Playing World of Warcraft on a Solid State or Hard Disk Drive
24/9/2020 em 00:38
first announced its system requirements
, players were shocked and confused to find that the minimum requirements now demanded a Solid State Drive (SSD) rather than a normal Hard Disk Drive (HDD) many users are familiar with. Although those requirements were
quickly updated to reflect that the game could be run with a typical hard drive
, many players have been quick to point out that WoW can take ages to load on older drives and upgrading to a SSD is one of the most useful upgrades gamers can invest in, as it results in significantly better performance.
went a step further, creating a video to showcase the practical difference between loading WoW on a Solid State Drive as opposed to a standard Hard Disk Drive; loading into Legion Dalaran and then heading to the Vindicaar on both, showing in real time just how profound the difference can be, as the hard drive takes almost three times as long as the solid state.
Hard Disk Drive load times above, versus Solid State Drive load times below.
Every individual user's mileage may vary, but this is just one area where the difference can be seen, with comments offering anecdotes regarding the lost time in arena preparation while waiting for slower players to load in, or the greater amount of glitches and missing assets even after the loading screen is gone, as well as how beneficial putting your computer operating system on a solid state rather than a hard disk can improve start up and load times.
Sold State Drives aren't exactly new any more, but Hard Disk Drives have been the standard for decades now, and are still widely used, especially among gamers who may have gotten their computer some time ago and not regularly upgraded it. Although World of Warcraft's system requirements update every expansion, it's not really a hard game to run at minimum settings, so even relatively old computers can continue to play it, and therefore less tech savvy players aren't pushed toward using the latest and greatest technology. Even today, HDDs continue to outsell SSDs due to their greater recording capacity, price per unit of storage, and greater lifetime, while SSDs remain in the world of power users more concerned with speed and power consumption even if they do end up costing a bit more as a result.
has a handy little infographic showcasing some of the differences, but there are plenty of articles, videos, and other information available on the web which examines the difference between the two.
If you're looking at performance upgrades for Shadowlands, this is a great example of why getting a Solid State Drive is one of the best upgrades you can make on any computer, even above things such as getting a new graphics card, because the benefits extend beyond just gaming. The dramatically faster read and write speeds help with all sorts of other tasks, from starting up your computer, transferring files, and more. Many users opt for the best of both worlds, using smaller capacity and more budget friendly SSDs for their operating system and important games, alongside a larger capacity HDDs for storing music, pictures, videos, and games which are less sensitive to long load times. There are options for users of all budges, so if you're still gaming on a Hard Disk, take a look and see what you can do to improve your experience before
