This. Quest. Is. Epic.

You officially become a hero of the Horde here. You fight WITH Sylvanas and Thrall to kill Varimathras and retake the Undercity. The entire Wrath Gate quest chain is just filled with lore, and everything you do makes you feel like you are actually changing the world for once. It's absolutely fantastic, and if you have a character the appropriate level, you NEED to do this quest chain.

For Those not familiar with What this is all about this is what happens in order:

prelude: King Varian was found with amnesia by a horde gladiator and enslaved. along the way he gained his freedom and some new friends and learned the truth and gained his throne.

1. the Alliance lead by Bolvar (the guy in charge of SW while the king was away.) arrives at the Wrathgate (the Gates to Icecrown) along side the horde.
2. Sylvannas shows up with her new plague to unleash on the Scourge.
3. Varimithias and Grand Apothecary Putress Betray the Horde and Alliance and lead a rebellion.
4. Chaos Ensues, and Bolvar and Saurfang the Younger Both die in battle
5. Alextraza does her pest to clean everything up and sends you to deliver the bad news to thrall/varian.

here's where it splits based on faction
6. Horde- Thrall recieves word from you/ sylvannas who manages to escape with her life. Jaina shows up and asks for an explaination. She learns it wasn't the horde's doing but a Coup. She returns to Varian.
6.Alliance.- Varian receives word of Bolvar's death and is VERY saddened, but the words of the dragon queen remind him that not all is lost. you and jaina seek a council with the warchief. you learn the horde has lost undercity and varian prepares for war.
7. Horde: you arrive at undercity where Thrall, Sylvannas and the Kor'kron are ready for battle. Sylvannas leads the way into the royal chamber.
7. Aliiance. You speak to Broll Bearmantle and Varian leads his own attack from the Sewers.
8.Horde you meet varimithias's little pawns, and thrall and sylvannas wtf pwn them. They meet Varimithias him self and after some diaolog kill him. Varimithias's master is very disappointed (we don't know who it is but we assume it is kil'jaeden) Thrall and Sylvannas Celebrate the retaking of undercity.
8. Alliance. you meet putress's pawns and you WTF pwn them as well as you progress you can tell the horde has been here, and you finally kill putress her self. Then Varian hears Thrall's Cheering.
Now its together again:

9. Varian encounters thrall in the throne room. He insults the Horde and blames them for his enslavement and the killing of Bolvar, He charges at thrall. Jaina who stayed behind when Varian went to attack thrall shows up, and teleports the members of the alliance away.

Thrall laments his loses with Saurfang the older or Varok as Thrall calls him (his first name) Saurfang tells him what he thinks Grom would. To lead his people.

Back in Stormwind the king is met with new resolve. He thanks you and tells you to return to northrend, and to conquer it for the alliance.

thrall mentions to Saurfang, it ends like it began...and says that it looks like the tenuous peace between the horde and alliance is now Defunct.

:D now it feels like World of WAR craft again.... let the gnome punting begin

Part of the Horde questline for the Wrath Gate event. This quest line is very long and spans the entire length of Dragonblight. Quite honestly, I consider this one of the most important quest lines (thus far) in Wrath. A must-do for any hordeling. :)

In quite a few of these chains there are optional prequests. I will not list these, despite them being in the quest series list, because they are just that: Optional. I will list the LATEST quest available that will start the chain, or the one most likely to pick up while completing other parts of this chain.

Additionally, these quests are Horde Only. I, unfortunately, do not have an Alliance character on the Beta, so I do not have access to any alliance quests. Sorry!

Step names are purely flavor. They generalize what that part of the chain leads up to/is about.

I highly urge everyone to read the quest text. This quest line is quite possibly one of the most epic in Warcraft history and is highly worth the time. Lore lovers and haters alike should enjoy them.

This video really show us how much guts the horde has. Saurfang totally berzerker hero didn't even gasp at Arthas and charged, like a true hero. Damn my horde blood burns in anger and I would love to be there to scream FOR THE HORDE!

Important Question!
Is this like AQ gates, in that it happens once, thus Undercity is reclaimed, or does it occur once per character, with no bearing on the rest of the world? Once would make it more special but...I'd rather it just a super quest, which is once per character. Also, it means that more than 1 char can obtain the Leggings of Pimpster(aka Blue Leg Armour), which seem to me to be a great starter item for level 80. Would be very thankful if someone knew.

I just wanted to say that quests like these are the reason I play WoW. Lore has taken beatings on occasion in WoW, but this quest makes me believe that Warcraft will be a story to stand the test of time in popluar culture. Saurfang the younger embodies the Horde. FOR THE HORDE!

One of the reasons why I'm still playing World of Warcraft: lore and Warcraft history. Lore is what keeps me to this game, and proof of this is this quest chain. Now this is what I'm talking about. The CoT instances were okay since you get to experience the history of stuff, but in the last quest, like d3nyd had said, you actually feel like you're changing the world for once. You experience this war-heated world where everything is on peril, and playing this game hasn't felt better in beta.

Blizzard has really raised the bar with this quest line. I've never felt as important to the world as I did doing this quest. Even though I know every other level 74+ will have done it, it still means a lot. I hope they use this type of event again for other questlines, though not too many as we wouldn't want it to become repetitive.

This quest is really special with the phased versions of the Undercity and Orgrimmar and all that. But I think it still is one of the worst quests ever made. The quest chain was the best I have ever seen in the game, but this quest is just weird. This is what happened to me when I tried to do it:

I got to the undercity and accepted the quest from Vol'jin. Thrall had said that I should meet him there, but I couldn't see him anywhere. Then I noticed that there was some text in the upper part of the screen saying "The Horde is in control of the Courtyard!" and "The Horde is in control of the inner sanctum!", so I thought I should go check inside. When I get in, I get one-shotted by some elite mob and have to ress myself. When I understood thrall was near the royal quarter I tried to get there but an army of 100k hp one-shotting mobs seperated me from Thrall and I got killed. Then I got killed again by some patrol, and by then the Horde had won the battle for the Undercity and I got no credit from it and I couldn't turn in the quest. Then it reset, and the city was filled with zombies again and I instantly got slaughtered by them. I had to spirit ress to get out of there and die twice while running out, and now my armor was completely broken and I had to heartstone for repairs and I can't get back to the phased version of undercity anymore.

And I can probably never get one of the most interesting quests in WoW done.

Currently, this event can be started by someone else before you enter the instance (or phase or whatever it is). In other words, you can miss out on the fight entirely, just like Karkus! (previous post)

I joined, got the quest from Vol'jin to talk to Thrall and went looking for him. The event had already been finished by the previous player however, so he was waiting in the Throne Room. But by the time I got there, the event was resetting and the enemies were respawning. Unable to escape due to the lifts being trapped, I had to take off my gear, suicide and spirit-res... only to be instantly killed by the respawned undead in the courtyard!

Disappointing and annoying at the time, but after the event reset itself I rejoined and it was everything I'd hoped for. I spoke to a GM about it afterwards and they said the Dev's are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

So, wait for the battle to start before entering the Undercity. If someone else has already started it, you'll miss out on a lot and I recommend waiting for the reset.

This quest completely redefines the meaning of epic. There is truly nothing like it, a beautiful use of phasing to the max. In a word, this is the essence, the core of Warcraft. There's just one thing wrong: Thrall really needs to get Omen

Ok, so since some people have had confusion problems upon entering this event I just wanted to write a few pointers about specifics regarding how to actually PLAY THROUGH the event once you get going. Note that these are generic and WILL NOT give away anything regarding the actual plot play-through so reading these won't diminish the experience but help make it better.

1) THIS EVENT IS LONG (roughly 45m - 1hr) so be prepared for this.

2) If you enter and see at the top of the screen that a specific battle is underway (or do not see Thrall/Sylvanas) then just stop and WAIT next to Vol'jin. You cannot join the event once it has already begun.

Once the event ends there is 5 mins before it restarts and then 5 mins once it resets to get "checked in" so that you can participate. So if it is already underway just stop and wait for it to reset (go get a drink or something). I couldn't find anything about these times so there you go, thats how the start for this event works.

3) When a Boss Event begins DO NOT, I am going to repeat that, DO NOT take aggro on the boss right away as it spawns. Let the boss come to the NPCs and then you can begin to play. If you for some reason decide to take aggro the boss WILL 1 hit you (no exceptions).

4) If you DO GET KILLED during the event just run back in to your body and ress. You will be reset with all the effects you had while participating in the event.

I hope this helps to clear up any of the minor confusions people may have in regards to actually running/starting the event as I found it pretty confusing in the beginning. It is really an awesome event so I won't mention any of the spoilers at all. Awesome job blizz!

Okay, the quest says to talk to Thrall but...Thrall isn't here? I tried going in to UC alone, but got my ass handed to me by 3 elites.

The quest can bug out if Thrall gets fixated on an evade-bugged mob. If you see Vol'jin hanging out at the entrance, but not Thrall, the quest may be bugged on your server. Your best bet is to wait for a restart, in this case.

Kinda stupid how you don't get your own instance of this fight. I zoned in, all I had to do was walk to the end and it was completed. I didn't think to read this page because it was pretty straight forward but obviously I was wrong :P I was really looking forward to doing this quest too but ah well, at least I know for my alt.

If you want the full effect, if others are doing the quest, wait for it to reset and for Thrall to ride up, then talk to him and it will start-up after 5 minutes. That will save you fighting your way into UC on your own and getting one-shotted by the elites in there (like I did).

Like several others, the event had already started when I "phased in". I tried to catch up with Thrall inside, but kept getting killed, but then of course couldn't get out again (the lifts don't work). So I had to portal to Dalaran. But now I can't portal back to Undercity (probably) because the Mage's Quarter will be full of Scourge, and it's miles from the Royal Quarter anyway. Does anyone know whether if I take the time to catch the zeppelin from the "phased" Orgrimmar it will take to a "phased" Undercity and give me the chance to join this quest?

Remember to speak with the Warchief before storming Undercity. I learned the hard way and apparently the elevator's is only working one way. Great stuff...

The event bugged for me and started w/o me and sylvanas, if you are interested in seeing the whole event and thrall isn't at the beginning stay there or corpse hop to the the beginning through the sewer entrance and wait until the event restarts. It takes about 5 minutes to restart.

This is the best quest chain in the game. Lore on LK is back, and its awesome. Im not even a lore freak, not usually concerned with lore, but these quests MAKE you love it- Truly, in case anyone from Blizz ever reads this, Thanks- I laughed out loud, and played it like I was watching a movie unfold- a great time.

Should you arrive to this quest while the event has started (see the text on the top of the screen), wait for it to finish before taking the quest, you don't want to miss any part of this.

The event has NOT started if u:
a) Get the 5-4-3-2-1 minutes to restart message.
b) Get the 5-4-3-2-1 minutes to battle of undercity begins message.

Throughout the whole fight, your given a large amount of health (I was sitting at 46k) and a pretty much infinite healing/mana back spell is put on you. Because of this you never really die, so dont be afraid of going all out.

Just one thing, Don't Roflcharge Var, he can and did two hit me...17k armor and 46k health and all. Let Thrall get the first hit.

Not sure about how many people this affected, but while doing this quest, my pet wasn't receiving the godly buffs, and thus could not help out or even BE out at times with all of the AoE killing it. I figured it was because I have Gezzarak, one of the pets that has a few bugs with receiving buffs and effects, but another hunter was with us and his gorilla pet seemed to be dying a lot too.

Just a note for hunters doing this event to dismiss their pet to save grief. Although for boss mobs I was able to safely have my pet on the mob, growling to increase happiness (Guard Dog Talent). Just REALLY watch your pet's health! I'd just dismiss the pet, though, since you want to spend that time watching the amazing action. :D

Just in case anyone is wondering, it is possible to die : ) I died just before Varimathras and it forced me to release just after he was killed. I was able to run back to my body and turn in the quest without a problem.

wat happenes if.. after u spoke to thrall n then get a port to front of UC n once in fron of UC.. u get summoned 2 an instance.. how do i get back?.. besides porting to UC.. n getting owned by the guards n stuff controlling UC xD..

i tried talking to thrall (hoping to get another port).. but no luck on that.. does that mean i have to find another way?.. like from silvermoon flying to Sepulcher n mounting from there?.. seems.. rly rly long :(

While I was not sure what the mechanic was for separating those on the questline from everyone else, and you are there with other people btw, I decided to check it out. I rode to the zeppelin tower. While the zeppelin appeared empty, once I boarded I was able to see the NPCs and the players on it. I rode to the closest orc town. The NPC's were not there nor players, neither were there any mobs apparent. I flew to Crossroads. It was normal Corssroads with players, NPC's and mobs. When I flew back I was again in the questline environment.

Also I missed half the battle. It's possible for someone to start it while you are mucking about.

Another example of phasing in my opinion is the flight path in Nesingwary's camp. After completing two quests you are suddenly able to see the flight master, which is a flying machine you helped assemble.

Word of warning;

While your battling the mobs with your endless abilities alongside Thrall and Lady Sylvanas.. bosses will spawn.

Make sure that Thrall takes the threat immediately, or at least make sure your not near them when they aggro.
You may end up 1hit corpse running like me.

Generally Thrall will pick up the threat as soon as the bosses become targetable but they will also aggro on the closest thing to them so be careful.

Agreed: This quest is insanely epic... but also terribly executed. There's simply too many ways to get lost, lose an objective, or simply have no idea what in the world is going on due to it's terrible auto-play-even-without-you mechanics.

My girl and I started the Undercity raid part but never saw Thrall. We saw the notice at the top about the Courtyard battle etc, and went into UC only to get owned over and over again by mobs inside. After dying 4-5 times, we rezzed and figured we needed to restart the quest. So we abandoned it, only to find out Vol'jin didn't have a quest for us anymore. Neither did Thrall. And on top of that, the Zepplins were shut down because of the event so we had no way to get to Northrend besides running to Wailing Caverns and instance-hearthing. Warsong Hold didn't have the quest, so we went to Alexstrasza for the armor pick-up quest. Nothing. So we're currently a bit screwed with a GM ticket open.

Important note:
The event will reset at each 5 minutes after it ends, and be replayable from start if you didnt participate in the real action with Thrall and Sylvanas.
If you teleport in to the Undercity enterance check for situation and wait for it to end and then the reset timer will start.
Otherwise you'll get smashed oneshot by elite demon patrols (painfully experienced :b)
Same mechanics apply for the death knight starter chain's ending with Arthas' attack to Light's Hope.

Though possible, as Kil'jaeden was pushed back through a portal during the Sunwell final fight, the "Master" could also be Sargeras.

Possible, but i dont think it is Sargeras. I think it's someone, who has infiltrated factions before, to try and destroy them from within.

The Master, i think, is Deathwing.

Also, the inclusion of the black dragonflight in the Wyrmrest Temple, and the quests in 'Neltharion's Maw' (Neltharion the Earth Warder was his name before the madness brought on by the dragon soul/demon soul), kinda speaks volumes to me.

Ofc i could be way of the mark here, it's just the impression i got

Winning:

You get a huge health buff, attack buff, health and mana regen. It's pretty much impossible to fail this unless you either don't stick near Thrall, or pull agro on one of the bosses. Considering the threat that Thrall generates, you would have to do that on purpose.

Tanking and healing is pointless, just provide DPS support to help the sequence move on.

If you like seeing your AEs generate absurd numbers, now is the time to have fun.

Pets:

If you <3 your pet, or your soul shards, leave them in Orgrimmar. They do not get the buff, and thus are very vulnerable to the massive amount of AEs thrown around.

Wrath Gate:

The Wrath Gate stays changed with Alexstrasza and Korialstraz at it after the quest is completed. You can always go back to relive the cutscene by talking to her if you so wish. Also: just to gawk at how damn big she is.

You might want to add a note to your excellent guide to this quest chain that after completing The Forsaken Blight, one must FIRST go and see Agmar in the keep - He sends you on to see Saurfang the Younger and then you get your nice blue boots and start the next part of the quest chain.

It wasn't obvious to me, and though it might be to some, I've heard others with similar confusion. A very small oversight in an otherwise excellent guide :)

I went back and ran around a bit and found an exclation mark... took the quest, then went back and it worked. I had panicked a bit thinking I had forgotten something far more crucial.

Let's hope we get some more of these quest lines in Cataclysm - I would really like to do the Hilt quest line for the lore, as I understand it it's a great deal of fun, but I haven't gotten the drop and I won't/can't pay 9k gold for it - not sure I'd be able to pass up the 9k gold it sells for even if I did win it. I do wish that Blizzard would make all epic quest chains accessible to anyone who wishes to do them, such as this one - The Wrath Gate - rather than those lucky enough to obtain a hilt AND rich enough to keep it in order to enjoy the lore (and for the weapon I guess).

A level 251 weapon isn't worth 9k for the vast majority of players. If they're serious raiders, there is better out there, and if they are casual, they are less likely to have that amount of gold to spend on one item. I know that many will say that 10k isn't much gold at all, but for the majority of players, it is indeed a large sum that takes time to accumulate, for some, who enjoy playing but work, have families, and spend free time doing a variety of things - including WoW - it could take a very long time indeed to collect that much gold.

The point shouldn't be the gold - the lore, the quests, should be available to anyone - perhaps with some other minor reward if they don't have the hilt, or make the hilt itself available as the reward for a long, complex, lore-intensive quest chain rather than an extra reward for those who choose to either play many, many hours, or who happen to be skilled at using the auction house - I can do that, but that isn't fun for me - I think that while there are some who find fun in playing the AH, most others would rather be questing or raiding or levelling a new alt or otherwise "out there" rather than buying and selling (there are some who find this to be their source of most fun in the game, and no disrespect intended to them) that is, as long as they don't get too greedy and upset their server's economy.

Just an FYI... if you are standing outside Undercity and get your quest from the Troll... wait for Thrall to show up.

I showed up in the middle of the event and didn't realize I needed to wait for Thrall. I ended up going into the UC and getting my butt kicked.

After a while, the text in the middle of your screen will tell you it has 5 minutes to the reset of the event. So if you don't see Thrall when you arrive, you need to stand around for 5-10 minutes for the event to reset.

this entire chain was actually doable at lvl 71. I wouldn't recommend it to do it at 71, except maybe a DK (Blood presence+690% dmg modifier=huge heals)

wouldnt say its the most boring quest ive played to date but its close... i mean u cant possibly die and it takes half an hour or so u can allmost watch a movie before its done and u wouldnt even die..

i still remember the hunter quest for Rhok'delar, Longbow of the Ancient Keepers. that atleast required a little bit of skills ....

This was an AWESOME quest line, did it with 74 lock... few tips:
1. Wait outside UC for event to re-start... Thrall shows up, talk to him and it's on (don't try to catch up, don't think you can... I couldn't anyway)
2. Let them (Thrall, et al) get aggro... you can steal agro and you will die
3. Follow the lead of Thrall, when the mobs come... AOE, I used hellfire... you will stayed healed
4. If you are into screenshots, make sure you get one BEFORE you turn in quest, if you turn it in... too late
5. Don't worry about pet or minion, you really don't need it
6. Enjoy the line... truly worth it, just for the ammusment... the reward was not as good as the epic I had from pre-WotLK, but line was fun none the less

Basically the best advice I can offer after having assumed the quest was finished after the first boss kill (I dont have a good enough memory to recall all of the lore - names and such beyond the main characters - and even then I tend to forget the story), is to follow Thrall and Lady Sylvanas. After accepting the quest, you will find a horde flag on your head, and you will see that your health has just become MUCH larger (about 40k).
The first thing you will do is amass with the other 'troops'(NPC's) and players outside the main entrance to Undercity. Then you will be led into battle in the courtyard, with wave after wave of elite mobs, followed by a boss (a giant or an elemental of some kind). During the battle you will do insane damage and will be kept topped up on health and mana (if you are a mana user), so death does not appear to be truly feasible. Thrall tanks the bosses and his other troops hold aggro everywhere else, so I found I could just wail on whatever was closest to me (enh shammy).

Once the battle for the courtyard is complete, WAIT for Thrall to speak, then follow him into the center of undercity, with a few skirmishes along the way. I messed up here the first time. I did not wait for thrall (I thought we were done), and ran back outside the gates. No more flag on my head, no more insane health. I quickly became clear to me that the quest was not over (it didn't show as complete in my log) and I could not interact with the quest giver. So I ran back in. The courtyard was "held" by horde, so I ran into the main part of the city. I followed the red horde banners. By the time I got to the center (by the bank), several elite mobs were patrolling and I died (quickly). I rezzed at the spirit healer (in the CY) and waited my time. Ran back in to find that the courtyard was full of mobs again and I (again) got killed. Eventually, everything reset and I was able to run it again.

Anywhoo, The final battle occurs in the canals against a HUGE (what appears to be) Demon and his/her minions. When all is done, you can turn the quest into Thrall and portal back.

GREAT quest!

OK that was mind blowing.

Warning: I got one-shotted by one of the bosses of one of the fights, so it pays to stand back a little and not go straight into the fight. I'm a lock so was soulstoned, but still it would have sucked if I had spent that much time on the quest only to fail it. The quest takes 30 MINUTES, so you got to have some time for this one. It really is the most epic event in the game I've ever seen.

Makes the game actually intriguing enough to keep coughing up more cash each month.

You can skill raise you weapon skill during this quest. It's a great time to get that unarmed skill all the way up to 400.

Because nobody has mentioned this (that I have seen in browsing the comments), if you show up and thrall isn't there, check the World PVP Objectives setting in your Interface options. With it off, you can't tell what part the event is on.

For the full (and best) experience you will want to wait until the event resets.

Wouldn't it be confusing for Alliance if one of your members of the raid if you choose to invade Undercty of course, and they haven't done the quest? As they can still see Varimathras meaning that your whole raid will be fighting Sylvanas when the member who hasn't done the quest is getting killing by a Varimathras unseeable and untargettable by the raid?

This quest bugged on me. Took inner sanctum, then Thrall and Sylvannas were essentially stuck. If a mob came by, they'd move to kill it, then revert to their position. Eventually I hearthed. Later, w/o thinking, I took the portal to UC. Insta-dead. Still phased, and creatures there. To get my corpse I died again. Eventually was able to res in water safely.

Do not abandon quest! I did that, thinking it would remove me from that city's "phase." It doesn't.

I should have tried porting to Ogrimmar to see if the port there to UC was still there. But, I went to UC again. Eventually died and spirit res'd. Then I was outside and able to pick up the quest again. Finished it after a server reset.

The quest is epic. The rewards are not however, for those less inclined to care about lore.

This is a level 74 quest (and you'll likely be 75-76 before you do it), yet there are cheap created lvl75-76 pants that are upto 20 iLvls over any of these.

But who would do the quest for the blue gear rewards :p

quite easily the BEST quest ever! just finished it with my mage and loved evry secnd of it!
the only thing i will warn people about is dont make the same mistake me an my guildie made an fall down the lift before sylvanas gives u the buff - quite a hairy few minutes !

I went to phased UC alone (without Thrall or Sylvanas)
and when I get to Sylvanas' chamber Saurfang and the crew were already there and they had done all the killing and I was just able to turn the quest in. /cry

Great quest and great writeups, but a few details about the mechanics and a less than stellar run by yours truly. Your pet will die. Just dismiss it before you start. You can basically tag along and just watch, if you like. You won't gain weapon skill, so don't bother (I thought it would be a perfect time to raise my unarmed (160) but it never budged.

The first time I attempted this quest, I died because I wandered off too far from Thrall and group. By the time I got back and rez'd, they were far from where I'd died so I had to hearth. When you rez - you'll mostly likely die unless you can make it safely into the canal and time your run into the royal chamber - perhaps classes with stealth might be ok. Take the zepplin and restart if you have to hearth - if you port there, you're very likely to die. Have fun and enjoy this quest.

If you find that you joined the scene after the fight is already over/almost over. You can just wait outside until the timer resets and do it from the start. It will not boot you from the scene

Glad for the lore, but I think this could have used more meaningful interaction for the player.

As my previous comment was purged I can only assume MOST folks like to stand around watching NPCs fight.

I hope they bring this back as a COT instance and actually allow the player to have some sense of having contributed to this battle, as it is it is just a glorified cinematic.

Would have been nice if it had some lasting consequences for org/undercity as well, clearly it wouldn't have been cool to leave undercity abandoned and org under martial law, but a greater representation of undead in undercity (refugees rarely all go home) and some ongoing rebuilding effort in undercity would have made it far more real.

I'm a bit !@#$ off, I was stuck in this quest no buff and dying till your gears is 0 durability. There are no NPC to repair and whatsoever. This is stupid.

If there is a way to screw up a quest (especially one as epic as this one), I usually will find it. When I ported to UC, apparently, the battle had already started. So, I jumped down the elevator shaft and all was good for a few minutes. I was doing epic damage and taking massive hits and getting healed by the song of Sylvannas. As I was making my way toward the battle, I quit being healed and noticed my health was normal, not epic (very bad sign). Then it says on the screen the battle is over. Problem is, all the baddies were after me and with the elevator destroyed, there's no way out. I figured I need to drop the quest and it would port me out so I could begin again. Wrong! The only way to get out of there is to die and rez at the spirit healer. Another problem, now my gear is utterly destroyed. Okay no problem, I'll ride into Brill and get repairs. The place is a ghost town (no pun intended). So I hit my hearth which was luckily not UC or Ogrimmar. I got my repairs in Dalaran and hit the portal back to Orgrimmar thinking i could get a portal back to the "outside" of UC as I did before. No portal, but here I am in this still alternate Ogrimmar, so I take the Zep back to Brill and this time after getting the quest again, I wait like I should.

Important note: After you see the epic cut scene and go to Ogrimmar, you will be trapped in this alternate phase until you complete this quest.

This quest is much like the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel in the Death Knight chain. You are buffed beyond belief (although you can still die from the bosses, as I found out twice when they decided to aggro me instead of Thrall), you will see some HUGE crits from your toon. This quest along with other phasing quests are a great addition to WoW. I have never had so much fun doing a quest before.

I would recommend anyone doing this quest to take some time and take in all of the lore present in this chain.

Now I'm off to watch the wrathgate cinematic again =)

Note that this is a great opurtunity to level up your hand to hand (or other weapon skills your low in) skill its verry hard if not imposible to die here. Just unequip your weapons and kill everyone with your fists. i got from 200 to 360 quickly during this quest.

Awesome place for leveling your weapon skills. Since you practically never die, it's easy mode for leveling. Especially on bosses, just click attack, and let the points flow in.

While you are doing the quest, the following buffs will be cast upon you:

Warchief's Blessing (Thrall's buff)

All damage done increased by 500%
25% of your health regenerated every second
Health increased by 30000

Note that the damage buff adds 500% damage to your attacks, so you will be doing 6 times more damage than usual.

Song of Sylvanas (Sylvanas' buff)

When I accepted the request I stoood next to thrall for half an hour. No question mark was over his head. However, I was bored and right clicked and he asked me if I was ready to begin! It was then that the 5 minute timer started.

And yes, you CAN die in there. I followed Thrall and in the courtyard a boss hit me for all it was worth. A 1 hit. I rezzed, returned to battle, and I completed the quest.

After 10 minutes I was bored (holy priest), so I put my weapons away and got my "unarmed combat" to 80% of it's max! It was a lot more fun that way.

The xp was small, the reward not that great, but I am a questaholic, so I did it anyhow.

When I did this quest I took the opportunity to level my weapon skills from 1-360. What better place to do so. Just as long as you stay with your NPC Friends.

MASSIVELY overrated quest line, everyone seems to think it's the bee's knees but really all it is is a poorly made FMV (in-game graphics, not the *good* renders used in the intro for the game) and a 40 minute battle with "god mode" buffs that prevent you from dying unless you get one-shotted.

The battle seems to drag on forever and is no challenge at all, at the end it just *ends* the plot of the line isn't tied up nicely, of the two 'big-bads' you kill one and then bang - you're teleported to Orgrimmar without even knowing what happened.

You get about 40k exp sure, But you could get a *lot more* doing other quests. Also the rewards are actually not that great and likely to be replaced in ~2 levels.
In short, If you're a lore freak you'll get a hard on for the first few dialogs then get left high and dry and if your a min/maxer trying to hit 80 asap you'll be &*!@ed off that it took so long and got you nowhere.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but this has to be one of the most over-hyped quests ever and I was disappointed to say the least!

On a side note, during the 5 minute wait outside UC I couldn't help but notice that the horde are bombarding the city with catapults? isn't that somewhat counter-productive if they are indeed trying to take back the city to live in themselves?

Here's a few tips

1) If you die, I think that maybe the buff stability is affected...so try not to attract aggro from the bosses before Thrall starts poking them.

2) Again on the buffs, stay near the group so you don't, you know, die. I think they wear off if you go too far.

3) Enjoy the fight. Unless you attract aggro before Thrall on bosses, you're pretty much a juggernaut. You can use those ultra-mana-consuming spell combos you've always wanted to use, or go all out crazy with high cost spells. Pay attention to the conversations, the whole thing is pretty epic.

I have to disagree. If you love the Lore aspect of WoW, this quest delivers. The cinematic lets you know that Arthas is fat, and the battle itself is a very unique event. Additionally, this quest doesn't take up much time, because the quests you have to do to reach the speak-tos before it are quests you would probably do anyways (Before learning what quests I needed to do, I had already done all but one chain).

So if you're powerlevelling, you can save it for later, but it's worth taking off 50 minutes of your time to do an extra chain.

Here is what you should do if you, like me, messed up the first time, and went into UC when the battle had already started, thus being stuck down there with elites and no buff, or at least this is what I did that worked. Maybe you don't need to do some of it, such as abandon quest, but I did just to be safe.

1) Hearth out (mine was conveniently set to Dalaran).

2) Abandon quest.

3) Then I Dalaran portal'd to Orgrimmar.

4) Took zeppelin to UC. If you, like me, do not remember which is to Undercity, do not fret. Stand on the zeppelin for a few seconds, and the NPCs will phase in, allowing you to talk to them to see where the zeppelin is going. The one to Grom'gol said Grom'gol, and the one to Undercity talked about crashing into a forest.

5) Stood by Vol'jin with the ! over his head for ~20 minutes while the battle finished without me. I kept the game alt tabbed so I wouldn't read/see spoilers if they happened to appear on chat. It takes quite a while for the event to finish, and then there is a 5 minute countdown to the event resetting.

6) After the 5 minute countdown to reset ends, Thrall and Sylvannas appear out of the Orgrimmar portals behind Vol'jin.

7) Accept quest from Vol'jin.

8) Tell Thrall you are ready to begin.

9) A 5 minute countdown to begin the event begins.

10) Keep up with the battle, and finish. Not too big a deal, just annoying and wasted a bit of time. You are still able to complete it as normal though.

Some more tips:

1) Be careful that you are following Thrall. When I did it for the second time after sitting around waiting for half an hour, I was only half paying attention because my dog was accosting my roommate, and some grunts decided to patrol the wrong way. I followed them, lost the buff, and died right before going into the Royal Quarter (ie the last 1/3 of the event).

2) Careful with AOE. I died the third time to the first boss because I guess I Volley'd him before Thrall touched him.

3) Don't fall down the elevator until Thrall says you can.

4) Look at Sylvanas when she is battling in the canals/inner sanctum attacking dreadlords--kind of looks like she is going Yunero and Omnislashing them or something. Pretty neat.

5) When you are about to fight Varithmas, stand behind Thrall/Sylvanas or else you will aggro and die. Also, he has a knockback skill, which is kind of annoying, so stand with your back close to a wall.

To guys like Varian, he looks at this instance like “Hey, what did you think was going to happen? These guys are evil scum. Of course they dropped the plague on top of everybody.” So it doesn’t help Varian’s view of the Horde. Even though you can likely prove that the orcs had nothing to do with it, Thrall didn’t rubberstamp this event, but it just goes to show that the Horde is a very dangerous assortment of savage races. As seen through the eyes of Varian, “Hey Thrall, if you can’t keep control of all these bruisers, then I’m going to do something about it.”

the buff of sylvannas increases mana regen, so plp can spam skills wihtout worries, but what about rage/energy/rune power? the buff increases regen of those too?

I ask cause I have a DK, my brother has a warrior, and my best friend has a rogue, and all 3 of us wanna spam our AOE skills when we get to this quest, It'd be a shame if while all the mages/warlocks/priests/paladins/hunters/druids/shamans spammed their AOE skills with that endless mana regen, we Death Knights, Warriors and Rogues were left behind.

The Master can't be Sargeras as he is in a constant state of limbo after being purged from Medivh's body and without a body powerful enough to sustain himself. So most likely, it is Kil'jaedan, it was his backup plan if the Sunwell failed. Or maybe... it was the original plan for the third invasion. It took about 7 years to get ready to start those portals in Undercity (considering if it started around the end of WC3: TFT). It took probably months to make a portal out of the Sunwell. Undercity (probably underneath a ley line, giving it some magical energy) isn't a fount of power like the Sunwell. Maybe when Kael allied with the Legion, Kil'jaedan was like "yeah this will be the new plan, guys." That's my theory.

Very neatly put for thoose who think the master was a reference to Sargeras, and for some posts above saying Burning Legion units were being summoned.. So you think Kil'Jaedan isn't a part of the Burning Legion? He's the leader for god sake.

About the new plan you take up at the end of the post, Kil'Jaedan is one if not the most cunning creature in the universe (as we've so far gotten to explore) he is said through lore to have a memory beyond lifetime and he plans not within years but millenias, a problem such as the sunwell is but a small obstacle in his scheme, for he certainly have beyond counting "back-up" plans, may it be within one or a 1000 years from now.

Also to add about Kil'Jaedan is that he, unlike most ranking officers in the legion, is forgiving. One can make up for ones misstakes and be forgiven, which I feelt when Varimathras said "A thousand-thousand pardons, Master! I will deal with these intruders myself!". A dreadlord such as Varimathras could have easily escaped, but the fear of desserting his master and the incoming wrath held him back, knowing that if he made it up to him, he would be forgiven.

Ohh, how I long for the day that Kil'Jaedan gets his revenge with Velen.

Anyway since I'm not really adding to subject I'll stop here, and remember some things I say here are speculations.

this was awesome...when i first got ported to Orgimmar, i knew i was in a alt realm cause there were people walking and no other players...

i died like 2x...aggro'd the second boss lol...when i rez'd, i died right away...so when i rez'd again, i bubbbled myself...

after it was all done, i got teleported to the zep landing in Org...i didnt know what to do so i visited Thrall and stuff...nothing.

as for not being able to do Varimathras's quests no more after this...that sucks, cause i didnt do any of them :(

all in all, this was the best thing i've done in WoW so far.

Some things I noted while doing this quest (Horde side):

If you're a hunter or a warlock, be sure to dismount BEFORE the Battle for Undercity begins. If you're still mounted when Thrall and Sylvanas cast their buffs, your pet WON'T GET THE BUFF and will likely die in the first ten seconds of fighting. Thrall and Sylvanas won't cast their buffs again for the entire duration of the battle, so revive/summon your pet again will be useless.
The Troll leader won't take part in the battle.
Sylvanas randomly draws aggro from Thrall. You will see Thrall chasing mobs around like you're in one of those pugs we are sadly used to.
You are, as a matter of fact, immortal. You can't die unless you really try to and your help isn't necessary after all, you can just sit back and enjoy the battle or take part in it. I fought the whole way to Varimathras and ended with more than 6 millions dmg done (lvl 75 survival hunter). If you draw aggro, Thrall will run towards the mobs and take them away.
If you started the quest in Warsong Hold DON'T go to Undercity until you finished the chain, or you'll be raped by dozens of angry lvl 75 elite undeads. Same thing for Orgrimmar: the city will be safe, but empty of all vendors and trainers. Zeppelins will still be available both from and to UC and Org.
In the end of the quest, when Varian Wrynn charges Thrall, you can throw a couple of shots at the king of Stormwind before Jaina teleports him away. Doing so will flag you pvp as you've attacked any other alliance guard.
As soon as you turn in the quest in the UC throne room, you'll be teleported without any warning outside Orgrimmar, on the ramp of the Borean Tundra Zeppelin.
Yes, the reward pretty sucks for a lvl 75 hunter, as the legs you get from the Violet Hold quest are way better. Anyway, the trinket is a useful pvp/solo item.

What NOT to do:

Go running in after you get the quest. you will die. Talk to Thrall, then help him kill everything he goes after. Takes about 40 minutes. Might seem like a long time, but worth the rewards.
Also, do NOT drop the quest and try to go to Dalran to the port to Undercity, you will die again, and have a huge repair bill.
Do NOT think there is a repair guy near by...cause the town of Brill is vacant. You have to go to the next closest town up the road in Silver Pine Forest area.
All in all this is a nice quest.

Wowhead does not list the amount of experience this quest gives as of this comment. You get a total of 41,500 experience upon the completion of this quest. This is double the amount of a normal quest, so it is a nice benefit along with nice leggings. Click for screenshot.

Very unimpressed that this quests means Varimathras will no longer be in the Undercity for you when you have completed it! There was no kind of warning, and those like me who are going for the Loremaster/Seeker achievements may find themselves locked out of several quests, with no possible way of completing the chains.

This strikes me as incredibly poor planning from the quest design team. Personally I am extremely annoyed at this, especially if it means I am no longer able to complete these achievements (I have been working on them for weeks!).

This questline was just awesome, the cinematic and the final battle, as well as the phasing was just pure gold. I'm not a massive lore fan, but really enjoyed this whole questline.

Edit: Seems "reply" isn't working and my comment hasn't gone under the original sub-thread that it should have. My reply is in relation to the phasing sub-threads further up the page.

This may already be common knowledge, but....

If you have already completed a quest which uses this phasing mechanic, and then group with someone (to help them out) and help them with the quest it can cause havoc/confusion with group members. Certain group members on different phases/timelines will not be visible to others - neither will mobs from each distinct set of phases.

A good example of this is the Shadow Vault in Icecrown. Until a player has completed the chain to liberate it then all they'll see is that it's full of scourge mobs. After liberating it, they'll see the Ebon Blade there. Anyone grouped with them who hasn't completed the liberation chain will see the scourge occupied one - regardless of the fact the other member, in the same group, will see the Ebon version!

So if your group members suddenly vanish or can't see mobs you're talking about, it could be that you're on different phases/timelines.

Since 3.1, they have blocked off the other paths in Undercity. Only the way the "Heroes" go is open. This means if you die, it's easy to find your way back.

I just took toon #5 through the quest .. enjoyed it just as much as the first time ... but I can confirm, with both horde and allli toons, that you are at risk of death. I stayed behind/beside the leaders, didn't take the first shot, etc., but still died on 3 of my 5 toons. Aspect of Monkey or other dodge options may have helped on the other two, but it appears that if you get the (bad) luck of the draw and receive multiple large hits, close together, you'll be making that run from the graveyard. If you're on an alli and unfamiliar with UC layout, consider walking the Sewer --> Royal Quarter route in advance on a horde toon, so that, if killed, you don't get lost and miss the action.

Protip: If you're looking to level weapon skills but don't have very good weapons to do so with, light this place up with any weapon. I added +200 skill to axes and +100 to unarmed, and I realized this about halfway through the damn quest.

Did anyone catch the DotA reference? DotA is the most popular custom WC3 game online. The abominations in this mission like to grab you with their hook and pull you in. Hmmm... Meat hook? Pudge was my favorite hero.

Not quite true, i happen to die at the final boss, as i wanted to see where the voice came from that boss lost its last portal and started to attack. Sadly, i was first target, insta kill, proving u can die :D

So ran back to my corpse and regained both buffs so i could wack the remaining out of that boss.

I was pretty dissapointed on the reward, specialy for a prot paladin even the pants have no true value compared to the def/sta quest rewards you get prior this chain.

But, and i know its within the lore, it sadden me the most that bloodelfs have NO story in this whole thing whatsoever. For as far i know they are still 'ally' of the forsaken, sylvanas being former bloodelf, why they never did anything in this whole freaking story? Then again, nearly whole WotLK has little true value for a bloodelf, i gues mostly as they had a huge role already in TBC, kinda the same for trolls.

I will say this is a brilliant opportunity to skill up weapons! I bought one of every weapon I could weild (as a Hunter that is quite a lot), and just found myself a lone enemy to hit at (I'm skilling up unarmed and axe as I write this). When one weapon is at 400, I swap for next weapon. This is possible because the buffs makes me immortal :)

Hate this. Two times in a row I just ran into UC at the end of someone else's event and completed it without having done a single thing.

Also, all the leggings are terrible, and the trinket is terrible.

Unless you're prepared to wait for this to get perfectly set up for you and are really into lore, this quest sucks. Not to say it isn't worth it for the Exp, which is extremely good, but in terms of design I think people praise this quest way too much.

Between the wrathgate video constantly crashing my system (a brand new laptop), joining a half-way finished battle and not realizing there was *1* person already going through it (i missed the courtyard and the singing), getting one-shotted by the big boss in outter ring for 60k, and having turning in the quest to thrall abruptly shooting me out of the room before i read what everyone else had to say.. I really hate how badly the most epic part of this game is so poorly controlled.

One thing I loved about this quest (Apart from the epiccness of the whole chain), is that it also brings out some of the Warcraft 3 Nostalgia. Thrall yells upons his attacks "FOR DOOMHAMMER", Slyvanas yells "May my aim be true", and Jaina yells "You asked for it" and "I hate resorting to violence".

The first time you do this quest, it's very epic. Maybe the next couple, but it does get old (and long). If you find yourself down below and the quest hasn't started, just go out the back entrance. Or, do what I did on my second character. Start the script, go in the back entrance, and fish. Easy way to skillup while you can't do much else.

Alternatively, this is also a great time to skill up those pesky weapon scores. Unarmed is always a nice one to max out here.

Axtully those who say you are immortal you can actully die, yes you get a major beef up from Thrall and Sylvanas but if you have too many adds on you, it is possible for you to be owned. (Tested on priest, rouge, and death knight and each class was able to be killed.)

Just finished this on my Hunter at lvl 72, and I must say the pants were a substantial upgrade over my frostscales I was using.

I think it would be more fun though with a mage or warlock that could just constantly rain down the pain. As is, I spent most of the mission spamming Volley.

There is a little bit of extra dialogue at the end, after Thrall nods. Thrall says something like "I'm sorry about your boy" to Saurfang. I then handed the quest in and was teleported away so I didn't get to see the rest

If you a have weapon you need to skill up on, this is the place to do it. You're virtually in god-mode. Against Varimathras, I skilled up from 220-300 in that one fight alone.

Yea... I was a bit confused there as well thinking 'Huh? Sylvannas just betrayed Thrall?' and was assuming she was about to get a major butt whooping from the Warchief (or worse yet, Saurfang). However, after seeing her kneeling in front of Thrall, presumably begging for his forgiveness for the betrayal that has befallen them, things had cleared up (a little).

The reason that Arthas would have thought it was Sylvannas automatically (and not just because of Putress' lovely speech about the Forsaken before the attack) was because Azeroth's populace is created with the medieval 'Master and Servant' mind set where you answer for what is yours. Your minions are extensions of your power and are merely your tools to do your bidding. A high ranking official in Sylvannas' Royal Apothecary Society such as Putress, laying such an insulting blow on your people is pretty much an insult by the Dark Lady herself by extension. And not a long extension in Putress and Varimatrhas' case since Varimathras was directly under her (And Putress wasn't that far down the ladder either).

The fascinating thing here is, if one of your underlings' two minions betrayed your faction, you, if you were Thrall would be in full right to lay the killing blow on Sylvannas without asking questions. It would be she who was supposed to answer for Putress and Varimathras' doing (especially after all the mention of her 'orders' in low level quests leading up to this). But Thrall doesn't... instead he listens to her as she kneels before him and helps her take her city back. Truly a good leader, proving once again he cares about his people. He's byfar my favorite character ingame. If I were a leader in Azeroth, I'd throw my entire race's support behind him any day of the week. Srs.

On another note, judging by previous encounters with both leaders of the factions, if King Varian was in Thrall's position the Forsaken would most likely be looking for a new leader right bout now. He seems a lot more prone to rash decision making... perfect example in this quest.

Ever since they made it impossible to level weapon skills on immune mobs, this quest has become by far the best way to get weapon skills up, especially if you play a non-melee class and can't take the pain dished out by normal mobs.

Just make sure you have Thrall's buff (Sylvanas' buff has a shorter range and will likely disappear), head out to the outer rings and just start hitting stuff. If you lose the buff, Thrall will periodically re-cast it, as long as you stick close to him for a bit. Sylvanas' buff can be re-applied by going a ways out of range of her and then coming back close.

If you don't mind being unable to use Org and UC for a while, leave the quest open until 80, bring some junky low-level weapons and a good book to read. :) Be warned, though-- If you disconnect, you won't have Thrall's buff when you log back in, and you'll have to chase him down at whatever step he's on (including re-starting the event if it's already been finished, waiting for the buff and the elevator to be cleared, etc.) If the event isn't running, it means dying and spirit rezzing to begin it, so leave the armor at home in the bank since you won't need it anyways. You can continue killing things after the event has reset as long as you don't disconnect or leave, so the ideal thing is to go find something around the outer ring that the horde forces and leaders aren't killing.

If you need to leave, you'll have to hearth or portal out. Coming back to resume the event later, go to Org and take the zepp to UC.. Do NOT take the portal from Dala/Shat to UC, since you'll teleport into a pack of mobs with no super regen uber buff. It's worth mentioning that other than the elevator thing (which you can bypass with a slowfall), you don't need to wait for any part of the event to go fight things once you have Thrall's buff.

Wierd how the Arathi Basin PvP ground's description still says Varimathras is watching over it or something like that. By description, I mean the paragraph under the queues when you talk to battlemasters. It might be because I havent dont this quest on my 68 shaman yet though.

If your helping someone who has "harthed" or interrupted this quest halfway through (ie. has no toons in org or gets dead when portaling to undercity here's the steps :

A : find a way to get inside the undercity (either by mage portal, or dalran/shatt portal)
B : Die by mobs
C: res at spirit healer, run out of undercity, abandon any quest relating to "the battle for the undercity" go outside and get the quest thats waiting for you.
D: wait for the quest to start
E: DO THE QUEST FULLY!
F: The undercity and org return to normal
G: dont be so retarded again.

It seems that with the latest patch, the dialogue is now voice acted, apparently because they finally got someone to play the part of Sylvanas who had her voice changed in this patch also. At least I can't remember it was the last time I did it, but just finished it again (3rd time now for me) and there it was, every character that spoke, did actually speak.

The reason I ask is, I like to plan it so I hit max level turning in particularly epic quests, but if this awards no XP...that's probably not gonna work :/

annoying. i port in to undercity... thrall's not there, sylvanas is not there. i get the uber buff.

i proceed to hack my way down to the royal quarters, and while i do i get a message saying that the horde now controls undercity. yipee.. i keep hacking my way down. suddenly a message pops up saying that the enemy controls undercity. i get to the royal quarters and there's nothing there. i make my way out of the sewers to reset, slogging through trash. the moment i exit the sewers, i lose my uber buff. get one shotted by an abomination.

i respawn, run to the sewers to rez, run back to vol jin. now thrall and sylvanas are there, but i get no buff. die countless times trying to run after thrall and sylvanas.

Do not go down the elevator alone!

I came in and the event was not running or bugged, and went down the elevator without thrall. You'll have to spirit rez. I've had a huge amount of trouble with this questline, it would have really enjoyed it had it been properly beta tested. It's a real shame.

Here's the best (worst?) part of fulfilling this quest: You don't ever have to remove your weapons from their holsters. You can keep your hands (hooves?) in your pockets. You can <yawn> go to sleep while Thrall and Sylvanas are cleanin' up. All you have to do is wake your 'toon when that particular battle is finished and the duo moves on to the next stage. All you have to do is follow them around - stick close by - and when everyone is dead (with the exception of T and S), your character becomes a hero! :D

These phased events really screw up the game. Having said that, one must use the phasing to max advantage and being able to walk through horde cities was pretty nice. Therefore, my toon stopped just before this quest many months ago (on the recommendation of the Ogrimar fishing achievement) and have been phased ever since. Even received the War Bear for raiding all the Horde cities without firing a single shot (see how phasing screws up the game?).

However, the Hallow's End PvP quest and achievement cannot be completed phased, so my toon was forced to complete the chain and this last quest. Simply followed the King, occasionally throwing-in small heals to ensure a position on the threat list and successful completion of the quest.

These phased events are really a pain and one can only hope Blizz limits their use in the future. What I wouldn't give for my leather worker have a pre-phased Alliance Vanguard...

As you are invincible during this quest, and your damage doesn't count at all, you can level up your weapon skill during it. I don't think it affects time of event, so no time is lost.
While I was leveling my warrior in arms spec, with two-handed sword, I boosted my one-handed sword skill to the max in phased Undercity. Remember to take fast weapon, and stack as much haste as you can!

Is waiting 5 minutes before the quest starts for literally NOTHING supposed to be fun?

Is fighting LITERALLY the same exact wave of mobs for 5 minutes at a time non stop supposed to be fun?

If you're like me and have done this quest 10+ times and are just doing this for the blue and the exp the boss type mobs are great for leveling weapon skill. I went from 50 or so thrown to 375 by time I was done.

Am i the only one who thinks Sylvanas has framed the Horde?I find her too witty to just be blind to what the apothecary society was doying, better yet let her guard down to Varimathras whom she enslaved and forced to kill his demonic bretheren.
Forsaken never were the loyal and honorable Horde witch is merely a means to an end for them,Sylvanas probably pretended not to know of the plot Varimathras and Putress cooked up witch could not have been better for her goals and the Forsaken as whole.
However the attack failed and she quickly went to Thrall to attempt to regain control of the situation since the last thing she wants is the Horde as an enemy, at least not just yet...,also strangely Varimathras mentions nothing of her during the entire event.,clearly he would have a great grudge over her. Anyway i couldnt save my UD shadowpriest an evil grin every time Sylvanas shouted cheesy stuff like "they shall be punished !'"Thoughts on the matter would be appreciated, but then again it might be just me digging too deep...

And question can you do it after 3.3 because all the guards in UC on my 16 War are Kor'Kon and not guardians and varimithras is replaced along with putress? just wondering cause this was my favorite quest on my DK

If you're doing this quest for the 6th time like I was, you can run ahead to the Royal Quarters and afk until they make it there. As a clothie I died twice, once falling down the elevator and once near the Royal Quarters when I had about 100 mobs on me, at that level repair bills are negligible anyway. You will keep Thralls healing buff but lose Sylvanas speed buff.

Sylvanas herself doesn't hate "all living things." The Apothecary does. Sylvanas highly resents humans in general, yes, likely because it seems to be an elf thing to resent humans and also the amount of difficulty she's been having with Humans in Tirisfal (Scarlet Crusade). She's cold and merciless, yes, but globally genocidal? Far from it, I think. I don't believe she's ever shown any sort of hatred toward anything other than Humans and Scourge, at least not on a racial level.

I also get the feeling that while she only joined the Horde out of convenience, eventually working with the living again has brought a tiny bit of her humanity (elfity?) back, and she is considerably more loyal to the Horde than when she first joined. The amount of trouble she went through to get her own people (the Blood Elves, anyway) into the Horde also seems to show she has intentions of staying.

Also, I highly doubt Sylvanas was behind the Wrathgate or had any knowledge of it. The only thing she really wants right now is vengeance on Arthas, and she wouldn't do anything to jeopardize that. And if she really knew about this, she would have been there herself to make the attempt on Arthas' life; she wouldn't leave it to a few apothecaries and a plague, she'd want to launch that arrow she'd been making for months just to pierce Arthas' helmet (this is a hypothetical situation; I don't think she has any special arrow for him, but I wouldn't be surprised, as she did have one in WC3).

We also have to remember that prior to WotLK releasing, Sylvanas had been making multiple very long trips to Northrend for a while. Which would easily make it plausible that during those trips, where Varimathras would be in charge, he would do what he needed to plan the betrayal, and then hide any materials or such that might cause suspicion when Sylvanas returns. I'm also inclined to believe that during this time and likely before, Sylvanas was so focused on preparing for Northrend that she wasn't as aware of what was happening in her home.

Well, that's my two cents anyway. I am interested to see how it all plays out with Sylvanas though.

Ok, I am having a serious problem. I took the armor piece to Thrall, he ported me to UC where I got the flag (now I realize that I came in the middle of the fight and should have waited) however at the time it told me I completed the quest in my quest log. I came back to Org to turn it in and could not. So then I tried dropping it and picking it back up from Thrall to no avail. I fly back to the original dragon and tried to restart it and could not. Now not only am I still phased in while in Org but I cannot even complete the "epic battle" all of you are talking about... I'm not only confused but disappointed.. any help is greatly appreciated!

Ok... I screwed up. I ported to the UC and the battle had already started. So I dumped the quest. Not I cant figure out how to pick it up again. I'm reading that Broll Bearmantle can give it to me again but I can't find him. I also went back to Thrall's throne room to report. The port is there but I can't use it. Does anyone know how I can get this quest again?

Be sure if you ever plan on getting lore master of eastern kingdoms to do all of varimaths's quests before this chain because he doesnt show up after you complete the battle for the undercity and you cant do the quests.

Yeah, I totally forgot to talk to thrall before going in. Made it almost all of the way to the throne room before I was like "There is no way that I'm gonna be able to solo the last boss". I came here to look it up, saw the stuff about Thrall and buffs and I instantly facepalmed.

Why would you wait that long? I generally start this as soon as I can - level 71. Some of the prereqs only require 70, but I'm there as soon as I can be there. On most characters I've ended up completing the quest line at 71-72. Some of the quests required teaming up with someone (as a level 71) but for the most part they are soloable - particularly in Heirloom (BoA) gear - and having flight for this quest line makes life much, much easier without detracting from the epic scope of the quest chain itself.

Of course, this pertains to people doing the quest on alts, but even on my first character, I managed to complete it by 72.

The rewards aren't fantastic but I'd take issue with saying that they are useless (for those who have said as much) to begin with, they're not the point, the point is the lore, the exp you get for the entire quest chain and rewards during the quests leading up to it -- and the pure fun of it.

But from a level 71/72 point standpoint? The legs aren't that bad at all. For a caster, there is a very good amount of haste, and other decent stats - the same is true for most classes, particularly at the lower levels. As for the trinket? It's a symbol that you did the event, your "Medallion of Heroism" - a great piece of lore that goes well with the quest chain.

Using it as genuine trinket is actually a good idea, especially for those who complete the quest chain at 71/72. The crit on the Medallion is 2.1% at level 71. That's a nice chunk of crit at that level. I haven't researched other trinkets available at level 71 that have 2% crit on them, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm betting there aren't that many of them. You give up a slot for a SP or AP trinket, but then whether or not it works for you depends on your overall gear. The small heal is just that, a small heal - at level 71 for a clothie, it can make a difference, clearly not at 74/75 and higher.

I haven't been able to delete the Medallion on my main - silly perhaps, but it was a real accomplishment to do it in regular gear when it was all fresh and new and amazing. It still is nearly as much fun on alts.

Be careful at the end of the event when the Alliance king turns up. If you attack him, you get pvp flagged. Since the event finishes very shortly thereafter and you get teleported to the Northrend zepellin tower just outside Orgrimmar, there is a risk of being caught up in level 80 cross-faction duels or worse if you return to the city.

Yes, my level 75 druid got ganked by a well-geared 80 spriest loitering around the entrance harassing the guards. He just dotted me up with instants and by the time I ran past the guards into safety from Line of Sight I didn't have time for any big heal casts. Ouch...

That was just the GREATEST quest line and ending battle ever. Yes, Thrall was wordy and slow but it was just the best ending quest line I have completed to date. I did the Orc long quest line in Nagrand but this one was awesome. Did not die or take any major damage to armor. Had a little over 3 gold in repairs afterward.

If anyone could screw up a quest it's me but I did not this time amazingly. When you arrive and the battle is in progress wait no matter the length of time for it to end and begin again. Thrall will show up with Sylvanas as he said before you port from his war room. When he arrives speak with him and tell him you are ready to begin the retaking of the Undercity. You will have to wait for another 5 min before he and Sylvanas head for the entrance of the Undercity. Let Thrall lead. Hit Mobs only after he does and enjoy the ride. One heck of a battle! Takes a little over 30 min to complete once your begin the run. Good stuff. Makes on wonder what is in for store for the Horde when Cataclysm arrives. Political intrigue and double crosses.

this may be an old question, but for the record, there is an NPC in the Undercity now who acts as the Varimathras NPC replacement, he both offers and completes any and all quests Varimathras used to :)

You have to TALK to Thrall to get the event started. -No question mark etc.

Even after having done the event a couple of times before my dumbace sat there waiting getting bored...waiting...decided to read the post here while I waited for the thing to start sometime hopefully today..and then...DOH! Talked to Thrall and the 5 min countdown started -Thanks to Tammin for the reminder. . .

I made sure to do this quest on both my level 80's when I had the chance to. My computer fried so my best friend loaned me his JUST so I could do this quest! One of THE most epic quest lines I've done so far in game! It was SO worth the massive chain lines and everything JUST to fight for one of our cities, and of course, to fight beside Lady Sylvanas herself! All hail Lady Sylvanas and her epicness! ^w^

Yep...what a sad way to remove it too. Just leave it after Wrathgate with nothing. Alexstrasza even whispers to you "Come to me..." and then nothing. Absolutely no thought went into taking this out of the game.

Sad to see one of the funnest quests ripped out and the quest rewards as well.

I'm very disappointed that this quest has been removed from the game... I had never done this horde-side and was looking forward to it, but oh well. I guess I can see why they removed it, since Thrall's no longer warchief, but then aren't the entire stories of Outland and Northrend set in the past anyway?

They've actually done similar things in Outland. The quest to meet the Mag'har no longer sends you to meet Thrall, for obvious reasons, and seems to end with the stage in which you report finding the mag'har outpost to nazgrel.

Just to give another brief example of an epic chain being cut short. A shame, but rather inevitable. Maybe if Thrall returns as warchief in the future, we might see this kind of thing come back.

Why was this removed! This was the BEST quest, no, it was THE quest. The only thing with meaning in the game and covered the greatest bit of lore of all time. I rejoined WoW on 4.0.6 when it was 2 days of 4.1.0, and I said to myself 'I liked that Wrathgate quest, maybe I should level a whole new account to be able to do it again, oh wait, my hunter alt.' So I venture off there and end up pulling a TICKET out my arse and ratted out Blizzard when they replied to the ticket. This game was removed, but with no thought. It could of been like this:
Dragon guy thingy: 'Do you want to know what happened? This land, torn apart...'
Then you do THIS quest again!

USE COMMON SENCE BLIZZARD BEFORE YOU PUT BACK IN PLAGUELANDS! EVERYONE HATES PLAGUELANDS AND BARRENS!

It's a real shame that they removed this as it really was a great quest and set the stage for alot of Cataclysm-lore. For any new players Cataclysm will feel like someone turned over two pages at once, but I suppose that it'd be hard to fix this now and Blizzard are nothing if not lazy (i'm still waiting for them to re-re-re-relese Onyxia).
What really annoyed me was that I had no idea this was removed until I'd levelled all the way to 75 and completed all the Dragonblight quests. I can't help but feel that when 4.03 came out Blizzard tried to hide a lot of their changes until after they were sure that people were gonna buy Cataclysm.

I quit WoW back in vanilla and finally came back a couple weeks ago. I was really excited to do this quest line as friends had told me about it, and now I come to find I never can...kind of a bummer.

If they took out this quest because it is chronologically nonsensical to incorporate into Cataclysm, I think it'd make a great flashback Caverns of Time Heroic.

Give newer players a chance to see that brief segment of epic lore, plus it would make a little more sense in Cataclysm as it's only a flashback.

I spent forever trying to get to the end of the quest chain so I could do this quest. I didn't know it wasn't in game any more. D; I even read all the quest text along the way so I knew the quest line. Now I am incredibly disappointed in Blizzard. I have lost all hope for Northrend now.

I'm saddened by the fact that I can barely remember the Alliance version of this, but even more saddened that I will never experience the Horde side of this. It bugs me something fierce..

I hope they decide to make it available again, in CoT if they must. We got to slaughter Stratholme with Arthas, why not kill Varimathras with Sylvanas and Thrall ?

Kinda feel sorry for those that never got to experience the quest at all, though. At least I have some vague memories.

I understand that back in the day it caused many issues and it was easier to remove it than keep it ingame

but with release of Mists of Pandaria, game introduced Scenarios and in Warlords were even small solo scenarios that were possible to do only once as part of the quest experience in specific locations.

So... would it be really so hard to reintroduce this series for both faction as they used to be as a scenario? That would not cause issues with Undercity phasing and anything
