In last week's PTR build, there were changes for the
Frost Mage's tier set bonus
! In this article, Preheat gives his thoughts and opinions on the recent changes.
Frost Mage Tier Set Tuning for Build 41359
(2-set) While Icy Veins is active Your spells have a 25% chance to call down a Comet Storm on your target enemy. This effect cannot occur more than once every 3020 sec.
Preheat
, our Frost Mage guide writer, has given their thoughts on the above changes!
In the latest pass of updates in 9.2 Frost Mages have had their Frost tier updated:
2p:
Tempestade Congelante
Your spells have a 25% chance to call down a
Chuva de Cometas
on your target enemy. This effect cannot occur more than once every 20 sec.
On paper, the two main takeaways on this update to the tier set are that the bonus is no longer tied to
Veias Gélidas
and also the internal cooldown is now 20 seconds which means roughly 3 procs per minute instead of 2. This is a fantastic change, but it's not all. The interaction between
Calafrio do Inverno
and
Chuva de Cometas
was also fixed so
Chuva de Cometas
is affected by
Calafrio do Inverno
while
not consuming it
.
This changes the ideal playstyle a bit:
If Comet Storm is talented, you will want to hold your castable
Chuva de Cometas
until
Calafrio do Inverno
is active
If there is one charge of
Calafrio do Inverno
remaining on the target and your 2p tier (
Tempestade Congelante
) is triggered, cast a
Seta de Gelo
if it would result in additional Comet Storm projectiles benefitting from Shatter.
This is still early on, but the
Mage theorycrafting community over at Altered Time
has worked out that doing both results 2.29% dps gain.
Dorovon
of BDGG has provided us with this screenshot.
The only outstanding issue with this bonus is that
Chuva de Cometas
will sometimes miss a moving target. This means the damage of
Chuva de Cometas
and the damage increase from
Tempestade Congelante
both miss. Since this triggers roughly every 20 seconds, you may gain less damage from this tier bonus on fights where the boss is frequently moved.
Aside for missing due to boss movement, this means all of the issues we discussed in the first batch of feedback have been resolved. Additionally, with
Chuva de Cometas
now working for this bonus and with it's new interaction with
Calafrio do Inverno
, there are gains to be had in playing around your
Calafrio do Inverno
applications which makes the rotation more engaging and interactive. This change also boosts
Chuva de Cometas
as a talent, giving us more variety. I couldn't be happier about how quickly the issues with this tier set were fixed.
In 9.2 Frost Mages get
Chuva de Cometas
centric bonuses:
2 p:
Tempestade Congelante
While Icy Veins is active your spells have a 25% chance to call down a Comet Storm on your target enemy. This effect cannot occur more than once every 30 sec.
4 p:
Tempestade Congelante
Enemies hit by Comet Storm take 2% increased damage from your Frost Spells, up to 10% for 8 sec.
Although this set bonus might seem good at a glance, the current implementation of
Chuva de Cometas
will cause issues for it, due to
Chuva de Cometas
consuming
Calafrio do Inverno
stacks on the target. Assuming that nothing is changed, this bonus will only account for roughly a 5% damage increase for the 2 and 4 sets combined. This is also assuming you have a superhuman reaction-time to seeing
Chuva de Cometas
to avoid munching (losing stacks of the debuff without getting their benefit)
Lança de Gelo
s while the
Calafrio do Inverno
debuff is active during a proc.
Assuming that this oversight is fixed and
Calafrio do Inverno
is no longer consumed by
Chuva de Cometas
, we can expect around an
8-9% gain
in single target.
This is assuming
Chuva de Cometas
still benefits from
Calafrio do Inverno
without consuming it.
Even so, this is still low but much closer to what I would expect from a tier bonus. In 5 target AoE this jumps up to around a
13% increase
, further reinforcing Frost's role as an AoE specialist. That being said, I really don't think that tying this bonus to
Veias Gélidas
uptime is a good idea since it further reinforces Frost's weaknesses with forced downtime in fights or other disruptions like having to stop damage. The effect is weak enough to stand on its own. This is a good time to point out that changing
Chuva de Cometas
to no longer munch
Calafrio do Inverno
would result in more talent variety in the 45 row, as it would overtake
Gelo Partido
in single target, even without this set bonus.
Overall, this set bonus is high risk, low reward. It is poorly tuned, disrupts normal gameplay due to it consuming
Calafrio do Inverno
procs, and gets much worse with poor
Veias Gélidas
uptime due to forced downtime in fights. Tying it to
Veias Gélidas
makes little sense and I hope it is reevaluated along with
Chuva de Cometas
Calafrio do Inverno
interactions.
