Be prepared for a LONG grind. I was level 45 when I did this. I got just over 5 bars before the book dropped. At 145 exp per kill, that means I killed more than 200 of them. Suffice it to say, I was very happy to finally get the damned thing.

This quest item has an old style WoW drop rate. If you're levelling an alt character through grinding xp, you will thrive on this quest. I cleared the valley on my 40 shaman no less than six times before the quest item finally dropped. Nice herb action at least, as uglybot said above but, if you're power-levelling, good luck with the drop rate!

I suggest skipping this qst if it doesnt drop within 10 mobs.
It really isn't worth the time or experience you get.
Especially not when there are more people fighting here. It can take a long long time before it finally drops.
Lucky people may get it at the 1st or 2nd drop.

I got it off a swamwalker elder after clearing the whole area like 5 times or so...very very annoying in time consumption.

That being said, and based on what I've read in this thread, the drop seems to be completely random off whichever swampwalker is the lucky one to have taken the essay.

I'm glad that's over with.

Agree with all comments above. I kinda got lucky. Camp the Mire Lord. I killed 4 of them until the quest finally popped. The biggest disappointment about this quest is that I thought Nethergarde Keep would spawn more level 40+ quests.....NOT!!

If u hate camping, this is not a quest for you. (Loot sucks too:-o)

I had to grind for about 20 mins thats all! dont wait for theyr respawn just kill every mobs you see in the area! it will drop shortly!

I cannot express strongly enough how horrid the drop rate for this is. Your luck may vary, but I spent over an hour and half before finally giving up on this terrible waste of time. Avoid this quest unless you are a complete masochist.

After spending 2 hours grinding in the Misty Valley with no luck. (Including killing the boss 5 times) ran thru picking herbs. Ran into a Tangled Horror at 74,24 and it dropped it. If you go to Misty Valley, there is a good crap of items in the back of his cave.

It can drop from any of these plant things. I got my drop from a swampwalker (55,33).

I let one complete wild regeneration and it made no difference. Worked my way from the front of the valley and got the drop on my 10th kill.

So I killed about 10 of these guys before it dropped and I did wait until they healed on some of them but the one that dropped it I didn't give the chance to so.... Totally random, could take 1 kill could take 1K. Good luck!
Btw, lvl 40 ret pally.... super easy kills

omg this quest took forever. i spent maybe like an hour the first time around in Misty Valley but nothing dropped. got bored looked at these posts did 5 other quests and starting killing any swamp-like creature. finally dropped @ 41,35 from a Swampwalker.
unless you have other quests in Swamp of Sorrows i would suggest not to take this quest.

I did in this in 20 min as a 42 hunter - I had my pet attack, I autoattacked, then I alt tabbed out and did other stuff until each combat ended. Great way to catch up on non-WOW stuff, good exp, mediocre cash.
Wish i had Herbalism! That woulda totally made this useful.

I am a level 38. I entered the area from deadman's crossing and just kept going until i saw what was described in the quest as a plant looking thing (a swampwalker) killed it, and the scroll dropped. It was at the shifting mire, a little before fallow sanctuary ( where i died just after getting it lol) It only took that one guy though, so i think it just depends on your level.

I took this quest before the timed quest from darkshire-nethergarde and thought "sure I can get it on the way." I made it, but with 2 minutes to spare, and I really don't reccomend it, the drop rate is still terrible.

So to make this comment purposeful, don't take the timed quest and this quest at the same time,

However, if you're a levelling priest alchemist, these mobbs are perfect to grind on - easy to kill (dispelling their regenration) and occasionally drop herbs.

There are no tricks to quickly doing this quest - it is all based on how lucky you are. I started at halfway through level 41, and ended with the mob that I dinged 42 on. I did the math, and I killed roughly 150-200 mobs for it. If you do not enjoy grinding, kill 10-20 mobs and if you do not get the drop, abandon all hope!

Yo! peoples I have been working on this quest for now 2 hours and i finaly got the item from an Swampwalker Elder. My cords where 10,31. Also so you all know sometimes on any on-line game the programs put built in walls with in the game where there is a limented area with a game space or the map where they have an item or drop where you can get. so what i am trying to say is that if you are close to the cave where Mire Lord is and grind with in that area you should be able to get the drop a whole lot easyer. i would say a max of 7-9 spons and a min of 1-3 there is really no inbetween for this quest. if you all find any more hard quest with in the game let me know on this web sight and or e-mail me at benjamin.journey@wku.edu . i will do my best to find a way to make you live a little bet easyer.

Just a hint for lower lvl rogues doing this quest (I tried it out at lvl 38) there's a reason u have kick. just kick the things whenever they try to cast regrowth. Also, if you have poisons, use 'em, especially mind-numbing (this increass their cast time) and wound poison (reduces the effect of the healing cast).
Well, since I have yet to find the book, I'm off to pwn some more. This should prove that lvl has nothing to do w/ the drop rate. Unfortunatly. *grimace*

I think I can say for all that this quest is the worst quest in wow currently.

Deep vast ocean sea just gotten beated. 1 hour 2 mins for me and about 6 clears.

Best part is that I get an of the eagle bow and quest item when it fanilly drops of swampwalker elder.

As a level 42 rogue, I plowed through Misty Swamp really fast. After spending nearly an hour grinding and clearing out the area, I finally quit using my combo moves on one of them and let them put up a fight. He cast Wild Regen on himself and I let that sit for 5 seconds or so and heal him while I fought him. I finally killed him with Sinister Strike and Riposte, and he dropped the essays. So, I tend to agree with a previous poster that letting Wild Regen take effect may be part of the key -- but who knows -- maybe it was just luck.

I was getting 190-220 xp per kill, though, and considering how many I killed, I got about half a level plus the 4600 xp for turning in the quest. So, the xp IS worth the grind, plus the green drops you get over time.

Terrible quest indeed.
As a 45 rogue i grinded 25600 xp by killing those before it finally dropped from the Mire Lord. With a average 160 xp per mob its 160 mobs, and a 0.625% drop rate. So do not do this quest unless you have very good time :) But well, i got a blue and 4x the enchanting recipe

This quest took awhile for me to grind out, but it was worth it because at the back of Misty Valley, there's a cave with a Mire Lord (level 42) and a chest. In between trying to get the Dimensional Essay's, I grabbed respawned loot from the chest several times, being rewarded with many helpful items, and a few green weapons as well. Just something that made it a little more worth it.

Ok let me put an add in. I was called to help someone out. She is a level 40ish and I am a 61. I read the posts above and found that slow or fast killing did not matter. I two hit all types to include elders. I wiped the area on a circuit 4 or 5 times. Finally, I started pulling them into the water. The second Elder pulled into the water dropped. Maybe it was just the grind or maybe it was the pull into the water. Either way, that confirms the above that the Elders are the ones to drop. That Elder was about the my 8th to 10th one for the drop. It really only took about 10-15 minutes. If I was a 40ish....that would have taken longer. I even dismissed my pet to slow the killing and give them a chance to respawn. I was just managing to get a shot in before pet was killing. Not enough to there to allow the pet to have straight kills. Anyhow...not nearly as bad as I expected.

I started killing these mobs 1 bar away from lvl46 and the quest item dropped when I was 3 bars into lvl46 ... so ... quite a long grind. In the end, my bag looked like an herbalist bag ^^ Have fun

Pulled into water, grinding in Misty Swamp, let them regenerate, fought 2 at once, let them get me right down to under 10% health and mana, nothing. Nada. 42 spriest and over 50 kills. Waste of time unless you have rested XP up, and even then it makes you want to choke yourself.

Ok this really sounds weird and I almost never believe that stuff, but after reading previous comments I tried to let the Swampwalker cast his heal ( I only did melee on him) I got the item instantly, while clearing whole(!) swamp 3 times before.

I came here before I even accepted the quest and I tried everything everyone listed before I got down to the grind. Conclusion: There is no trick to this quest aside from killing 'em until it drops. Lvl 41 hunter halfway to 42, I made it 3 bars into 43 by the time it dropped. I unfortunately didn't check which one dropped it because by that time I was killing everything that moved. However, I do believe it was an Elder. The only advantage to this quest is the xp they give. Worth it if you're in that lvl range. Otherwise, probably a waste of time.

If you're an herbalist, this quest is a great opportunity to farm for blindweed. Just follow the rivers in the entire zone looking for elementals. I ended up with almost two stacks of blindweed by the time I finished the quest.

Oh, and please don't believe any of the superstition. None of it matters.

I did this quest for the achievement as well. Stupidiest quest ever.

I'm a level 70 mage, I killed the Misty Swamp elementals 6 times using my arcane spells. No drop.

I went over to the east side of Swamp of Sorrows and found a few in the water, killed with spells. No drop.

As I was riding back I ran into a random one, so I stabbed it with my weapon until it died. DROP!

Oddly enough I used this melee trick for another quest (back when I was leveling so it was too long ago to remember actually which one it was) and it dropped first one I melee'd to death.

However melee might be a bad idea for casters that are doing this at the approprate level.

Got 6 Enchant Gloves-Advanced Herbalism before i got anything saying "Khadgar's" and even then it was his whisker. Spent over 2 hours here and still not got the drop! :@ Managed to ding nearly twice aswell - UNRESTED!

Just did this as a lvl 48 (I hate abandoning quests and it was the first chance I had) - real pain and cleared twice then reread this, pulled an elder into the water and got the drop on the first kill!

One and a half clears of Misty Valley at level 73 got it for me. Also keep an eye out for The Lost Supplies quest found in random boxes in the Swamp. Killing in the water didn't help - and it's hard to pull at level 73!

It took me about 20 minutes. I actually scored the quest item off of a level 40 Tangled Horror, 10.5, 30.9 in Misty Valley. 7:53 pm eastern time.

After over 1 hour in 2 different sessions I got the thingy from a Swampwalker lvl 38 in Misty Valley.

At the time I was a lvl 40-41, shadow priest. Piece of cake but low drop rate as earlier said.

I tried the water tip, the elders and to let them regenerate. But after a while I just got rabid and killed everything I could see.

Cant see why the quest itself is importent but I just wanted to do the damn thing.

It finally dropped for me after about 45 minutes of grinding them on my level 44 Rogue.

I was in the area leveling my lockpicking at the Pool of Tears so I figured why not? It was a nice break from trying to survive in STV on my PvP server anyways. I also scored a few greens, a lot of herbs, & a level of (fully rested) XP.

the questlog says also that u can get it from a elemental called Molt Thorn but when you get to there he is there aint no elemental at all seams like it's only those Swampwalkers and the Mire Lord and the Elder Swampwalker and the Tangled Horrors that have'em

Got mine on kill number 21 from the Mire Lord in the cave, who has slightly the best drop rate. Also, there is silver in this valley, and these guys are pretty easy to drag into a group and AoE. I actually think this quest is worth the time it takes to get the book. In total, it took me about 18 minutes.

Quest still has a low drop rate, killed approximately 30 mobs in misty valley before the item dropped. As others have also stated, the quest item dropped for me as well off of an Swampwalker Elder.

Well I got this quest late and my 49 warrior didn't gain much xp but since the drop rate was going to be slow I had some fun with it and start dukeing it out with the swamp walkers raising my unarmed attack from 214 to 241. my sugesstion would be to cary a few other weapons and on quests like this try and raise your other weapon skills after all they are achievements. Maybe I look at this differently but sometimes you have to do what ever it takes to have a lil fun with a quest. At least I wasn't killed 30 times by a higher lvl horde while on this quest lol have fun.

The drop rate is absolutely horrible. I'm level 80 and doing this towards the Loremaster achievement. I one-shot the mobs, so I kill them faster than they respawn. I have been killing mobs for half an hour now or so. Now I remember why I abandoned this years ago. It's just terrible. The occasional drop of herbs is worthless at this point.

If the droprate has to be so low, they could at least increase respawn. I don't mind killing a lot of mobs, but I absolutely hate standing around waiting for them to spawn...

Got mine on the fourth kill in Misty Valley in the northwest corner of the Swamp of Sorrows. Might just have been lucky, but it looks like it is your best place to farm for it.

Got mine probably around 40 or 50 of em.
Misty Valley is the only place to get it, I killed a Tangled Horror to get it.
There's a chest there and plenty of perks if you're into alchemy/herbs.

So this quest's drop rate is still in the toilet. I am going on an hour now trying to get the quest item. I have done this quest 5 times now throughout all of my toons. I have gotten this quest item in the first 3 kills to the first 10 kills on all my toons but this one. I will update after my kill total.

Edit: Finally got it after 174 kills. I gained roughly 4.5 bubbles of xp from grinding these mobs at level 45. This quest IS NOT bugged so just hang in there!

I did this on my lv 37 mage. Most the mobs were red leveled at 40-42 but was still able to kill them. Sadly after three days of grinding these mobs (and a level) the item never did drop. So I gave up on this.

Fortunately, I was able to do this quest. I got the quest item after 20-25 mobs. But ofcourse it was only a try, i would have abandoned the quest, if it had been dropped, after a few more kill.

The drop rate on this quest is crap, but I have an interesting note. I found Molt Thorn, the rare in the area, and unbelieveably, HE dropped the item! To give it a shot, he walks around 30.3, 44.7 - that's where I found him.

I followed the instructions of the fellow adventurers of this quest and i killed tons of swamp walkers, swamp elders, etc in the nw corner of the SOS. I thought there's got to be a better way not found yet. I set out to kill the ones along the river moving along the north river heading east. It was then that i came upon the rare Molt Thorn whom dropped the item immediately. Horray!

This quest is one that could actually turn people off to WoW. I'm a patient man, but jezzuzh, I tried to complete this quest three different times - no drop. And I'm a soloing warrior fool, but this quest was even too much for me to endure.

I've finally abandoned the quest, never to look back. And, at an average of ~140 experience points for killing these extremely easy targets, it's not only boring, but a complete waste of time. A perfect example of this was the fact that I got more excited about the respawn of herbs than monsters. lol.

Well this is the quest that has finally persuaded me to join WowHead and comment. I couldn't agree more with Thorpion, this really could turn people off WoW.
I just wasted the whole afternoon doing this one quest before I finally got the drop. Cleared Misty Valley about 4 times, went right round Swamp of Sorrows filling every walking plant there, including Molt Thorn. Went from starting level 40 to almost level 41 and must have killed around 200+ mobs before it dropped.

My advice to anyone reading this, either:

a) Don't do the quest at all - unless you truly are masochistic!

b) Do it as a side quest while you run around Swamp of Sorrows doing all the other surface quests there. If the Essay hasn't dropped by the time you are finished all the rest, just give up!

I killed twenty mobs, then decided to look the quest up here, and see if it's another "black drake heart"-quest, and apparently it is. I abandoned and never looked back! :)

WOW! Patience is definitely required for this one! I must of got lucky because I got it after only 43 Kills with my 38 Mage.

I agree the drop rate is very low. It's a great quest and area for alchemists (which I am not) though.

Better pack a lunch for this one!

The quest takes for ages and some ppl will just Abandon quest but if u lvl38 to 40 its a great grinder and u get a quite bit of money it took be 83 kills but i got some hard xp and cash i would giv drop rating 10% TOOK A 1.30 HOURS!

Just completed this quest right this second thats 21.39 pm started it at 19.23pm spent over 2 hours doing it at lvl 80 so killing was not the problem however drop rate is very very poor so please be aware u will need to grind for it - i found the best place was Misty Valley - 60.52 cords.

I agree with everyone that the drop rate sucketh. I eventually got about 6 bars (no rested bonus :() of XP grinding these 38-42 mobs as a 37, dinged to 38 in the process. Eventually got the essay off a Swampwalker Elder. It took about 40 minutes or so of endless grinding, but the good news is that these elementals respawn rather quickly, they do have money loot and herb loot and there are a few herbs and mines there while you work. I leveled my herbalism up about 5 points on the goldthorn and blindweed.

The droprate for this quest is ridiculous. I finally got the drop when i had killed about 90 creatures. That's a droprate at 9%. I can only imagine how long this would have taken, if I weren't born under a lucky star.

I tried raising the weapon skill deal, went unarmed and went from 5-187, and it dropped after having cleared the area twice before regularly. Just chance perhaps that 3 people do the weapon skill and it drops?

Okay after doing like 3 other quests in Swamp of Sorrows and killing every plant beast on sight, and clearing Misty Valley fully twice, I opened WoWhead just to check if that's another of those quests "horrible drop rate, man, I cannot express how much this quest sucks balls, abandon it asap".

And I was very satisfied WoWhead provided me again a clear answer.

Yeah it is bad. It is actually THAT bad.

If you got it on first drop I guess you're born under a lucky star and baron mount dropped for you on first try as well. Before they "nerfed" him.

Just did it with my rogue lvl 80 was worried about taking a long time. Ha killed 6 guys and it got it lol

I got lucky on this one and it dropped after about 5 minutes. After reading this thread, I'm not sure if I'll be doing it again on any alts.

Was doing this for the Loremaster achievment, but I think I might leave this one until I am desparate. What a rubbish drop rate! Have already cleared the camp 3 times, plus have been killing random ones whilst travelling through the zones.

For all you lowbies - I'd keep this quest in your log, but wouldn't actively do it because it takes too long!

I remember doing this a couple of years ago on my pally. It was then as it is now: mind-numbing and tedious.

But I'm piecing together my Loremaster, so, I just wanted to get it out of the way. This toon is a 46 human frost mage. After 45 minutes, I finally got the drop. Blah.

Also got several thousand xp (rested, avg. 250-350, and the Mire Lord got me 450-ish), some coin (I hazard a guess, 1g and change), a couple of grays, and food and water. Also got:

1 Aquamarine
2 Heart of the Wild
2 Liferoot
1 Fadeleaf
1 Briarthorn

If you just want to get this out of the way, might want to just do it at a time of day that nobody's there, crank up some tunes and just settle in, because I think 45 minutes was lucky.

Horribly time consuming quest.

If you are thinking about doing this quest while working on the loremaster achievement, don't. Seriously, unless you are stuck on 699/700, this quest simply is not worth the time and boredom.

Misty Valley is the best area to kill a concentration of mobs to get Khadgar's Essays, as of May 2, 2010, the droprate is still crap, it took me three full clearings of the Valley to get this item to drop, there are about 15 mobs there my essay dropped off the Mire Lord in the cave.

If I wasn't a completionist, then I would have never completed this quest, beware of it!

I remember doing this quest on an old druid a long time ago, took me maybe two hours to get the drop. Today I walk in on my Paladin and it drops on the third kill, less than 15 seconds from entering Misty Valley.

I was all set for a long wait too. Maybe the drop-rate has finally been increased?

Wasn't too bad for me, with rested exp went halfway from 43 to 44 before I got drop. Didn't think to up my other weapon skills though D: Ah well, I'd guess I'm also really lucky there wasn't a Horde stalking the area ganking me every few seconds.

Got 1 Enchant Bracers-Advanced Herbalism Formula, Khadgar's Whisker, and Exquisite Flamberge of the Eagle while doing this. Wonder what the whisker's for...

I cleared the valley and all the elementals in the entire swamp that I could see on my hunter three times and then came here to see what was going on. As I read the comments here, the valley respawned and I thought I will do it one more time and then forget it.

Dropped the second kill after that. I feel lucky. Total kills - about 200.

After clearing the area twice I finally came here to see what I was doing wrong... As soon as I switch back over to clear the area again, 3 kills later it drops.

<3 this site. :D

Also, there's a box I found in the Misty Valley area named "Lost Supplies" that you may also take to Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands. Happy questing!

After reading all these posts I wasn't sure to do it. But I got all my balls together and try'de the quest.

5h mob and the item dropped. Maybe they changed the drop rate (?)

But .. when you've run around for an hour... and are really really mad because you don't feel like a quitter .. but are really really tired of slaying the same **** again and again.... the reward is priceless.. or more.. the feeling in your body when the ******* monster finally drops KHADGARS FREAKING ESSAY.... it's good..

i got the item from an Elder Swampwalker , the coordinates are irellevant, but i grinded in the misty thing.. with my 49 mage (reputation <3)

and ofcourse since noone else mentioned this, either because NO ONE care, or no one has discovered it yet.. (no one cares) .......... You can "/love" the "Huge Toad" and carry on with the general achievement "To All The Squirrels Who Shared My Life"..

so 250+ reputation, and 1/20'th of an achievement, i probably could've gotten about a 1000 places elsewhere... an hours work... at one point it did actually hit me, "am i a masochist?" :p

I cleared Misty Valley twice with no luck. I ventured out along the rivers and it dropped at 49.35 off of a Swampwalker. Good luck!

But I had never been to the Blasted Lands before! The journey was frightening!

When I got to the Swamp of Sorrows, I made a wrong turn and ended up surrounded by horrible plant-like swamp creatures. They lurched as if to attack me so I ran. But in my haste I dropped the essay. One of the beasts took it I am sure.

Could you please try to retrieve it and deliver it to Mahar Ba?
