We learn more about the fate of Garrosh Hellscream, former Warchief of the Horde, in Shadowlands from the
Afterlives: Revendreth
animated short.
This article contains spoilers for future Revendreth zone and Venthyr covenant quests.
Revendreth Quests Venthyr Covenant Castle Nathria Raid
Throughout the cinematic, Sire Denathrius essentially delivers a propaganda speech to the citizens of Revendreth, as charming music plays interspersed with lavish scenes of his gothic kingdom. Sometimes, this facade gives way to the darker reality powering the realm: souls being constantly tortured for anima, instead of the Venthyr doing their duty to help redeem them. We later learn through
Revendreth questing
that Sire Denathrius has formed a pact with the Jailer to siphon Anima into the Maw, and it looks like our old friend Garrosh is being farmed as an Anima battery instead of working towards redemption.
Originally a strong leader in the Northrend campaign, Garrosh grew power-hungry when appointed Warchief, pursuing any means necessary to achieve Orc supremacy. He is responsible for the bombing of Theramore, destruction of the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, the attempted murder of Vol'jin, city-wide war in the Siege of Orgrimmar, and escaping to AU Draenor to unify the Iron Horde. It makes sense why his soul would be sent to Revendreth, a realm providing one last chance for sinners to atone before facing eternal damnation in the Maw. His position of power as a ruler of the Horde has also granted him a large amount of Anima, which coupled with his pride and stubbornness, means he'd be in Revendreth for a while--even without Denathrius' ulterior motives.
While the cinematic does not call Garrosh out by name, there are several close-up shots with Garrosh's unique jewelry: piercings on each ear, nose ring, and black band on each outer tooth. At one point in the cinematic, Sire Denathrius talks about the "old reliables, our workhorses" as the camera cuts to show Garrosh tortured. This implies there are more souls they abuse in this fashion, which leads to the possibility of encountering additional failed leaders from WoW's history in future Venthyr quests.
While we've seen the Anima imbalance leading to major problems in
Afterlives: Ardenweald
, the Anima shortage in Revendreth appears entirely mismanaged due to frivolous reasons. Denathrius inhales a lavish goblet of anima at the end of the cinematic, and earlier we see the nobility feasting on anima while poorer citizens are forced to turn in their anima to the kingdom, severely punished when they disobey. Even if you don't know that Denathrius and the Jailer are secretly working together, the mismanagement of Anima amongst Revendreth's citizens is still jarring to watch.
We later learn in the
Venthyr Covenant Campaign
that Kael'thas Sunstrider was slated for a similar fate, as his role as a powerful ruler on Azeroth infused him with a large amount of Anima. Denathrius kept experimenting on Kael, increasing his power through even more Anima, which left Kael quite unstable and feeling the burdens of others sins, not just his own.
In the sinister confines of Castle Nathria, souls are being tortured not to redeem their sins, but to amplify them. The prideful Prince Kael'thas has been burdened with the sins of others, and his pain and hatred are channeled to make him a powerful weapon. This has imperiled his soul like no other, and it must be saved--if only to keep it from being unleashed upon the Shadowlands.
While Kael'thas' ultimate fate is still unclear at the end of the covenant campaign, we're able to at least free him from Denathrius' experiment and set him on a possible path of redemption.
We have not encountered Garrosh Hellscream in the Venthyr Covenant campaign so it's unclear what happens to him after
Afterlives: Revendreth
and Castle Nathria, the first raid in Shadowlands which has us rescuing Kael'thas and defeating Denathrius. We have datamined a few things like
Evocar Garrosh
and
Garrosh
, as well as hints pointing towards a Mythic-only Denathrius phase due to the ability
Através do Espelho
, but nothing conclusive pointing to the return of Garrosh. Will Garrosh still be needed as a mana battery to stabilize the realm, even after Denathrius' fall from power? Will we encounter him in a later patch, in a similar fashion to Kael'thas? With Thrall now in the Shadowlands, will the two former Warchiefs come face-to-face once again? Let us know your thoughts!
