The Year of the Phoenix
is in full force, and Blizzard's card game honestly couldn't look better right now: With Hearthstone's current expansion Ashes of Outland, Team 5 not only introduced massive changes to the game's economy and its first new class in five years, the Demon Hunter; it is also the new revolutionary core design philosophy which enables the development team to apply swift balance updates if needed and thus keeps the game feel fresh and fair.
These updates make it feel like the last two months since expansion release went by in a heartbeat. However, that doesn't stop Hearthstone's upcoming content update from hitting the servers!
The
Felfire Festival of Music and VENGEANCE
already opened on June 9 and will provide Hearthstone fans with four weeks full of game updates and twisted lore tidbits about the Rusted Legion and Outland, the stage once set for the Burning Crusade expansion and one of Warcraft's most iconic landscapes!
I'm Tharid, a writer for Wowhead's sister site Hearthstone Top Decks, and I'll be talking about Hearthstone's brand new expansion content update. If you want to check out the most recent news about the expansion as well as the new Standard year, head over to

Battleground Update: Pirates
While we won't see any new regular cards released during the Felfire Festival, Hearthstone's popular "auto battler" Battlegrounds receives a whole lot of brand-new content:
Patch 17.4 introduces three pirate-themed heroes. And while Captain Hooktusk is exclusive to Hearthstone lore, the other two should ring a bell among WoW fans: First there is
Captain Eudora
, leader of the Bilge Rats and part of the
Council o' Captains
in Freehold. Eudora has been a figurehead in Blizzard's cross-promotion intentions. In Hearthstone, she first appeared in the single-player adventure of Rise of Shadows, the Dalaran Heist. After her short liaison with the League of E.V.I.L, she is now out for even more glory in treasure in the Hearthstone universe, and her Hero Power couldn't be more fitting.
Next in line is
Skycap'n Kragg
. Unlike Eudora, Kragg first appeared in Hearthstone and - as one of the few exceptions - has been added to the World of Warcraft second. As the first boss in Freehold, he and his trusty parrot Sharkbait embody the silly Pirate fantasy that both WoW and Hearthstone have in common. Similar to the other piratey heroes, Kragg's Hero Power revolves around gold and loot!
Besides the three new heroes, 17.4 also introduces a whole new minion type: Pirates. A total of 17 new minions have been added to the pool, and most of them form Battleground's sixth minion pool.
And while the lore around pirates in Warcraft is rich in detail, the pirates of Battlegrounds make a valid effort at telling their story. May it be the legions of the Southsea Freebooters and the
Bloodsail Buccaneers
, or the minions of
Admiral Ripsnarl
; all sorts of naval mercenaries find their new home in Hearthstone's auto battler.
But not only that: The Pirate minion type is also joined by infamous Warcraft figures like
Nat Pagle
and everybody's favorite gnoll king
Hogger
. These additions showcase Hearthstone's flexibility to write their own weird and funny story about beloved Warcraft characters, while still holding up to Warcraft's standards by introducing famous pirates like
Dread Admiral Eliza
who played an integral part in Rogue's artifact weapon questline back in Legion.
Last but not least, the most significant gameplay change introduced with patch 17.4 should not be missed: From now on, every Battlegrounds game will exclude one random minion type so that the minion pool feels consistent over time. This massive change enables Team 5 to keep developing new minion types while maintaining and balancing older minions and heroes. To see which minion types are active you can hover over Bob's card deck while in-game.

Single Player Adventure Part 1: Trial by Felfire
As per usual, every mid-expansion update comes with some sort of single player experience. For Ashes of Outland, the story adventure called Trial by Helfire tells the tale of a young night elf called Aranna Starseeker, sister of everybody's favorite explorer
Elise Starseeker
.
By the first look, Aranna seems to follow her sister's footsteps as a young explorer - until she gets involved with the so-called Rusted Legion, a new legion of mechanized demons, led by no less than Mecha-Jaraxxus, Dr. Boom's masterfully failed experiment.
Over the course of five free story chapters, we will learn about Aranna's first steps as a Demon Hunter who will fight against the Rusted Legion together with Illidan, the protagonist of the Ashes of Outland expansion. On the same day, June 17, Aranna will be placed into Battlegrounds as a new hero where she continues her Demon Hunter training!
Single Player Adventure Part 2: Trial by Felfire Challenges
For the first time in Hearthstone's single player history, we will be able to play through the "hardcore" part of an adventure separated from the "base" story experience.
In so-called challenges, we will face the "most brutal terrors of Outland" such as
Doom Lord Kazzak
. In this second phase starting on June 24 players have to bring their very own decks to rise to the challenges - similar to the Heroic encounters in past expansions. Nothing has been said about the actual story that will be told; however, we can expect Mecha-Jaraxxus teaming up with Outland's biggest baddies!
Felfire Tavern Brawls and Calendar
Last but not least, the Felfire Festival introduces two special Tavern Brawl formats: One is the infamous Burndown Tavern Brawl where sore losers will keep their opponent's deck to take revenge on the next innocent victim!
The Rumbledome Taven Brawl will start on July 1 and could turn into some sort of Battle Royale fight between all different classes - the only thing we know for sure is that "only one will win!".
Was that too much information? Well, Team 5 got us covered with this special Felfire Festival so that all players know when their favorite part of the festival drops!
