Introducing Wowhead News 2.0
Almost exactly a year ago we launched Wowhead News. Its intention was to make the blogging our content team did more visible and it certainly did exactly that.
However, a lot of people had problems with the layout. It wasn't styled like Wowhead, it wasn't practical in design, and its separate domain gave everyone a headache--especially the part where it would log people out frequently and make commenting difficult.
So a while ago, when we were talking about what features we'd like to do for our community, I threw out the idea that I'd eventually like to see Wowhead News redone in a style more becoming of Wowhead. As it turns out, so did the rest of the Wowhead team!
Today I'm proud to reveal the fruit of our labor:
Wowhead News 2.0
, a version that truly returns to its roots. We hope you like it--be sure to check out the sidebar as well for some awesome new features, including a featured guide box as well as the most popular addons from
WoW Interface
!
Please report any issues or suggestions right here in the comments and we'll stay on it for the remainder of this week and next.

New Site Feature: 3D Modelviewer Redone and Pandaren Added!
The ability to view models in 3D has always been a highly popular Wowhead feature. For some time now, we've had the ability to click on almost anything in the database and see its 3D model in Flash or Java. However, it's been overdue for some bug fixes and improvements over these past few months.
That's why I'm really happy to announce that we have
a brand new Flash 3D model viewer
on Wowhead as of today! Alayton has been hard at work for some time now on rewriting the viewer and we're launching it today.
Here are some of the new features:
Flash Modelviewer Instead of Java
Make sure you have updated to the latest version of Flash; if your version is outdated, it may not load properly!
Debugging and support is a lot easier this way as we only have to focus on one platform
More people use and prefer Flash so it made sense to use it over Java
Significantly faster load times
Improved particle effects and details
A new race option: Pandaren!
Pandaren are very much still in beta, so some emotes and armor may not work properly (helmets do not work on them

Transmogrification Guides, Part 7: Quest Armor (Updated for 5.4)
Our
Transmog database
contains quest sets from each expansion. Some of these items are only from one quest in the game--better to discover a set you like now, instead of after you've vendored that unique quest reward!
This guide covers all of the quest transmog sets in the game. They're organized by expansion and armor type with information on how to acquire them and basic colors.
Plus, you can mouseover each set to see what it looks like!

New Site Feature: Same Model As Tab
We've had a tab that's shown you similar models on Wowhead for quite a while, but let's face it, it's been inconsistent. While helmets and shoulders have always been steadfast as they could be automatically generated, many accessories have had no such tab or have had a tab with incorrect data. Belts in particular could be misleading, because many belts had the same textures but ended up looking nothing alike; the same goes for breastplates and boots.
Luckily for you guys, though, we've been working on it--for a long time, in fact.
Since August, we have manually been crunching out thousands of items and matching them up every week. This has been a tremendous effort on behalf of all the content team, especially Perculia, and I'm really happy to announce that it's finally done and live on Wowhead right now!
In short, every item on the database should have an accurate same model as tab. From
Peitoral da Intenção Cruel
to
Antigo Manto-feiticeiro dos Altaneiros
, we've gone through every item and matched them up
manually
. You may have to refresh your cache and give things time to settle to see all of them, as the data push on the site just went live, but the feature is now officially launched--and we wanted to give everyone the good news! To check it out, just go to

Wowhead Site Features in 2011
2011 was a busy year for us at Wowhead and we're looking at 2012 now as we pick and choose the projects we want to put out. The problem is there's a lot of things we want to do and time is always our most valuable resource, so we could use a little help.
That's where you come in--we really want to examine 2011's project load and see what our community thought of it, in particular which one they felt was the most successful and most desired feature. Maybe you really liked
the transmogrification sets
and would like more of those such database enhancements in the future; perhaps you were drawn to
site achievements
; or it's possible that you really like being able to pen a solid guide in
our guide section
. Either way, it's time to tell us!
So cast your vote on the poll and sound off in the comments on what features you liked the most on Wowhead this past year! If it's a tie, feel free to vote for more than one option! Also, if you want to read about these features further, they're covered on

Portuguese (Brazilian) Wowhead Now Live
Ever since Blizzard introduced a
Portuguese version of WoW for 4.3
, our users have been clamoring for a Portuguese version of Wowhead.
We're listened to your feedback over the past few weeks--and are pleased to announce the release of
Portuguese (Brazilian) Wowhead
, just in time for the holidays. Currently, the basic framework of the main site is translated and functional, with brackets indicating what data still requires translation. Simply access this version of Wowhead by going to the top-right corner of the page and selecting the option from the language drop-down menu.
We plan to be adding more translated material to the website in the upcoming few weeks--and if we require additional volunteers for localization work, we'll update our needs at our
Volunteer Page
.
Happy browsing, and curtam o site :)

Transmogrification at Wowhead: Guides and Features
Most everyone is running around Stormwind and Orgrimmar in their shiny transmogrified gear, but if you're still stumped on finding an outfit or want an even better one, we've got resources for you--from new features to extensive guides! (If you need a refresher on the specifics and restrictions of Transmogrification, check out the summary and blue post in our
4.3 Patch Day Guide
.)
A few weeks ago, we launched our first new Transmogrification feature:
Transmogrification sets
. You can read all about the feature
here
, but here's the highlights:
We compiled over 1,100 matching itemsets--sets of gear that match, even if Blizzard didn't explicitly group them together. From classic Tier sets to matching gear from Troll heroics, we've got it covered!
We labeled some sets as "Recolor" or "Look-alike." A look-alike set has the same pattern and silhouette as class-specific tier, but with either a different color scheme or no class restrictions.
We added image browsing in addition to list browsing. You can visually previe

New Site Feature: Transmogrification Sets
Transmogrification is one of the most hyped features in the upcoming 4.3 patch. And since we're the main World of Warcraft database, the pressure has been on us to create some tools for our users to find what they'll be wearing. As such, we've been working on some pretty awesome features as a team in addition to our usual workload since it was first announced this August.
With that in mind, I'm pleased to announce that we're launching phase one of our transmogrification features today. More are coming in the following weeks, but we think you'll like this one a lot so we decided to get it out the door and on Wowhead!
In short, this phase is all about
transmogrification sets
. A transmogrification set is a set of gear that matches, even if Blizzard doesn't always call it a set--and we've combined
over 1,100
of them for this feature in the past few months.
From alternate recolors of tier 10 to awesome low-level BoE sets to matching gear from troll heroics, the content team has added almost every unique set you could possibly want. If you're a warlock who wants to look like a priest or a paladin who feels more like a warrior, we've also got you covered; these are labeled as "look-al

Feature Spotlight: Wowhead Guides
We've recently started
a section featuring user-submitted guides
at Wowhead, building upon our popular series of weekend and holiday guides. With a section solely devoted to guides, we hope that the users--you--will use it to learn more about specific angles of WoW, as well as to create a new community of writers that provides constructive criticism and feedback. It's also a great way to get some extra publicity for your blog and additional hits by cross-posting some of your popular guide-themed posts to Wowhead.
Below, I'm going to highlight some of our great user-submitted guides and go over tips that help me with my weekly guides. I hope that this "guide to writing guides" inspires you to submit your own!

Site Update: Reputation System
We joked about it on April Fools', but reputation has come to Wowhead. Koper has worked hard to provide our users with a way to make the database better without much additional effort on the users part.
The new system works a lot like a World of Warcraft reputation grind--without the tabards! As you gain more reputation by performing desirable actions--mainly getting your comments upvoted and visiting the website--you will gain new
privileges
. These privileges let you help out Wowhead staff and users alike by giving you the ability to have your upvotes count for more and even
vote to delete
out of date comments. Where possible, we've made sure that reputation has been awarded retroactively.
The main inspiration behind this was purging our databases of inaccurate information from expansions past. We can't catch it all, but doing a blind purge may delete funny comments or aspects of Wowhead's "history." Still, that doesn't mean we want a comment detailing how the Molten Core version of Ragnaros has good drops and how T2 leggings are best-in-slot to remain #1 on the comment list forever. Sometimes you gotta move on, and in this case we didn't think it was too soon.

New Wowhead Feature: Guides
A lot of Wowhead's forum goers pen some pretty awesome guides--from what gear to choose for a relevant patch to 10-man strategies for Firelands, we've seen it all. Even our own volunteer Perculia has written some great guides. However, there's never been a good way to highlight these contributions and let more of our database see them.
Until now, anyway.
Recently we have released a new functionality to Wowhead: the ability to write and share guides. This is in its first phase of implementation which is its most basic. Wowhead users can now
write their own guides
, share them with Wowhead's community, and view others' guides as well. Eventually, those users who write guides will find themselves with more perks and there will be forum integration with guides, but we wanted to get this phase out to the public for testing and feedback. We've also imported the most viewed of Wowhead's guides to serve as an example and a testing platform for those who want to see what an ideal and complete guide looks like.
So go forth and educate the masses! There's even an achievement (or four) for those of you who get really into guide writing!

New Site Feature: 4.2 Encounter Journal Integration
As many of you guys may remember, way back at BlizzCon, Blizzard announced that they were working on a new
Encounter Journal
(then called "Dungeon Journal") game feature. This new feature would provide tons of valuable information in-game to players, including detailed dungeon information such as boss lists, drop tables, and ability details. Well, not only is the tool finally being added to World of Warcraft in the upcoming Patch 4.2, but we're happy to announce that we have been able to make all of the Encounter Journal details available on the site, as well!
Now dungeon pages on Wowhead (including zone pages and boss pages) will feature content directly from Blizzard's in-game Encounter Journal! Blizzard has been slowly implementing this content on the PTR, so not all dungeons feature Encounter Journal information at this time, but as soon new entries are available they'll start showing up on their respective dungeon pages.

Introducing Wowhead News
Over the years, the blog has evolved as our database has expanded--but there's only so much you can do with the same old layout and direction. So we've moved it over to some new digs and a new URL all to go along with our new goal: to provide content right as it breaks to both our community and the World of Warcraft community at large.

Behind the Scenes: Improved Datamining, More PTR Coverage & Consistency
We've done major tweaks to everything, but what we're most excited for is the change in direction we're heading for. Our datamining process has been streamlined to be quicker, we've expanded our PTR coverage, and we're changing the way our data is presented. We're not going to lie; in the past, the blog has been scattered in its focus. We've now refined our focus. Our guides will hit harder (like
our in-depth overview on 4.1 gearing up
does) and our content will be quicker as well as stronger.
In short: we'll be on the PTR so you don't have to and we'll break down those spell changes so you don't have to. With Wowhead News, our goal is to take the abstract and

Xfire Comes to Wowhead
Xfire
has always been a platform known for its superior streaming video content for all types of gamers. From intense StarCraft 2 matches to World of Warcraft raids, Xfire has live feeds that cover every niche of the vast gaming landscape. That's why we here at Wowhead have recently partnered with XFire to provide Wowhead users with the most popular live streams relating to all aspects of WoW from their site right in the comfort of ours.
From now on the community tab of Wowhead will have a new portal link:
Xfire live streams
. From this section of our site, you'll be able to see a frequently updated list of their most popular World of Warcraft streams as they unfold. From PvE to PvP content, picking on an individual stream of your choice will open it as a larger size allowing you to view it in higher resolutions without even having to leave Wowhead. Of course, if you click on the Xfire link, you can find the livechat and other Xfire features that allow you to interact with the person's stream you're watching.
Pretty awesome, right?

Site Update: Captcha Options, New Subforum, and Spoiler Tag
Our developers work hard, but usually it's all about the database or the blog--they're always finding new ways to speed up datamining or make the database's user experience smoother. The forums sometimes are a quiet third or fourth to the behemoths of the site. But that's not the case today. Thanks to some work behind the scenes and feedback from our community, we have a handful of new updates to make the Wowhead community's forums a better place!
Firstly, as you probably know, there's this thing called CAPTCHA and it keeps spam bots out. It also makes posting less than fun--it can be hard to read and sometimes refreshing is necessary. We've gotten several requests to have options for users or to at least enable the old system for users, so we have. You can use reCAPTCHA, the system the site currently users, or you can try out the Wowhead version. To change this, simply go to 'Settings' and select it from there under the 'CAPTCHA' header.
Secondly, there's a new forum in these parts:
the Computer Hardware forum
. A lot of threads crop up at inopportune moments in the wrong place. Sometimes they're of the "Can my PC run X" variety. We also frequently get discounts from partners to

Site Update: Maps Show Flight Paths
World of Warcraft is big. Huge, even. There are a lot of flight paths and it's hard to remember all of them. Don't worry, though, as we've been working on solving that problem: Wowhead is now tracking them all! Next time you're leveling and you're looking for flight paths, we've got you covered.
To use this new feature, simply go to a continent in our database, select 'Show on Map,' and choose your preferred faction. Markers will then show up for the area's flight paths as well as any zeppelin or boat path on the continent. It's a great way to see an overview of paths to zones you intend to tackle next; it's especially helpful now that there are so many new flight paths in World of Warcraft. Try it now--check out

Remember, we here at Wowhead are always looking for new features to bring to our site to improve our user experience. If you have any feedback on what you would like to see here,

PTR Shows New Daily Dungeon System + New Wowhead Feature: Event Calendar
There are a lot of in-game events nowadays. There are Call to Arms for battlegrounds some of us still haven't set foot in, the Darkmoon Faire is always coming and going, and then there are things like actual holidays and fishing tournaments. Keeping track of them can be confusing--or at least it
was
confusing. That all changes today as we've now added
an event calendar
to Wowhead that will show you what's going on in Azeroth right from the comfort of your own browser.
http://www.wowhead.com/events#calendar
Since it was an otherwise slow day, we also hopped on the PTR to confirm whether or not the daily dungeon had been changed--and it has! Players will now be able to do seven dungeons a week instead of one dungeon per day. Cue sighs of relief from everyone, I'm sure. I'd personally rather do seven dungeons in a row with a group of guildmates over the weekend than squeeze one in every day.

Site Updates: Anvil and Forge Tracking, Polls for Premium
Sometimes things are hard to find in World of Warcraft. It's a common fact that things like the location of certain
anvils
and
forges
have been the bane of WoW players existence for years. It was easy when Dalaran was our home, but Cataclysm just had to go and change that. Now they're scattered to the wind and if you're outside your faction's main capital city, all bets are off to where you might get your crafting done.
Luckily, the Wowhead staff implemented a quick update today that lets you find them in two different ways. Firstly, Wowhead now lists anvils and forges by their zone location when
you look them up
. Once you click on the anvil or forge and then the zone, a map will pop up with its location. Of course, we understand that looking up an object can be too much work. This is why you can also go to a zone instead and use the 'Show on Map' button to immediately have any existing anvil or forge be revealed on the zone map on its page. That's right, you don't even have to leave the page--try checking it out in either

Site Updates: New Profiler Features, Custom Stat Weights and Reforging!
The Wowhead team is always working behind the scenes on ways to make our site an even better resource for our users. This week has been a particularly productive one. We've made several big changes here--all thanks to our community's constant feedback! We get a lot of requests from you guys and we're always happy to listen. Over these past few months,
Profiler
has been brought up a lot. In particular, you've brought up adding a way to track raid progression.
Well, now you can. We're happy to announce that we recently added a raid progression tracker to Profiler. In addition to all the other awesome things it can already do, it can now tell you what dungeons are optimal for your level and gear. In just one glance, Profiler can tell you what ones you have completed and your current raid progression as well.
Of course, Profiler's raid utilities aren't the only thing we've enhanced. We also improved on Wowhead's ability to help you choose gear and see how your stats change with every choice you make. We've done this primarily through two other recent updates: the ability to reforge items and the ability to create cust
