under the Shadowlands Season 1 partition at the 95th percentile for Mythic difficulties.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of class balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1 as more players get deeper in Mythic difficulty. We will look more in-depth at the specs that had the most variance when compared to
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

In the data above, most specs retained their position or moved slightly. However, a handful of spec have major variances when looking at Mythic data. To help contextualize these changes, we've asked a couple of our class writers and class experts for their input to explain changes in rankings.
Demo's value is skewed on statistics because of an abysmally low sample size (700 parses) and high % of players being buffed by PI relative to other specs. It's a case of "nothing has changed but low sample size skewing things". It's still really not good - there is some shenanigans going on with PvP Battlemaster trinket and other health scaling for massive Tyrants.
It's a very very similar situation that Demo faced in Legion with Thal'kiel's Consumption (with demonic consumption) is based on. The most agregious example of this was in blackrook hold where you triple dipped on the
hp scaling from the last boss
Now that more guilds are entering Mythic difficulty and logging kills on the earlier and (relatively) easier bosses, lots of non-meta specs are seeing rising popularity. At this point gear is at a level where requiring certain specs isn't necessary, and playing Arcane is perfectly possible on at least Shriekwing and Huntsman Altimor. The number of Arcane logs falls massively after these two, with fewer than 100 players using the spec on every other boss.
Frost has also been a non-meta spec until this week, but the 9% hotfix buff looks to be addressing that: although Frost logs below Arcane, it has more than double the number of recorded kills this week (1,390 vs 596). Of course, neither hold a candle (pun intended) to Fire, which has more than 36,000 recorded kills.
With this new week comes buffs for Frost Mage:
Frost - All damage abilities increased by 9%.
With this buff, Frost is suddenly much closer to its peers, jumping from dead last to below middle of the pack. Most of the reason for this jump is the increase to damage, but I also believe a part of this change is due to more people playing the spec in general.
People who have been keeping up with Soul Ash should now have ash to spare after upgrading one legendary to max level. Having extra ash laying around when you read that huge buffs are coming to your other spec is a good motivator to get people to try it out. Because the sample size is now larger from that and more people killing the bosses in general, we get a clearer picture of where frost stacks up.
The recent buffs encouraged many players to try out Fury, wishing to evaluate the changes for themselves, wanting to change things up and try something new, or simply due to enjoying the spec more, especially among top players who have already cleared several bosses in the raid - allowing them to use their gear and successful strategies to earn high ranks on farm bosses. The results have been mixed; Fury is performing very well on some fights (particularly Sun King's Salvation, The Council of Blood, and Mythic Stone Legion Generals), but Arms still dominates on most others. Both in terms of balance and raid mechanics, this is probably the best balanced we've seen the two specs in quite some time, so we should expect rankings to continue to fluctuate for the foreseeable future, though it's a sharp reminder that neither spec is doing particularly well, and are largely fighting over the position of best of the worst.
