(( *Sigh* Rivendare's down and all my alts bore me. Luckely for you, though, this means Light and Death early! And when your done reading this, go check out
Taumen's and
Flyingshot's latest stories as well. While not as good as mine, they're still worth a read, lol.))
- The undead set up camp on the shore of Brightwater Lake. Morec sat on a tree stump, sharpening his runeblade.
- Then Darklock approached him. "Is there anything you require, master?" she querried.
- "Not at the moment, no," Morec replied, not making eye contact.
- "Is there anything I can do for you, master?" she asked, running her death-tinged hand along Morec's broad shoulders. She pushed herself close to him, whispering, "Is there anything I can do to
please you, master?"
- "You can go back to your patrol," the Death Knight said, "and leave me be."
- "Very well, master," Darklock said, turning around, "but you know where to find me, should you change your mind, master." She walked away, her hips swaying gracefully.
- Morec did not so much as turn his head. He had been in love once, in fact he still was. And if his time as a Paladin had taught him anything it was loyalty. He breifly looked around, making sure no one was nearby. When he had assured himself that he was alone he reached into the seceret compartment in his armor and pulled out Julia's necklace. He held it tight and close to him, anger and longing both surged through him.
- "Ah, I thought so," a voice commented. Morec jumped to his feet and spun around, Arceus was grinning. "You truly do have a free will. You truly do retain your old, mortal feelings."
- "So, now you're going to inform Itheac," Morec said, preparing to kill the Rogue.
- "No, actually, I'm not."
- "W-what?" Morec almost took a step back in surprise.
- "When I was first raised into undeath I had the same feelings, the same thoughts, that you have now. I remember wanting to be free of it all, to either rest forever or work against them. I hated them for what they did to me, for what they made me do to my family. But, as time went on, I realized what power the Scourge had given me. Why would I want to be rid of that? Why should I shun them for the gift, the power, that they had given to me? So, I made my choice."
- Arceus nodded. "When the time comes, I'm sure you'll make the same."
- "Perhaps," Morec said, he turned and walked off.
- Perhaps.
...
- Why? Why had Morec just retreated like that?
- Nilon had been struggling with this thought for an hour now. It didn't seem like the Death Knight to just let them go. Perhaps there was some good left in him?
- "Impossible," Valinaria had scoffed at the notion, "despite whatever he may have been in life, he's Scourge now. He exists only to terrorize and destroy. Take Quel'thalas, for example."
- Valinaria now walked with them, a determined expression on her face. "Whitemane was one of our greatest and a good freind of mine," she had explained. "It is my duty as a Crusader to grant her rest since she has fallen and avenge her death by killing her murderer. If your mission brings you into conflict with the Death Knight that killed her again, I plan to be there."
- Nilon had tried to persuade her otherwise, as had Celen - Nilon had found it odd that she was agreeing with him, but Valinaria - either stubborn or brave - would have none of it.
- They walked along the path that led to the Western Plaguelands. Scourge attacked every now and then, but they were far to weak to pose any real threat to the five allies. The ruins of the once grand Capital City - now razed and turned into a base of operations for the undead called the Forsaken - prompting a moment of silence for those fallen to the Scourge.
- After another hour of walking and repelling Scourge attacks, they made it to the pass that led into the Western Plaguelands.
- "Brace yourselves," Nilon said, "this is where things get difficult."
- "I know, I used to be stationed here," Valinaria said. "There are several Scarlet Crusade camps throughout this part of the Plaguelands. In case we need assistance we can always stop at one of them."
- "Thanks," Celen said bitterly, "but if your men were any example of how you people treat travelers, I, personally, would rather not pay them a visit." The Ranger could only agree.
- Steeling themselves for the horrors ahead, they proceded.
