Blizzard is Looking into Class-Wide Artifact Transmogs in Shadowlands
09/7/2020 em 23:56
interview with MrGM
, Lead Game Designer Morgan Day clued us in on another potential feature in the works, class-wide artifact transmog! This would allow a Beast Mastery Hunter to transmog to the Marksmanship Hunter bow
Thas'dorah, Legado dos Correventos
, rather than being restricted to their normal gun and crossbow artifact appearances.
Edit: Blizzard has published a post clarifying that the update will make spec specific artifact transmog class wide, not useable by all classes, though strongly implying that the update will make it's way into

Will I be able to use an artifact weapon look for another class?
That is not the case here. This update will make spec-restricted transmog looks class-wide.
The feature may not be without restriction however, as Morgan specifically mentioned that the spec
must be able to use the weapon type
, but it's a little unclear exactly what that means, since
a Protection Paladin can wear a two-handed weapon... they just can't use all of their abilities with it. So whether that means we'll be able to see oddball combinations such as a Protection Paladin tanking with
O Punho de Prata
rather than a shield or a Survival Hunter clubbing enemies over the head with
is as of yet unknown. Even more alarming is what might happen if a Marksman or Beast Mastery Hunter tries to shoot arrows with
! Either way though, it would allow a Holy Paladin to heal with
, since they can use just about everything, and casters such as Shadow Priests should no longer be restricted to staves, wands, or daggers as the case may be.
With your artifact appearances in particular, making it so that if you can wield the weapon, irregardless if you are that spec or not, you can transmog into the appearance. A lot of the artifact transmogs are currently tied to the spec, and right now we're looking to expand that into something that is tied to the weapon type.
We may not get a definitive answer on this for some time, but while some classes may make out better than others with this change, it's still a neat idea which could very well lead to further relaxed transmog restrictions in the future. Perhaps most interesting is whether the concept would ever be applied outside of artifacts; as while the return of
Single Minded Fury
have been celebrated by many players, it's hard to forget that more options also leads to more loot problems - nobody wants to continually loot mismatched weapon types and be unable to use them together. A popularly suggested compromise was leaving the actual equipment alone and simply relaxing those transmog restrictions - still requiring a Fury Warrior to wield two-handed weapons, but allowing them to transmog to one-handed weapons instead. While it's unlikely this announcement heralds a reverse of the decision to add those options back, and we probably won't see it extend beyond artifacts anyway, it will certainly encourage players to continue their campaign for more options in the future.
And hey, if this inspires you to go hunt down some artifact weapon appearances which you didn't bother with before, check out our Legion Guide to Artifact Weapons, which includes pictures and links to each artifact weapon/appearance with helpful guides on how to acquire each and every one of them.
