Guerreiro
s have one of the most difficult times leveling in Classic WoW, so many players will want to try and break up the solo questing experience by hopping into a dungeon group and doing some DPS. But that doesn't always work out and you might be asked to tank. If you find yourself tanking as a Warrior in Classic WoW, without much experience, we have ten quick tips to help you prepare for this role!
Classic WoW Warrior Leveling Guides Updated for Dungeon Tanking
Our Classic WoW Leveling Guide has been updated with a few new sections, covering this exact topic with more depth and information. It covers good shields to pick up while leveling for a Tank Set, what a Warrior should focus on while in a Dungeon Cleave setup, as well as various tips and suggestions. In addition to that, we also have a full Warrior Tanking Guide, which goes into great depth of what to expect as a Tank at Level 60.

1. Your Build Doesn't
Really
Matter
A huge misconception in Classic WoW is that the dungeon group's Tank
has
to be Protection. This is not true.
Guerreiro
s can easily throw on a Shield and run into a Dungeon, regardless of their Build, and tank it just fine. At the higher levels, over 50 or so, it might be difficult to do, but it is still possible. What is much more important than your Build is having the Skills and Abilities purchased from the Class Trainer. Many Players will skip "Tanking Skills" as they level and if that's the case, then Tanking will be a problem. As long as you keep your Talents upgraded to the highest ranks as you level, tanking will be a breeze.
2. Gear Matters, But Not By That Much
Many players will level up and pick up gear for a "Tanking Set" that they carry with them in their bags. A really important part of a Tank Set is a good Shield, typically you want something with a lot of Armor on it. Armor is one of the easiest ways to build up damage mitigation on your Warrior, which means you will have a much easier time tanking, which also means your Healer will have an easier time healing you!
3. Understanding What Attributes Are Most Important
Armor, Block, Defense Rating, and Dodge are just some examples of valuable Stats on a Tank
Guerreiro
. If you aren't completely sure what each of these Stats do and what they offer your Tank, definitely read our
Overview of Stats Guide
, which breaks down every Stat and Attribute in Classic WoW.
4. Positioning Mobs For Your Group
Depending on the type of group you have, you might have multiple Melee Damage Dealers in your dungeon. Melee will typically want to hit the enemy monster from behind, which makes it impossible for the enemy to Parry or Block an attack. While the Tank is fighting mobs, gathering Threat, it might be beneficial to position the enemy monsters in a specific way, to make it easier for Melee to stand behind the mob. If there is some type of ground mechanic, like fire (
Don't stand in it!
), be sure to leave enough space for the Melee to stand behind the mob.
5. Don't Allow Mobs To Hit Your Back
For the same reason Melee want to hit the enemy from behind, you should try to avoid allowing monsters to hit yours! Because you want to Block as many attacks as possible, you want to be facing the enemy monsters. In the situation where you have a large group in front of you, just strafe or backup away from the enemy mobs to try and "group" them up a little, where they are all in front of you.
6. AoE Tanking And Tab Targeting
When put into the situation where the
Guerreiro
is required to AoE Tank a large group, there are a few little things that can make a big difference.
Brado Desmoralizador
is a great way to generate large amounts of threat on a group of enemies. The Tank can also tab target across groups of enemies, checking to make sure they aren't attacking or spellcasting on another target. If they are, the Tank can
Provocar
that specific mob.
7. Using Line Of Sight To Your Advantage
Spellcasters will stop casting if you are out of line of sight. When you need a Spellcaster to run closer to you, stand behind a wall and wait, they will eventually stop casting and run over to you. This is important because sometimes groups of enemy monsters will have 1 or 2 Spellcasters in the group, and after being pulled, the Spellcaster doesn't move. This can be a particularly annoying situation, especially if there is a patrol group nearby. If the patrol group gets too close to the Spellcaster, they will aggro as well.
8. Wait To pull If Your Healer Is Drinking
This is one of the most basic fundamentals to Tanking and the simplest to understand. Just think about your Healer's Mana as Health for the Tank. If you pull when your Healer has no Mana, you've effectively lost a few thousand Health points!
9. Good Communication Is Always Vital
Just asking simple things like, "Ready?" can go a long way. A big part of Classic WoW is relying on other players while playing in a Dungeon or even in the open world. Communication is always a vital key to success. Before pulling, if you aren't sure, go ahead and ask the group if they are Ready, or if they need to drink, or even if they want you to pick up the pace, sometimes groups like to move fast, going from pull to pull a tad quicker. If you want to make a good impression as a Tank, ask your group if there is something they want you to do differently!
10. Knowing How Threat Works
Threat is generated for most Classes based on damage dealt. If a
Ladino
or
Bruxo
is getting a bunch of Critical Strikes, they will most likely be gaining too much threat. Keep an eye on how much damage a player is doing, and be prepared for the top damage dealer to potentially pull the mob or even the Boss! Try to have the DPS hold off for a few seconds until you can get some hits in first as well as several stacks of
Fender Armadura
.
You can learn all about this mechanic in our
Classic Threat Guide
