete dungeon quests, which usually award good gear. Some of these quests can be pretty well out of the way.
