One of the biggest questions that players had after discovering the destination of Alexandros Mograine in the Shadowlands is how is it possible that Mograine was wielding a sword that resembled Ashbringer. Although we have learned from previous interviews that his sword is not actually Ashbringer, as that would be impossible, there's finally in-game answers for this question!
Fatebringer Origins
Bonesmith Heirmir is a Maldraxxi blacksmith that originally forged weapons for the House of the Chosen, before the
events of the Maldraxxus leveling storyline
. During the storyline, Heirmir is the one that helps us reforge the Blade of the Primus, a sword blade left by the Primus embedded on a rock at the House of the Chosen, into a usable weapon, and the key to finally open the Seat of the Primus, where we ultimately
learn more about the missing leader of Maldraxxus and his relationship with the Jailer
.
During the Maldraxxus storyline, we rescue Alexandros Mograine from the clutches of the Maw, and notice he wields a sword similar to Ashbringer. Although it is not explicitly stated in-game by Mograine, we learned from the
Shadowlands Lore Interview with Steve Danuser
that the sword Mograine is wielding is not the original Ashbringer, but a newly crafted sword, named Fatebringer.
How does Mograine have the Ashbringer when I happen to personally know, and play, the current wielder of the Ashbringer?
So that's just a little bit of confusion over some data mining. Early on when our quest designers are putting in content, we don't always have the final models for things. And so, for a while, they were using a version of one of the Ashbringer appearances, but recently we put in a unique sword for Mograine. It still looks similar to the Ashbringer, but it's not the Ashbringer - It's actually a sword called Fatebringer.
One of the storylines that you’ll see as you’re playing through the different Covenants... in Maldraxxus for example - that is a culture that celebrates who you were in life and the accomplishments that you had - Maldraxxus is all about striving to climb this pyramid and become the best that you can be. And so it was natural for Alexandros Mograine, the original Ashbringer, to fashion himself a sword that recalled the blade that had made him famous long ago. There are some questlines that people haven't played yet, where it calls out the name of that sword, but it is not the Ashbringer. It's something that he had forged for himself in Maldraxxxus.
If you choose to pledge yourself to the Necrolord Covenant, you can talk to Bonesmith Heirmir inside the Seat of the Primus, where he has a dialogue option talking about Mograine's sword. In this dialogue, Heirmir mentions that he is the one that crafted Fatebringer for Mograine when he became a Baron for the House of the Chosen!
> Can you tell me more about Alexandros's sword?
Fatebringer, eh? I made it for him when he was named baron. He wanted somethin' similar to what he used in life. Based on yer reaction, I'm guessin' you recognize the shape a bit. I guess if I shared a title with a sword I'd be pretty attached to it.
It's one of my finer creations. Alexandros fought hard to come by some of the materials that went into it. Not sure where the skull came from, but it's certainly not from Maldraxxus.
The Skull in the Sword
The fact that Fatebringer was crafted from hard-to-obtain materials, including a skull of unknown origins, draws an interesting parallel to the original Ashbringer - the original Ashbringer was forged by Magni Bronzebeard, using a crystal that Mograine had found on the corpse of a dead orc warlock at Blackrock Spire during the second war.
The crystal was originally mentioned to as a "living embodiment of shadow", and once Mograine touched the crystal, it tainted his hand. Mograine kept this crystal a secret for years, until just before the Scourge invasion of Lordaeron, where the crystal was revealed to the other leaders of the Order of the Silver Hand. The Order attempted to destroy the crystal, but the bombardment of holy spells instead infused it with enough light to become a crystal of pure light and the material Mograine believed would smite any undead army if molded into a weapon. You can witness a recreation of this event in the Old Hillsbrad Foothills dungeon, by heading to Southshore and entering the inn.
Who's Skull Is In The Sword?
Bonesmith Heirmir made it very clear that the skull used to create Fatebringer was not only one Mograine fought very hard to obtain, but one not from Maldraxxus. Although we do not know the answer for this, we can speculate on a very likely option.
One of the most obvious ones would be that of Renault Mograine, Alexandros' oldest son and the one who murdered and corrupted Alexandros. Renault murdered Alexandros by pulling Ashbringer through his heart, corrupting both the sword and Alexandros himself. After the corrupted spirit of Mograine is defeated in the original Naxxramas, the wielder of the
A Crematória Corrompida
could go to Scarlet Monastery and watch a special event in which Mograine's spirit, still residing within the corrupted sword, slew Renault.
Editor's note: This event was slightly retconned with Wrath of the Lich King - The
A Crematória Corrompida
was canonically given to Darion Mograine, then a recruit of the Argent Dawn, after the first assault on Naxxramas. Alexandros' spirit within the Corrupted Ashbringer guided Darion to Scarlet Monastery, and Darion was the one to confront Mograine, with Alexandros' spirit eventually coming out of the blade to kill Renault. Darion would eventually manage to free Alexandros from the sword by sacrificing himself via plunging Corrupted Ashbringer through his heart. Alexandros was free, but Darion was now a servant of the Scourge.
These events can be read on the
Ashbringer series of comics
.
This is further supported by a Necrolord campaign quest, in which Mograine is
taught why he was sent to Maldraxxus and not Bastion
, a realm that according to him, would be better suited for a devout follower of the Light. During this questline, Alexandros confronts his past memories, one of them being of Renault. Alexandros mentions that Renault's betrayal haunts him even in death, and in the end of the quest, it is revealed that Alexandros was sent to Maldraxxus because his memories were his source of strength, not a burden to be taken away by Kyrian rituals.
Alexandros Mograine: Renault. My eldest... my demise.
Alexandros Mograine: His betrayal haunts me, even in death. My son... Would this pain be best forgotten?
Alexandros Mograine: Please... let us move on.
---
Xandria: The Arbiter saw that your memories are not a burden, but your source of strength. This is why you belong in Maldraxxus.
Alexandros Mograine: I see that now. Honor may have forsaken Maldraxxus... but together, we will restore what has been lost!
With this, the possibility of Renault's memory granting him strength is quite literal! Do you think this could be Renault Mograine's skull? Or do you have other theories?
